Welcome to Wikimedia Incubator!
At the right there are some important links, and here are some tips and info:
- If you haven't created a user page yet, please create one with for example User language templates on it.
- You can select your interface language in your preferences.
- If you make articles, templates or categories, don't forget to add a prefix!
- If your knowledge of English is good, you can help with translating pages to other languages you know, so more people can understand it!

MediaWiki norska
[edit source]Hej! :) Jag har lagt till texterna som du placerade på diskussionssiderna, men jag kunde inte lägga till den här teksten, eftersom jag inte kan se den. Kan du berätta mig vad som ska stå där på norska? --OWTB (talk) 09:04, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
- @Ooswesthoesbes: Thanks for fixing those! For that one, just click edit in the talk page and copy what's there (I'm not sure it's necessary at all though, but it is in the list of messages). Is that what you did for the other ones? Because a couple of them have some code that won't really be visible if you just go by the text that is on the screen. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:55, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
- The rest I simply copied over from the editing field :) --OWTB (talk) 12:17, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
Hi
[edit source]@Jon Harald Søby: How many numbers of articles should be needed to approved full Wikipedia edition. A ꯷ 16:08, 26 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Awangba Mangang: Hi there, nice to meet you! The most important thing is not actually the number of articles – the most important one is that there are several contributors with sustained activity over time. For Meitei language it seems like there aren't that many active contributors besides you. There is also Afingba Mangang who has been very active, but the other users haven't had that much activity. You could try reaching out to them and others who could be interested to try to persuade them to contribute more, and then we can look into approving it. Kotava project
[edit source]Hello,
- If you have a little time, look at the Kotava project.
- I believe, objectively, that this is a quality project:
- - a continuous activity for a year;
- - more than 3700 articles already written, many of quality;
- - 10 active contributors each month;
- - already translated messages; etc.
- Regards, Axel xadolik (talk) 16:41, 26 September 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you for your message, Axel xadolik. That is indeed a very impressive activity. As far as I know, however, Kotava is blocked from creation because it is an artificial language, and a relatively recent one at that. On the other side, we (the language committee) haven't discussed Kotava specifically for more than 10 years, and have since approved the Lingua Franca Nova Wikipedia, a language which is even newer than Kotava, so I think it is time to revisit the issue. I will bring it up on our mailing list (but please note that I can make no promises as to whether or not it will be approved – especially for articificial languages the bar is high). Jon Harald Søby (talk) 20:36, 26 September 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you @Jon Harald Søby: for your reply. I know that constructed languages are badly perceived, but that's why I draw your attention and that of LangCom on the importance of the work already done, the quality of content and the active involvement of motivated contributors, really above the required criteria.
- Kotava exists for 40 years (created in 1978) and if it does not have the same notoriety as its competitors, it's because the people who are interested do not proselytize and communicate very little in English (not to be in contradiction with its goal of offering a neutral international language).
- I've already communicated with @StevenJ81 (who performs, almost alone, a huge job to make the Incubator live) and he knows the arguments, the reality and the quality of this WP:avk project.
- For myself, I am patient, there is no problem. But many of the active contributors (and others that I try to interest in participating) are more and more astonished by the great silence with which one seems to consider this work. Because, objectively, when we observe what is happening for the other constructed languages already accepted, this Kotava project is more important, more dynamic and more qualitative than at least 3 or 4 others, and it is at least of the same rigour and quantity than the LFN you mention.
- I understand that the criteria can be high, as long as they are clearly established and the rules are the same for everyone. Discussions and judgments must just be done on objective bases.
- Regards. Axel xadolik (talk) 21:30, 26 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Axel xadolik for information. JHS, I agree with Axel about the quality of the project. It's probably at least as deserving of consideration as anything else out there from a quality perspective. Up to you whether to take it to the mailing list now, but I was frankly hoping to clear some of the rest of the backlog first—both because a bunch of projects have been waiting for a while, and because I didn't want to bring up another contentious item quite so soon after the whole Bulgarian Wikinews event. But, as I say, up to you. StevenJ81 (talk) 21:35, 26 September 2019 (UTC)
- I sent an email about it just now, so we will see what the other committee members think. :-) Jon Harald Søby (talk) 21:48, 26 September 2019 (UTC)
- I sent you yesterday an email about the project? Have you well received it? Regards. Axel xadolik (talk) 10:26, 8 October 2019 (UTC)
- Hi @Jon Harald Søby: Today, there are 4356 articles in the Kotava project, which means the equivalent of the 187th rank of all official WP versions, ahead of languages like Hausa, Guarani, Lingua Franca Nova, Friulan, Lingala, Zulu, etc. For more than a year the activity is strong and regular. 4 specific portals have already been created (Painting, Literature, Animals, Anarchism). Also, all the "Most used core messages" have been translated.
- Is there an important point that has been neglected? Thank you. Axel xadolik (talk) 08:34, 21 October 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Axel xadolik, sorry about not prioritizing this. I am still very impressed by the amount of content, but there was a concern brought up on the LangCom mailing list about how many people would benefit from this Wikipedia, since the number of speakers is (understandably) quite low. Also, we need an external verification that the language is the right one, do you have any suggestions where I can look for that? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 08:42, 21 October 2019 (UTC)

- @Jon Harald Søby: Hello.
- The Kotava project should be validated. You have seen the vitality and quality and consistency for over one year. Today it has 4918 articles, making it largely the most dynamic of all WP projects developed in the Incubator.
- The open debate on September 26 showed no opposition from any LangCom member. Why wait more? Thank you. Also to StevenJ81, Amire80. Axel xadolik (talk) 11:44, 12 November 2019 (UTC)

Namespaces for Saraiki Wikipedia are given at Wp/skr/Template:namespaces.Sraiki (talk) 07:28, 20 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Sraiki: Thank you very much, I was just about to ask!
- Could you please give me the English translations for namespaces 100/101, 108/109, 118/119 and 710/711? I'm not sure what those are for.
- Also, for namespace 5 we will need two translations – one for "Wikipedia_talk" and one for "$1_talk". Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:55, 20 October 2019 (UTC)
- Dear,
- 100/101, Portal/Portal talk
- 108/109, Book/ Book talk
- 118/119, Draft/Draft talk
- 710/711. Timedtext/ Timedtext talk
- "Wikipedia_talk" ,,,, "وکیپیڈیا ڳالھ مہاڑ"
- "$1_talk" ,,,,,, "$1_ڳالھ مہاڑ"
Sraiki (talk) 13:20, 20 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Sraiki: Thanks! The TimedText namespace is only used in Commons, so that's not necessary Saraiki Wikipedia. The Book namespace is used on the English Wikipedia for the Collection extension, but most other Wikipedias only use either (a) subpages of a userpage or (b) subpage of a page "Wikipedia:Books". The Collection extension is also not very well-maintained, so it's not sure if it's going to be around for much longer. I would recommend not having that as a separate namespace in any case. As for Draft, that's used in English and some other big languages, but for a small and new Wikipedia I don't think it would be very useful. Better to just have "draft" articles as normal articles and perhaps mark them with a normal template. What do you think? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 20:23, 20 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Jon Harald Søby:، Dear… Thanks for clarification, all is ok. Sraiki (talk) 03:09, 21 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Sraiki: Great! I have submitted the namespaces here. I also submitted a linktrail for Saraiki. Linktrail is what makes it possible to write e.g.
abcdef
, which will work the same as writingabcdef
. I used the characters from Urdu + the extra characters mentioned in en:Saraiki alphabet#Arabic script. Let me know if anything needs changing. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 07:02, 21 October 2019 (UTC)

- @Sraiki: Sorry about the late reply. You can see the discussion on the public LangCom mailing list, there are some uncertainties about the similarity between Saraiki and Western Punjabi, and whether or not they could co-exist on the same wiki instead of creating a separate wiki for Saraiki. I'm not familiar enough with the linguistic situation myself to make any good arguments, I'm afraid. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 16:29, 12 November 2019 (UTC)

Mon namespaces
[edit source]Hi! I have just suggested the approval af the Mon Wikipedia to the language committee, so unless there are any objections (and I don't see why there should be), it will be approved in about one week. Before it is, however, we need to get the translation of the namespaces to be used in place.
I'm pasting the configuration for English here, and if you could kindly change it to the correct terms in Mon, I can put it in place in the code.
$namespaceNames = [

And the magic word "invoke" for Scribunto:

Here is more translation of namespaces and special pages. Ninja✮Strikers «☎» 02:48, 15 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Htawmonzel, Ninjastrikers: Thank you both so much, this is fantastic!
- Just a note about the special pages: I see that you have mostly followed the English conventions – for example, where the English says
'Statistics', 'Stats'
, you also have two translations in Burmese and Mon. You don't have to do that – even if the English has several terms, you can choose to only have one. Likewise, even where the English has one, you can have several. When there are several terms for one special page, the first one is the one that will be used when you visit the page, and the other ones will be like redirects. With that in mind, is there anything you want to change? (I also left a couple of comments in the spreadsheet where there are some English words in between Mon and Burmese words.) Jon Harald Søby (talk) 07:38, 15 October 2019 (UTC)- @Htawmonzel, Ninjastrikers: By the way, is there number conversion in Mon? Does Mon use the numbers from the Latin alphabet, or from the Burmese alphabet, or perhaps something else? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 06:54, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
- Mon language uses same as Burmese numeral. Ninja✮Strikers «☎» 11:46, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

Sakizaya Wikipedia
[edit source]Hi! Jon Harald Søby This is Vicky from Sakizaya Wikipedia. I had read the questions about namespace and logo from you. Because these words and concepts are really new in Sakizaya language. Sakizaya people need to take some time to discuss about it. They haven’t decided yet, but they might change the translation of "Wikipedia", "the free encyclopedia" and namespace. Is there a deadline for it? Thank you! Vickylin77amis (talk) 02:01, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Vickylin77amis: That's totally fine – I know it can be hard to come up with the right words for unfamiliar terminology. I even struggle with that for Norwegian, which is a very well-established digital language, so for minority languages it must be even more difficult to find the right words.
- I have submitted the namespaces in the code, so that we can go ahead with creating the Wikipedia, but changing anything afterwards is not a problem at all. So if you decide to change something just tell me, and I'll help make it happen. 😊 Jon Harald Søby (talk) 07:29, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

In Kotava, Wikipedia name is the same : Wikipedia. Axel xadolik (talk) 18:28, 12 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Axel xadolik: Thanks! What should the fallback language for Kotava be, by the way? I read that Kotava is mostly used in the francophone world, so would it make sense to put French as an extra fallback language in addition to English (which is always the default one)? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 19:36, 12 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Jon Harald Søby: Yes, I think it would be a good setting to put French as fallback language. The "official" languages order "defined" by Kotava Avaneda (the Kotava Linguistic Committee) is AVK and if not: FR, ES, RU, EN. It's theoretical, but... ;) Axel xadolik (talk) 20:34, 12 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Axel xadolik: Ok, cool.
- I went to add the namespaces now, and was surprised that they were already present (in hindsight I should've checked before asking). The ones that are present are a bit different though, take a look at them here. Are they OK, or should I change the ones that are different to the translations you provided above? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 21:12, 12 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Jon Harald Søby: I should have checked too. I think it's better to leave previous translations rather than mine, with the exception of:
- NS_MEDIA => 'Mamind' : 'Kanaca' is really better
- About NS_FILE and NS_FILE_TALK :
- If "file" is strictly an image file, then it's 'Ewava' and 'Ewavaprilara'. But if "file" is a file more generally, then it would be 'Iyeltak' and 'Iyeltakprilara'
- Question: Is it possible to change later items that would not the best? Axel xadolik (talk) 21:38, 12 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Axel xadolik: Yes, "file" is named "file" precisely because they can be more than images (it used to be named "image" years ago, then it was renamed). The way we do it when renaming namespaces is to add the old name as an alias, so that all links going to the old name will still work as they used to. In this case we would just add "kanaca" and "ewava" as aliases, and change the official translation to the ones you provided.
- Also, I'm assuming that if we keep the existing ones (mostly), namespace 829 should be "Sibaprilara" instead of "Prilara_gu_siba"? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 22:25, 12 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Jon Harald Søby: Ok for "iyeltak" as "file". And yes, the good term in such a case is "Sibaprilara". Many thanks. Axel xadolik (talk) 07:22, 13 November 2019 (UTC)
- Hello @Jon Harald Søby: Do you need other translated elements or do I need to check some others to switch the Kotava project into a stand-alone wiki? Regards.
- (added) Will prefixes like Template: or Category: be translated, or will they remain as they are? Axel xadolik (talk) 17:09, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Axel xadolik: The prefixes will be translated in the Wikipedia when we export content from here to the new wiki. As for approval, I believe MF-Warburg has sent you some questions about literature that he would like to see answered before we can move for final approval (if I have understood the mailing list thread correctly). Jon Harald Søby (talk) 21:44, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

Saraiki Vs. Western Punjabi
[edit source]- In 1881 , Glossary of the Multani Language Compared with Punjábi and Sindhi, was pulished. In this book more than 5000 words are given, which shows that Saraiki and Punjabi are different. see, https://books.google.com.pk/books/about/Glossary_of_the_Multani_Language_Compare.html?id=u10IAAAAQAAJ&redir_esc=y
- In wt/skr, there are more than 12000 pages. Most words are different from pnb.

szyWP appears case sensitive in template: ns
[edit source]Hi J. You recently created szyWP, and it appears to be exhibiting initial capitalisation behaviour that I would normally only see with wiktionaries. I created w:szy:Template:Interwiki redirect which usually would be usable as w:szy:Template:interwiki redirect, however, in this case it is not the case for this wikipedia. Are you able to say whether this is purposeful, or outside of expectations? Thanks. Billinghurst (talk) 03:41, 24 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Billinghurst: Yes, this is entirely intentional. In Sakizaya orthography, capital letters are apparently only used for proper nouns, not at the start of sentences. So unless something is a proper noun, it will start with a small letter. See Talk:Wp/szy#Case. If you click random article a few times in szywiki, you can easily observe this yourself. :-) Jon Harald Søby (talk) 14:16, 24 November 2019 (UTC)
- Good-o, just wished to check that it was purposeful. Billinghurst (talk) 11:38, 28 November 2019 (UTC)
Some problems in szywp
[edit source]Thank you for creating Sakizaya Wikipedia! I've just checked out its homepage, and saw it saying "There are currently 0 articles." After some tests, I found that some magic words such as NUMBEROFPAGES
, NUMBEROFARTICLES
, NUMBEROFFILES
and NUMBEROFEDITS
all return the value 0, which should not be. Can you help fix the problem? Thank you. --TongcyDai ฅ • ω • ฅ 12:56, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
- @TongcyDai: This is a known problem when a lot of content is imported at the same time – it takes some days (maybe up to 1 week?) for the statistics to catch up. So there's not much to besides wait for it to be updated by utself. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 13:03, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
- I got it, thank you so much! --TongcyDai ฅ • ω • ฅ 13:08, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
Sorry to bother you, but it just occurred to me that maybe some namespaces (especially Template and Module) don't have to be case-sensative for the first letter. As the site has just been created, I guess users may copy codes from other Wikipedias, and it may cause confusions if it's case-sensative – we have to be responsible for changing most of the first letters to lowercase, according to their orthography. However, those basic templates and modules which were imported from zhwp all begin with uppercase, like Module:String and Module:Arguments. What do you think? --TongcyDai ฅ • ω • ฅ 14:05, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
- @TongcyDai: I agree that that would be best for those two namespaces. However, I don't know if it's technically possible to do that – I haven't come across any configuration for it anywhere. But I will ask some developers who know more than me to see if it's possible. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 22:05, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
- I've found this, don't know if it is related to those settings. Hope these problems will be fixed soon! Thanks a lot! --TongcyDai ฅ • ω • ฅ 06:44, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
- @TongcyDai: Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you on this! It is indeed possible to turn off case sentisitivy for selected namespaces. Would you be able to initiate a discussion about that in the Sakizaya Wikipedia explaining what it means and which namespaces that should be done for (I'm thinking only the template and module namespaces)? If there is agreement in the community after ~1 week, we can go ahead and add the change. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 12:10, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

An little favor....
[edit source]Hello! I saw that you are an experienced user, who has helped many test wikis to reach completion and have their own websites (as a Langcom member you are). I also saw that you can create logos, as you did at the Sakizaya wikipedia. When i saw that, this passed from my mind: If you are willing, could you do a favor to me to create the Wikipedia logo for my test wiki (Ghotuo Wikipedia, Wp/aaa) Translation to Ghotuo:

Creation of modules !
[edit source]Hi Jon ! Can you explain me how to create modules because we have a lot of difficulties for creating them...?! PouLagwiyann (talk) 19:38, 8 January 2020 (UTC)
- @PouLagwiyann: Hi, and sorry for taking so long to reply. Modules can be quite complicated. Are there any specific modules you've seen in other languages that you think can be useful? If so I can try and help adapt them for gcrwiki. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 12:13, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
- Ok cool thanks ! I think we can use english or french modules. Just for started... PouLagwiyann (talk) 18:18, 23 February 2020 (UTC)
Hi Jon, I sent a new message to public list of Langcom on 23/03/2020 for the discussion on the approval of the Wp.Kotava project to finally restart. I don't understand why it was blocked by the moderator. The 10-15 active contributors on this project for more than a year don't understand why things are blocked. Thank you for bringing us some information on this.

lld Wikipedia
[edit source]Good evening, I apologize in advance for the bother! I wanted to ask if it was possible to actually make "lld - ladin" a Wikipedia. It is a small language spoken in the Italian and Swiss Alps, but if it is not made available, it is difficult for someone to find it to make changes to it. It already has 200 articles, more than many other Wikipedia already active. I wanted to ask if it was possible to make it a Wikipedia and if it still wasn't, what could be done. It's a language that deserves to be helped, not hindered. Thanks so much for the reply in advance. A cordial good evening. --Fierodelveneto (talk) 15:49, 28 April 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Fierodelveneto! As you may know, the most important criteria for approving a project is the number of active contributors over time, and the level of localization of the MediaWiki software. The number of active users looks good, with 4 or more contributors for several months now. The localization criterion still needs a bit of work, but I know there is ongoing translation in Translatewiki.net, so that's very good. If this continues I think we will be able to approve the project for its own Wikipedia in a couple of months! Jon Harald Søby (talk) 09:26, 29 April 2020 (UTC)
- Many thanks for the indication. However, I kindly ask for a great collaboration also from Incubator,so as to make "lldwiki" as operational as possible, effectively making it a Wiki. At the moment, being inside the incubator, it is very difficult to make many changes, we would already like to start making the modules for Wikidata, so as to have more data with greater ease, to modify our templates at best, but inside an incubator paradoxically, it is really very difficult, very complex to navigate, modify and even difficult to find new people ready to collaborate, as it does not appear directly in the search results! Thank you very much for your availability and I hope that this project will become effective as soon as possible. Good day! Fierodelveneto (talk) 09:54, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

Madurese Wikipedia & Batak Toba Wikipedia
[edit source]Hi, I have checked that Madurese Wikipedia & Batak Toba Wikipedia have been quite active in the last 5 months. Could you please check both? I'm interested to know when the Language Committee will consider their release. Thank you in advance. Wirjadisastra (talk) 13:36, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Wirjadisastra: Thanks for the pointers! The activity looks very good indeed, the main thing missing before we can approve is the translation of the interface messages. Madurese has 90 untranslated messages, while Batak Toba has 227 untranslated messages. Once those are done, we can surely approve them soon! Are you in contact with the contributors? If so, could you relay this information to them? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 14:17, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

pywikibot
[edit source]Hi @User:Jon Harald Søby, sorry to bother you with the following request. I would like to get approval for pywikbot to avoid the long sleeping times (I intend to use the scripts on Wiktionary Nias incubator only: Wt/nia). At the moment I'm replacing the old templates, which names are not always obvious for unexperienced contributors/editors. I have created new templates with better names. In addition I need to insert categories in the entries the new editors/contributors forgot to insert when they created new entries. If I'm at the wrong address, would you kindly point me to the right ones, please? Thanks. slaiatalk 12:25, 30 October 2020 (UTC)

About Script Converter of Wp/mnc
[edit source]I have copied the Module:Wp/mnc/Mnc-Latn-translit from en wiktionary and it works well for the transliteration, it only has few issues such as it also transliterates the prefix Wp/mnc into Manchu script, as well as the Capital letter cannot be transliterated. I would like to ask how can these issues be solved and how can apply this module into a real script converter. Thanks. 墜星璃月 (talk) 21:47, 16 June 2022 (UTC)
- @墜星璃月: I added a line that *should* remove prefixes now, but I don't know where to test it. Can you see if it works? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 14:48, 17 June 2022 (UTC)
- The prefixes are removed so pages cannot link to other pages now, is it a normal situation or...? And I have seen that some projects have an automatic converter that transliterates all texts by clicking one button only, may I ask is it also possible to launch such kind of converter to this project instead of adding the template each time? Thanks. 墜星璃月 (talk) 20:15, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
- @墜星璃月: Oh, I see – it was a bit more complicated than I thought at first, then. I will try and have a look at how it is done better later on, but I am on vacation right now, so I might be a bit slow.
- It should be possible to make a one-way converter like this in Javascript, the code in the module looks easy enough to replicate in Javascript. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 20:57, 24 June 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply. However, I have no knowledge of how to use the Javascript, so I may also need your help for making the converter. 墜星璃月 (talk) 06:28, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
- Additionally, I also copied the Module:Wp/mnc/Mnc-translit which converts manchu script back to Latin script but I don't know why it cannot work. Do you know the reason? And also, the converter converts the link which originally links to pages of Latin script into pages of Manchu script now. That means I need to move all the article title written in Latin script into Manchu script? but I think it may be time consuming... 墜星璃月 (talk) 00:56, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
- I have found that maybe we can adopt the way that Inuktitut wiki is doing, so maybe we can launch three converters: one default, one Manchu script and one Latin script. Also, I found that the converter in Inuktitut wiki only convert the texts without converting the original links that link to other pages, and this can solve the problem about this project. However, I don't know how to edit the Module so that it can work like that... 墜星璃月 (talk) 00:04, 1 August 2022 (UTC)
- @墜星璃月: Hi, I'm back from vacation now (but a lot of things to do, so I'm still a bit slow).
- The converter for the Inuktitut language is made in PHP and is part of the MediaWiki software, so it is not a module. However, I think I could be able to help make a converter for Manchu by adapting the PHP code, but it will take some time. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 09:05, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for your help! If there is any latest news, or if there is anything that I can help, please let me know. 墜星璃月 (talk) 02:13, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
- @墜星璃月: I'm making some progress: This is a screenshot of the page Wp/mnc/Nikan gisun copied to my local test wiki and automatically transcribed into Mongolian script using the rules from the two modules that were mentioned. I need to make some more changes, but will upload the changes so they can be tested publically soon!
- Once that happens I will need some help testing things to make sure they are working as they should. Also note that this converter would not solve issues with vertical writing, only converting the text itself – native vertical writing support in MediaWiki is a different (and much bigger) endeavour. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 12:02, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
- @墜星璃月: One question: How would you write "Latin script" and "Mongolian script" in Manchu (for use in the dropdown menu at the top of articles)? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 12:04, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
- @墜星璃月: Please take a look here: https://patchdemo.wmflabs.org/wikis/f7a2aa4c7e/wiki/Manju_gisen (test with the "mnc" tab at the top of the page to convert text, e.g. here) and let me know how it looks! Jon Harald Søby (talk) 14:04, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
- I have looked at the page, it works quite well! Thanks for the effort! But there are still few issues: First, the "," and "." should be transcribed into "᠈" and "᠉" respectively, but it seems does not work. Second, the "-i" supposed to be transcribed into " ᡳ" instead of "-ᡳ". Third, the letter "j" supposed to be transcribed into "ᠵ" instead of "ᡷ". The letter "ᡷ" only appears in "jy (ᡷᡳ)". Thanks! 墜星璃月 (talk) 09:19, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
- For the naming, you mean the names that replacing "mnc-Latn" and "mnc-Mong"? If it is, then I would say "mnc-Latn" goes for "Möllendorff" which is the romanised system used in this wiki project, or can use "Latin hergen" which means Latin script in general. For "mnc-Mong", I would prefer "ᠮᠠᠨᠵᡠ ᡥᡝᡵᡤᡝᠨ", which means Manchu script. But I would also like to ask other users about their opinion, if they agreed then we can use these names. Thanks! 墜星璃月 (talk) 09:28, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

CSS for Wp/cop
[edit source]Hello Jon! I was thinking about adding a background image to the headers of the Wp/cop infoboxes. I don't have access to create MediaWiki:Wp/cop/Common.css. I also don't think I should request an interface admin role, just for a onetime thing. Interwiki
[edit source]Thanks for the help: We will have to edit about 1,900 pages of Wp/sdc and almost 500 pages of Wp/sro, and it will take a long time. I put a link to the it.wiki page and from that page I can access wikidata. I read the code and repeat it in the page of Wp/sdc and, in case, also in that of Wp/sro. IP Block exemption
[edit source]Hello, Greetings, I am a Wikimedia projects editor, co-founder of Fante Wikimedians Community, and a recruiter and trainer for new editors. IP blocks on all wikis are affecting new community members who were recruited last month through to this month, and it's hindering contributions to the Fante Wikipedia Incubator (Their IP is not an open proxy, but the block seems to affect them). There is an ongoing contest, and most trusted active volunteers are affected by this.
I have requested a Global IP block exemptions here for participants on the outreach dashboard for the contest who don't have that User right already. Find the event dashboard here.
In the meantime I would like to request an exemption for User:Dansel17 here on the Incubator who is currently active in the contest and affected

JhsBot
Grazie Fausta Samaritani (talk) 02:03, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
- Buongiornio Fausta Samaritani!
- I hope it's alright that I reply in English, my Italian is pretty bad. :-)
- The background for these edits by JhsBot is this change to the Wikimedia Incubator extension. What the change does is that it automatically sorts all pages in all categories as if the prefix ("Wp/sdc/") wasn't part of the page name.
- I realized that a lot of projects have added sort keys, either by doing or (i.e. by using the first letter from the page name), or the same in . These are the only cases where the bot has removed the sort keys, because they are now unnecessary – the pages will sort correctly without any sort key.
- If any sort key was not completely identical to the title of the article (minus the prefix) or the first letter of the article (again, minus the prefix), the bot made no change at all. See for example Wp/sdc/Barack Obama or Wp/sdc/Frédéric Chopin, they are still sorted as "Obama, Barack" and "Chopin, Frédéric".
- If you find any error the bot has made, please give me an example, and I will find the reason and fix it everywhere.
Grazie --Fausta Samaritani (talk) 08:21, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
- P.S. "Obama, Barack" and "Chopin, Frédéric" era giusto.
- @Fausta Samaritani: Like I said, the bot only makes changes where the sort key was exactly the same as the page title or the first letter. So in other words, there would be no noticeable effect in the category view. If I restore the category sort keys, nothing will change at all in Category:Wp/sdc. If you were seeing a different order than [1009, 101, 1010], it was because of the way category sort keys work in the software. When you add a sort key, it doesn't just sort as that sortkey, but it also uses the page name. So on the page Wp/sdc/101 with the sortkey "101", the page is actually sorted as "101Wp/sdc/101" (the page name gets added to the sort key). That would have led 101 to appear after 1010 before, but not now. This is however an effect of the software change, and has nothing to do with how the bot works.
- If you want years to sort sequentially, so you would have to use "0001" for the year 1, and "0987" for the year "987" (and the same for dates: "01 Maggiu" for the page "1 Maggiu"). There is another way to fix this in the software that we can propose, but again, it has nothing to do with what the bot has done.
- The bot has not – and will not – change anything related to this in the template namespace, so there is nothing to revert there. If you need a list of all templates for Wp/sdc, you can use this page: Special:Prefixindex/Template:Wd/sdc/.
- I hope this makes sense. My point is that even if I revert the changes the bot made, the category view will remain the same – it will not solve your problem. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 08:51, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
- @Fausta Samaritani: To put it in another way: The way pages are sorted now (with or without any bot changes) is exactly the same as they would be sorted when sdc.wikipedia.org is created. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 08:58, 29 September 2022 (UTC)

[edit source]Hi Jon Harald Søby, I was just wondering what this edit from an IP address is all about. Is this relevant or necessary? Could you please help me with this?-Chandan Chiring Phukon Chat 12:41, 16 November 2022 (UTC)
- @Chiring chandan: It is simply vandalism. Weirdly specific vandalism, but vandalism nonetheless. I see it has already been reverted, so no need to do anything further (unless the IP keeps doing it, in which case we can block it). Jon Harald Søby (talk) 12:45, 16 November 2022 (UTC)

Hello
[edit source]hello, I'm from Karakalpakstan, I wanted to create a wikinews project in the Karakalpak language, for the benefit of the development of Wikipedia in the Karakalpak version, can you help? QRNKS (talk) 15:39, 28 December 2022 (UTC)
- @QRNKS: Hi! Personally, I am not a big fan of Wikinews – it turns out wikis are a poor medium for news distribution (the platform was not really made for that). Many of the languages that are otherwise successful in Wikimedia projects have failed Wikinews (English, German, my own native Norwegian, etc.). Some languages, however, have more active projects, so it is not impossible. But I would just like to encourage you to think well before you get started, to think about whether you would be able to gather a community of active users to maintain it – it might be a tough challenge.
- Either way, to get started, you should start by creating Wn/kaa, and create a simple main page (it can be improved later), and try to lay down some foundations. Since you're from Karakalpakstan, maybe you know Russian? The Russian Wikinews is much bigger and more successful than the English Wikinews, so it could be a good idea to look there rather than to English in order to get inspiration for what you might need – but don't feel pressured to copy everything they do. Especially at larger languages, the procedures for how things are done might be too convoluted and complicated for smaller languages to follow. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 15:47, 28 December 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you! I will try to collect active users, it is important for us to develop our language, in the end, after how it is possible to transfer from the test mode to the site, and who to contact, thanks for the answer. QRNKS (talk) 16:03, 28 December 2022 (UTC)
- @QRNKS: After a project has been active here on Incubator with several users for some months, and other criteria are met, the wiki will be approved. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 16:05, 28 December 2022 (UTC)
- thank you!! QRNKS (talk) 16:12, 28 December 2022 (UTC)

- You didn't reply, but in case you come back and see this: It seems like you have changed the script to exchange "XMLfile" with the name of your XML file. You shouldn't need to change anything in the script file itself. You should just run it with the command
python3 cleaner.py Wp/xyz Incubator+Plus-20230106132959.xml
(or possibly something slightly different on Windows, I haven't used Windows for many years myself). Exchange "Wp/xyz" with whatever the prefix of your specific project is. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 20:30, 7 January 2023 (UTC)

Request for approval of Gungbe Wikinews (Wn/guw)
[edit source]Hi Jon Harald Søby,
I think Wn/guw might be ready for approval. The project interests our community and we have moved a step further to add audio Wikinews (daily) to most of the news articles. With an average of 7 news articles per day and a very active readers and contributors base, we find this project succeeding exceedingly once it leaves the incubator. Kindly look into it and let me know your thoughts on it. Thanks.
- Gungbe Wikiquote project logo
In another request, is there any update on the project logo of Gungbe Wikiquote? Thank you for all you do.-- Samatics (talk) 08:06, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Samatics: I agree the activity in the Gungbe Wikinews is looking great. I am very impressed with what you and your community have done! I will propose its approval to the language committee shortly. In the meantime, it would be great if you would be able to get the MediaWiki core translation closer to 100 %; the 70 % you have is already great, but getting it even higher would be nice. It is not a blocker for the approval of the Gungbe Wikinews, however. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 12:00, 14 February 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for your words of encouragement! We will converge and start working on the MediaWiki core translations as suggested.-- Samatics (talk) 12:16, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

Kabardian Wiktionary Problems
[edit source]Dear Joh Harald! We are unable to continue our work on the Kabardian Wikipedia because we are constantly getting a message that the Metadata doesn`t correspond to the Dictionary Entry. Is this serious, or will it go away soon? Is there anything we can do to fix it? We can also not send messages from the Kabardian site since it always generates an error "Error contacting the Parsoid/RESTBase server (HTTP 404)" upon send. We thank you in advance for any assistance you can give!)) Rhdkabardian (talk) 10:21, 24 May 2023 (UTC) Rhdkabardian (talk) 10:27, 24 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Rhdkabardian: Sorry about that. It seems something (I'm not sure what) went wrong when enabling something called RESTBase. I have reopened the relevant task in Phabricator (T333272), you can follow it if you wish to get updates about it. If nothing happens within a day or two, I'll go bug the people who can fix it until they do fix it. :-) Jon Harald Søby (talk) 10:53, 25 May 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you. Everything seems to be working again. We have been able to update all verbs to make the conjugations collapsible (except for letters з, къ, п, т, ху, ш, щI, which are still in process). - We used our BOT to scan the dictionary and gather some statistics. We now have approximately 17850 headwords in 16680 dictionary articles. To complete our planned intial volume, we intend to add another 11270 Headwords. Then we will consider expanding the dictionary further. These statistics do not include the various appendices)) Rhdkabardian (talk) 11:48, 25 May 2023 (UTC)

- @Rhdkabardian: It would be good in general to publish the source code on a public code repository like GitHub or Wikimedia's GitLab server and link to that code from the bot's user page, so that others who might need similar functionality can find and see the code in a public place. That's what I'd recommend, at least. I use JhsBot on new wikis to add pages to Wikidata and remove the
INTERWIKI
template that is used here on the Incubator, but other than that it normally doesn't do anything on new wikis (unless someone specifically requests me to do something, but that hasn't happened in a very long time I think). Jon Harald Søby (talk) 12:06, 25 May 2023 (UTC)

- Jon Harald! Is there a way of deleting error records in the new Kabardian Wiktionary? In the incubator, we used the "delete|..." Template. This delete template no longer works. Is there a similare function for the Kabardian Wiktionary site, or can we appoint an administrator with deletion powers? Rhdkabardian (talk) 07:44, 1 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Rhdkabardian: Hi! I would recommend getting a local administrator (preferrably more than one). If you don't have one already, you should set up a village pump-like page. On the English Wiktionary, that page is wikt:en:Wiktionary:Beer parlour, on the Russian it's wikt:ru:Викисловарь:Форум (split into several parts, it seems, but splitting would be unnecessary for a new wiki like yours). When you have a page like that, you can start a discussion there about new administrators, and once a week has passed and there have been a few supporting comments from other users, you can request adminship on m:Steward requests/Permissions. I'd be happy to help with that step if you're unsure about what should be done there. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 08:31, 1 June 2023 (UTC)

Proverbs
[edit source]Hi @Jon Harald Søby! I would like to ask you a question, where is the best place for proverbs Wictionary or Wikiquote? -- ꠢꠣꠍꠘ ꠞꠣꠎꠣ (talk) 08:35, 1 June 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @ꠢꠣꠍꠘ ꠞꠣꠎꠣ! As far as I've seen, proverbs are normally put in Wikiquote, while idioms are put in Wiktionary. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 08:43, 1 June 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks @Jon Harald Søby. I thought so. Just double-checking and I will start this discussion with our community soon. We have 200+ Category:Wt/syl/ꠍꠤꠟ꠆ꠟꠈ (proverbs) in Sylheti Wiktionary, we might need to move them to Sylheti Wikiqoute ASAP, before it gets out of control. We have 4000 to 40,000 proverbs in Sylheti language. Thanks for your opinion, have a good weekend! -- ꠢꠣꠍꠘ ꠞꠣꠎꠣ (talk) 09:44, 1 June 2023 (UTC)

Last month, you suggested that Wp/osx was erroneously marked as "open" instead of "rejected", and updated its status accordingly. But as counted by this section title, there are still 44 articles and 9 redirects under this prefix, should they be migrated to 3rd wikifarms like Miraheze or Fandom, or just delete them? Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 01:02, 2 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi. Could you rollback the edits added by the last user? It is absolutely obvious that this user does not speak the Ingrian language from what they wrote (the absolutely most basic grammatical mistakes that distinguish the language from Finnish) and has not replied to my message asking them to stop editing the Ingrian wiki. I would do it myself, but undoing a couple dozen edits is quite a job. Thanks in advance. Thadh (talk) 23:39, 8 September 2023 (UTC)

Also, one of the two main former editors is pushing me to delete the rest as soon as possible (guilt, I guess?); Would you know anyone who could mass-delete entries not marked by the keep-template? Thanks in advance. Thadh (talk) 13:37, 24 November 2023 (UTC)- @Thadh: Thanks, I will go through and delete the rest of the pages soon! Jon Harald Søby (talk) 10:16, 29 November 2023 (UTC)

Help needed with Wp/isv
[edit source]Hello, Jon! I'm sorry to disturb you, but I have a few issues regarding Interslavic. As you probably know, Interslavic uses two alphabets: Latin and Cyrillic. It is of crucial importance for our project that articles can be read in both. However:
- First of all, the translation software works fine in the Incubator. Users can switch between alphabets by clicking on a tab next to "Article" and "Talk". There is only one problem: this tab is only visible in the Vector Legacy (2010) skin, which is problematic since Vector 2022 is default. Do you think it would be possible to make it visible there, too? See the Serbian edition for an example.
- Secondly, do you know if is there a way for a page to "know" which orthography is currently being used, so that the Latin text will write "Joe Biden" and the Cyrillic text "Джо Бајден"? If so, this could be handled by a template, like Joe Bidena. Here's a sample of what I have in mind.
- Thirdly, shouldn't the page Wp/isv under "Language" also give the option: "Set your interface language to isv" (or isv-latn/isv-cyrl)?
- And at last, Amire80 suggested that there might be something wrong with the configuration of the language itself. For example: on Portal:Isv of Translatewiki, the name of the language doesn't show up at all. And Babel boxes don't work properly either: isv-latn is accepted as a language, but isv isn't (you can see it on my user page). Also: compare https://codelookup.toolforge.org/isv and https://codelookup.toolforge.org/isv-latn. Could it be that isv-latn and isv-cyrl have been defined as two languages?
Would you be able and willing to lend a hand with this? Thanks! Best regards, IJzeren Jan (besěda) 21:21, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
- @IJzeren Jan: Hi, I forgot to reply here also. Did you figure these questions out elsewhere, or is there something that still needs clarification? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 14:27, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
gor.wikiquote release date
[edit source]Hello @Jon Harald Søby gor.wikiquote has been imported from Wq/gor to the new Wiki and we have started adding new articles. I just wanted to ask about the official release date of gor.wikiquote because we will announce it on social media. I don't see the date on this page --> https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wq/gor I have sent a message to @MF-Warburg but no reply. Thank you -- Mar_One Bicara 17:18, 2 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Marwan Mohamad: Sorry, I missed this message! I think October 1 should be regarded as the official release date. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 14:25, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
- Oooh no problem, we have published on social media that October 1st is the official release of Wikiquote Gorontalo. Thanks. Mar_One Bicara 11:21, 12 November 2024 (UTC)
Swahli?
[edit source]Hi Jon Harald Søby, I saw on your user-page that you speak Swahili as well as danish, german and English - what an unusual mix of languages!
I will try to remember this next time I come across someone whose native tongue is Swahili, but whose English is not as good. Cheers, Ottawahitech (talk) 14:20, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Ottawahitech: Hello! Yeah, I've basically studied whatever languages have been available to me, hehe. My Swahili is far from perfect though, but it's decent enough that I can make myself understood. But it's 10× easier if I have access to a dictionary. ;-) Jon Harald Søby (talk) 14:26, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
- Wow that's amazing, I wish I was as talented as you. I have to resort to google translate way too often.
BTW I clicked the Subscribe on this discussion-thread, but did not get notified (yet) that you had replied. I am glad I came by to check.I hope I am making sense? Ottawahitech (talk) 16:49, 11 November 2024 (UTC) update: Just got the notification. Ottawahitech (talk) 16:53, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
