Superfly is the main antagonist of the 2023 animated superhero feature film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, a reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film series.
He is a mutant crime lord who seeks vengeance on humanity for mistreating him and his family and killing his creator, Baxter Stockman by committing genocide on them so the mutants can thrive on Earth.
He was voiced by Ice Cube.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- He brutally killed a man out of rage for hunting him and his family down.
- After deeming all humans evil, he decided to take revenge on them by building an assimilator to mutate the world's population and subjugate humanity into serving him.
- Hired multiple criminals to steal advanced and highly secured technology stolen from tech companies around New York City to build his machine and would kill them if they ever found out who he was or failed him.
- Subtly threatens the turtles when they let it slip that they don't want to kill all humanity.
- Assaults the turtles by ramming them with a muscle car before stealing the assimilator from them and leaving them to be captured by the TCRI. Even the members of his gang felt bad over their betrayal.
- Despite having the opportunity to redeem himself like the other mutants when the turtles and Splinter get through to them, he rejects the offer and turns on his machine.
- Fights his former gang and the turtles when they try to turn off the assimilator.
- After becoming a whale-like Kaiju as a result of fusing within the assimilator and various animals in a nearby Zoo, he starts his goal of bringing genocide upon humanity by attacking New York City.
- It's worth mentioning the animals he mutated with seem to be in complete agony over their current state, yet he doesn't care.
- This also makes him indirectly responsible for Josefina Bishop becoming a villain, as it is revealed in her backstory in the Tales of the TMNT episode "Bishop Makes Her Move" that during his rampage across New York City, he destroys the roof of the Mechazoid factory that Bishop worked in and destroyed Mechazoid 00, which was the only reminder of her sister that she had left, and as a result, she developed a genocidal hatred for mutants and vowed to exterminate them all.
- When the turtles attempt to de-mutanize him, he nearly crushes them to death, visibly cracking their shells in the process. He also aggressively swatted Splinter away when he tried to save them and broke his ankle.
- Despite presenting himself as a well-intentioned extremist at first, believing that the only way mutants could roam freely was if humanity was wiped out and enslaved, this becomes subverted by the film's climax when he sees various humans helping the turtles and other mutants defeat him, yet doesn't care and remains hellbent on killing them all.
- Although he does care for his brethren, he arguably raised them to be the worst of themselves, something that was pointed out by Bebop and Rocksteady. Furthermore, he has no problem with attempting to kill them once they turn against him.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He has a pretty sympathetic backstory, as he was an ordinary fly whose creator, Baxter Stockman, was killed by Cynthia Utrom's men when he attempts to save him and his other creations from them.
- Years after his creator's death, he and the others attempt to blend in with human society but are rejected by them. His overall mistreatment at the hands of humanity is what caused him to become the misanthrope he is today.
- He has insecurities, as he initially wanted to be accepted by humanity like his family and the turtles. Additionally, he did make an honest attempt at socializing with them.
- Although he subverts the care he had for his gang, he still genuinely loves his creator and technical father, Baxter Stockman, as he fought off the TCRI in an attempt to save him and was heartbroken over his death.
- Part of the reason why he hates humanity is because Stockman was wrongfully (albeit unintentionally) executed by them.
- He is genuinely affable to those who are just like him and his gang as mutants, most notably when he met the turtles, as he went as far as to insist they were technically cousins since they were infected by Baxter Stockman's mutagen.
- It's only when he discovers that they don't share the same genocidal goals as him that he drops this.
- Despite being taken seriously for most of the film, he has some minor comedic moments that makes him insufficiently serious, such as when he tells Ray Fillet that he prefers listening to John Legend over his singing, boasting about his newly mutated body having things such as a whale tail, and the scene where he gets shot by the Anti-mutagen gun by Raph, making him act like he's going to de-mutate only for a single horse to come out.
Trivia[]
- In an early draft of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Superfly was going to be Baxter Stockman just like in the source material. However, it was ultimately decided to make those two separate characters for a change by director Jeff Rowe and the filmmakers. Had the original idea been kept, it's possible that his Inconsistently Heinous status could have been affected.
