Segata sacrifice

He died so we could play Dreamcast...

Well, this one will probably be my last proposal this year, I hope you'll appreciate it.

SEGA SATURN

What's the work?[]

SEGA advertisements are...well, whatever advertises SEGA products, be it their games, consoles, or merch. During Sega Saturn's lifespan, Segata Sanshiro was a prominent character in them.

Who is Segata-san?[]

Segata Sanshiro is a hermit martial artist who sometimes interacts with civilization to enlighten them with the knowledge of the miracle that Sega Saturn was. One I codent involved him beating up a bunch of Japanese kids for playing a decadent Western sport known as baseball I stead of a glorious Japanese gaming system. They learned their lesson. Segata was also, apparently, in a relationship with Sakura Shinguji from Sakura Wars, and fought some zombies.

Sadly, all legends meet their end. As Sega of Japan was about to release a new console, an evil man launched a missile at their headquarters. Segata Sanshiro bravely jumped in front of it, using his superhuman strength to strave the missile off its course and into space, continuing to hold it even as it exited the atmosphere. Eventually, the missile exploded, killing Segata, but letting Sega live on. The 2017 Sonic Mania ad, however, shows him returning from space, so perhaps he did survive.

Segata Sanshiro would return in 2020. His son, Sega Shiro, had a nightmare about fighting his father clad in black, who wants to be sure that his successor is worthy of becoming Sega's new protector, and them throwing him into Saturn (planet, not console) at his insistence. In the end, it's left ambiguous how much (if anything) of that dream was true.

Admirable standards[]

The reason I'm proposing him is his heroic sacrifice, which prevented the destruction of Sega HQ, packed with people at the time (at least nine for sure). No other character in Segata Sanshiro's ads (aside from game characters, but their endeavours are seemingly only happening in fiction, not "real world") comes close.

Corrupting factors[]

Now, the most obvious: the guy is a bloody MANIAC. In his early ads, he readily beat up anyone just for not playing Sega Saturn, even children, and while he did eventually stop doing so in later add, he never apologized or even showed remorse for these actions. In the Bomberman commercial, he even makes his fighting opponent explode, but expresses no remorse, even though there's no indication his opponent was going to kill him. The ways he deals with his targets are so cruel and unwarranted that I believe they are terrible enough to make him IA and nothing higher. Add to it how aggressively he advertises Sega's products overall, and he turns out to be a real dick on top of it. And if we assume Sega Shiro's dream did actually happen and Segata did coerce his son into sending him flying towards his death...

Verdict?[]

Easy yes.
