It is called the Scarab. It was given to my dad when I was a kid. It's some kind of world destroying weapon.
~ Jenny Kord

Khaji-Da, also known as The Scarab, is the overarching protagonist of the DC Extended Universe 2023 movie Blue Beetle. It is an ancient relic of biotechnology which, after choosing Jaime Reyes, turns him into the superhero Blue Beetle.

"What are you doing?!""We're not killers, Jaime. Let him go.""What about Dad...? What about Rudy...!?""During the transfer, I unlocked his memories. Let me show you."

Personality[]

"Vamos a partirles la madre."
―Khaji-Da[src]

Initially Khaji-Da behaves like a normal Artificial Intelligence, largely ignoring Jaime's repeated pleads for it to stop in favor of installing and checking its own systems. Khaji-Da mostly was only concerned with keeping Jaime alive for the sake of self-preservation, initially it wrestled control of the Blue Beetle armor away from Jaime and repeatedly insisted in using lethal methods to eliminate threats to which Jaime would constantly have to argue against.

Over time as Khaji-Da and Jaime's relation becomes more symbiotic the two begin to understand each other. Khaji-Da learns to understand Jaime's desire to only use the Blue Beetle to protect his loved ones, while Jaime learned to trust and cooperate with Khaji-Da in combat. When Jaime viciously attacked OMAC with full intent to kill him, mainly as revenge for his family, Khaji-Da warned him he was losing control and then recommended him to disengage, soon becoming the one who intervened and reminded Jaime that he is not a killer, and then shares Ignacio's memories with Jaime so as to make him understand that Ignacio was just as much of a victim of Victoria Kord as he was.

Khaji-Da has a somewhat dry sense of humor, it frequently replies to Jaime's moments of panics with snarky remarks and likes to show off its capabilities. It also took to speaking in Spanish occasionally and picked up on Mexican-jargon from its time with the Reyes family.

Capabilities[]

"Whatever you can imagine, I can create."
―Khaji-Da to Jaime Reyes[src]
  • Artificial intelligence: Khaji Da possesses a high-level AI system, greater than most current human technology.
  • Symbiotic synaptic interface: As part of it’s symbiotic bond, the scarab's nervous system is bonded to Jaime's, letting the two share their thoughts and emotions. The scarab communicates with Jaime as a voice in his mind, and no-one else can hear it. When armored, it acts as a HUD display, allowing Jaime to scan his surroundings and assess situations.
  • Transformation: The scarab can create a blue suit of armor in response to Jaime's thoughts, or when it deems use of the armor necessary to protect its host, with the transformation usually burning off whatever Jaime is wearing. Once the scarab dispels the armor, it retracts back into Jaime's body.
    • Super strength: The armor enhances Jamie's strength by a large degree, allowing him to easily flip an adult and kick them into a wall with great force.
    • Super agility: The scarab has super reactive ability as shown when Jaime prevents OMAC from striking Jenny Kord and allows Jaime to dodge gunfire while sprinting.
    • Construct creation: The scarab has the ability to construct any kind of tool or weapon imagined by its' host, such as scythes, sledgehammers, swords, or blasters.
    • Flight: The armor can create a pair of translucent plasma wings, enabling Jaime to fly and hover. They can also double as shields, should the need arise.
      • Jet propulsion: When in flight, the armor can manifest a 'jet engine', enabling Jaime to fly at greater speed.
    • Energy blasts: The scarab can shape and manipulate the energy it stores for a variety of effects, including firing energy blasts.

Trivia[]

  • In the comics, Khaji Da, also known as Blue Beetle Scarab, is an alien technology and artificial intelligence created by the Reach, which turns its host in the superhero Blue Beetle.
  • In the opening credits of Blue Beetle, a green light is seen impacting Khaji-Da. Director Angel Manuel Soto confirmed this was a Green Lantern. "At the beginning of the title sequence, for those of you guys that follow the Blue Beetle comics, there's a green light that hits this character, and that's a Green Lantern," Soto explained.
