The Karathen is a major protagonist of the 2018 film, Aquaman. She is a gigantic, ancient sea creature who served as the guardian for the trident of Atlantis in the hidden sea for thousands of years and later assisted Aquaman with his quest to prevent the war between the surface world and the sea.
She is voiced by Julie Andrews, who also played Mary Poppins in the 1964 film of the same name, Queen Lillian in the Shrek movie franchise and Marlena Gru in the Despicable Me film franchise.

Background[]
For a long time, many Atlanteans believed Karathen to be the mythical guardian beast of the ocean who would one day rise from the depths to signal Atlantis' uprising from its watery exile. She is much more real than everyone assumed to be, residing deep within a pit behind a waterfall in the Hidden Sea.
As Arthur Curry aka. Aquaman discovered when he comes face to face with her in modern times, Karathen and Atlan were good friends despite the latter understandably wary of her might. She accompanied the former king of Atlantis in his self-imposed exile following the accident that saw his kingdom sinking into the ocean and honored hia wish to safeguard the Trident of Atlan until a worthy heir comes to claim it. Up until Aquaman, many false claimants of the Trident of Atlan came to face her only to perish at either her hands of their own get best of them.
Aquaman[]
When it is finally Aquaman's turn to claim the Trident, Karathen confronts him as with the others. Unamused from sensing his mixed heritage and initial attempts at first, she decides to give him a chance when Aquaman revealed to be able to communicate with her and therefore Atlan's descendant. Karathen then explains her actual history with Atlan and her decision to safeguard his late leader's Trident. Now that he has completed half of the initial trial, she allows him to proceed with the rest, warning that the outcome won't be pleasant if he fail to grasp Trident of Atlan.
After proving himself worthy of Atlan's legacy, they burst into battle together against Orm's fleet, backed by an army of all the ocean depths. As Aquaman is now Atlantis' monarch, the Karathen serves him.
Personality[]
Ferocious on the first glance, Karathen is actually old, sombre, solemn, and loyal soul with incredible amounts of integrity. She dutifully served Atlan during his time as the king of Atlantis, accompanying him during his self-imposed exile, and safeguard his Trident until his true heir's arrival as per his last will. While normally a taciturn being, Karathen can be roused to anger whenever a self-styled heroic showboat showed up to claim Trident of Atlan despite their apparent unworthiness, so much she initially assumed Aquaman to be another one when they first met. Despite her misgivings toward those with mixed heritage as much as Atlanteans in general, Karathen proved herself to be a better judge of character, willing to put aside such prejudice upon discovering Aquaman's profound sincerity, his depth of character, as well as him being the first since Atlan to ever understand and communicate with her, subsequently joining him when he turned out worthy for Trident of Atlan's powers.

- Unique Physiology: The Karathen was a being of immense power said to have no equal on Earth. She was capable of single-handedly fighting the entire Atlantean army, which was said to be the strongest military force on the planet. Additionally, the likes of Aquaman stood no chance of defeating her.
- Immortality: The Karathen had lived for eons, since at least the time of King Atlan himself in 3,000 BCE. Despite this, she had displayed no signs of withering at the time of Aquaman's arrival.
- Gigantic Strength: Due to her immense size, the Karathen possesses massive strength that surpasses all Atlanteans.
- Underwater Breathing: The Karathen possesses the ability to breathe underwater.

- While inspired by Kaijus from Pacific Rim franchise which apparent through their similarities appearance-wise, Karathen may very well adaptation of Karaqan, titanic Kraken-like leviathan intelligent enough to hold telepathic conversation with Aquaman, or resist his marine telepathy outright in comics.
