Donkey Kong III, or DK for short, is the titular main protagonist of the Donkey Kong franchise. He is the grandson of Cranky Kong, who was the original Donkey Kong and the titular main antagonist of the 1981 single-player platform arcade game of the same name and Mario vs. Donkey Kong series.
Since 2004, he is currently voiced by Takashi Nagasako and formerly by Grant Kirkhope.
His Good Ranking[]
Debated Validation[]
- An argument can be made that Donkey Kong is somewhat anti-heroic, since he fights for justice to earn the bananas that he wishes for. However, this may not detract him for his truly selfless acts, such as freeing innocents from the Kremlings and saving his island multiple times out of genuinely good intentions, even when bananas wasn’t a factor in those circumstances.
- Donkey Kong 64 seems to support this idea, due to being motivated to rescue his friends and even K. Lumsy after King K. Rool trapped them in cages, with nothing implying that bananas are all he cares about. Whether he is considered an anti-hero or not, is debatable.
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- He saved his island multiple times from evil threats, including his archenemy, King K. Rool and the Kremlings.
- He and Diddy Kong were able to restore all the bananas that the Kremlings had stolen.
- Despite having to be captured and having to watch Diddy and Dixie Kong fight Kaptain K. Rool, he managed to break free from his bondage and uppercut the Kremling captain through the roof and saved his friends.
- He and Diddy thanked Dixie for saving them from Baron K. Roolenstein who was using them as a power source for the robot known as KAOS.
- Even though K. Lumsy is a Kremling, he volunteered and promised that he would free him from his prison.
- Deactivates King K. Rool's Blast-O-Matic, preventing it from destroying Donkey Kong Island, saving hundreds (possibly thousands) of innocent animals that live there.
- He destroyed Tiki Tong's tower by punching the moon out of the orbit as well as destroying all the troublesome Tikis and freed the animals from their mind control. Should Diddy be the one to do so, he catches him when he was out cold and falling.
- He defeated the Snowmads that took over his island and miraculously restored it to its natural climate.
- He saved the Fruit Kingdoms from Ghastly/Cactus King and the other evil kings, seemingly rehabilitating Dread, Karate, Ninja, and Sumo Kongs.
- He defeated King K. Rool, who stole the Crystal Bananas from Xananab and tried using them to rule the universe.
- In Mario Super Sluggers, he saved Diddy when he was about to be run over by a giant barrel, teams up with Mario and the others once he sees their skills, celebrates their victory over Bowser, and is seemingly the only one who acknowledges him saving Mario from Wario and Waluigi's sneak attack.
- Depsite being foes with King K Rool and the Kremlings, he along with Diddy let them join the Dk Wilds team after they proved how good they were in baseball.
- He helps Mario and Sonic stop Eggman and Bowser and save the snow sprits.
- In Super Smash Bros Brawl, he sacrificed himself when he saved Diddy from an incoming beam from Bowser and willingly took the shot as he was turned into a trophy. Upon being restored, he and Diddy aid Captain Falcon, Olimar, Samus, and Pikachu in storming the Subspace Bomb Factory on the Isle of the Ancients. He also takes R.O.B., the leader of R.O.B.s, along as they all try to escape the island's destruction.
- When he is unplayable in the Mario Party games, he will often give a player coins or a star by chance when landing on his space. In some instances, he will chase away Bowser when the Koopa King tries to cause trouble for those landing on his space.
- In Mario Party DS, he inadvertently thwarts Bowser's attempt to further shrink the Mario Crew and breaks the Minimizer, restoring the party players to normal size.
- Even though he kidnapped Pauline a few times in Mario vs. Donkey Kong games, he never had any malicious intent, nor did he put her in danger or had her locked up in a cage like Bowser does when constantly kidnaps Peach; March of the Minis shows he left Pauline in a comfortable room filled with gifts and treats. Similarly, Minis March Again and Tipping Stars ultimately reveal him kidnapping Pauline was a ruse they collaborated on together. Regardless, he always shows remorse and/or makes up with Mario and Pauline.
- Unlike his grandfather in his younger years, he developed a good friendship and friendly rivalry with Mario (helped by how Mario chooses to not hold grudges) and is often on better terms with him.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- Even during his heroic roles, he is sometimes prone to being a bit lazy, childish, rude and arrogant at times.
- Most especially shown in Donkey Kong Jungle Beat and Donkey Kong Country Returns, he lets his berserker rage take control of him, beating up anyone who he believes might try to steal his bananas.
- Even if they are usually villains, it still makes him too wrathful to be PG or NPG.
- He occasionally has moments where he acts like a jerk or a temporary villain.
- In the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series, his childish rage incited him to steal the Mini-Mario toys, kidnap Pauline and tries to prevent Mario from saving them, though he later shows remorse after his battles with Mario and/or the Mini-Mario toys.
- Similarly, he acts aggressive towards others in Mario Super Sluggers, where he physically rams into Luigi (his animation has him charging at the pitcher if he gets beaned by the ball in this game and Mario Superstar Baseball, an action that none of the other characters do), and the Mario Strikers series, where he threatens to beat up his teammates and/or displays bad sportsmanship to the other team if the player fails to score a goal.
Trivia[]
- He was originally considered Near Pure Good. However, upon further discussion, it was decided that he is too lethal and his actions are arguably anti-heroic to some extent, so he is moved here to Inconsistently Admirable instead.
- Coincidentally, his status is the opposite of Samus's. He started off as NPG but then became IA when it was discussed that not all of his actions were heroic, while Samus started off as IA but then became NPG when it was discussed that she wasn't anti-heroic.
- On the other hand, his counterpart from the Super Mario Bros. Movie stays as Near Pure Good due to that counterpart subverting most of his egotistical behavior throughout the course of the film, although this might change in future films when his obsession over bananas is introduced.
- He is one of three Inconsistently Admirable heroes to come from a video game series by Rare (in his case, Donkey Kong Country) alongside Kazooie and Conker.
- He is the tenth character from the Super Smash Bros. franchise to be approved as Inconsistently Admirable and the third one overall to be headlined.
- Alongside Wario and Bowser, he is one of the three mainline characters to be Inconsistently Admirable. Coincidentally, the three of them are rivals to Mario. However unlike them, Donkey Kong’s rivalry with Mario is more friendly given his antagonistic moments with him are occasional.
- He alongside Wario and Bowser are the only heavyweights in the Mario Kart series to be Inconsistently Admirable.
- Donkey Kong became IA thanks to Donkey Kong 64 where his most admirable act is shown.
