Biography[]
Background[]
Gabriel "Gabe" Jones was born on August 14th, 1918 in Macon, Georgia to unnamed parents, and would later attend Howard University where he studied French and German. During the height of the Second World War, Jones joined the Untied States Army and became a member of the 9nd Infantry unit.
Captain America: The First Avenger[]
By 1943, Jones was deployed in a unit with Bucky Barnes and Dum Dum Dugan, and they were captured by HYDRA, a terrorist organization under the command of Johann Schmidt. The group were placed into an Austrian facility with other American soldiers, and were forced to create weapons for HYDRA. Jones and Dugan were broken free from their cells by Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America, and Jones assisted Dugan in working an enemy tank since he spoke and understood German.
After escaping from the facility, Jones was recruited in the Howling Commandos alongside Bucky, Dugan, Jacques Dernier, James Montgomery Falsworth and Jim Morita, and helped his teammates fight against HYDRA forces. During one mission to capture HYDRA scientist Arnim Zola, Jones participated in moving up to the head of the train while Bucky and Captain America entered the train to fight off Zola's henchmen.
Jones succeeded in apprehending Zola, but later learned that Bucky "died" during the mission by falling off the train. Despite the loss of one of his teammates, he would participate in the attack on HYDRA's headquarters, where Captain America had himself be captured by the enemy to allow his allies infilitrated the fortress. During the attack, Jones spoke with Rogers one last time before the captain sacrificed himself to stop Red Skull's bombs by going into the ice.
Legacy[]
What happened to Jones after the end of World War II is unknown, but he is seen in photographs in the memorial of the Howling Commandos in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
