HELLSING: The Legends of Vampire Hunter was a one-shot manga written and illustrated by Kohta Hirano.
A one-shot that was the main basis of the Hellsing manga that started in Young King OURs rather than Kairaku-ten just a year later, featuring the prototypes of Alucard, Seras Victoria, and the Valentine Brothers.
Summary[]
The story takes place in what appears to be a warzone, where the Hellsing Organisation's troops have been defeated by vampires. Hellsing's master vampire, Alucard, arrives, searching for survivors. He presumes that Yuri Kate, a female soldier who had recently enlisted with Hellsing, had been captured alive since she is not among the corpses. Meanwhile, Yuri is being raped by a vampire named Hellman, while his brother looks on. Alucard enters the room and berates the vampires for their conduct, calls them thugs, and kills them. Since Yuri's blood has been sucked, she cannot be human again, but must continue to serve the Hellsing Organisation as a vampire.

Production[]
Wanting to make a story about a "daring action story," Hirano created "Hellsing," due to the main character being a descent of Abraham Van Helsing.[1][2] Later on, the one-shot was collected and published by Kairakuten within the October Issue in 1996.[3] Illustrating and writing the story did not take a while for Hirano, and that the fact that he was drawing hentai at the time afforded him the opportunity to have it published.[4] He also added in a character named "Alucard" and portrayed him as a "vampire who wore a trench coat up to his neck."[5]
After the one-shot was published, and given the critical reception of the one-shot along with the story being labeled as an "erotic" register manga, in which, was not his attention to do so; Hirano considered the manga as a whole a "failure" and decided to cancel it after just a short 17 pages of 1 chapter. Shortly thereafter being hired by Young King OURs and creating a manga titled "Hi-and-Low," Hirano looked back on Hellsing and thought about removing the "daring" side and focus more on the action, thus led the cancelation of Hi-and-Low and the start of the main Hellsing manga, in which, Volume 1 was published a year later by Shonen Gahosha.[6]
Notable Differences from Hellsing[]
- In Vampire Hunter, victims do not need to be virgins to become vampires; the determining factor is instead the amount of blood that was drained.
- Alucard's entire design was reworked by Hirano; including the removal of the bulletproof vest, the change from a trench coat to a long coat, and notably, Alucard now uses a pair of long-barreled pistols.
- Yuri Kate was replaced by a new character named Seras Victoria. In addition, there is a similar scene of Yuri Kate being carried by Alucard in Hellsing.
Prototype Characters Featured[]
- Alucard
- Seras Victoria (Private Yuri Kate)
- Jan Valentine (Hellman)
- Luke Valentine (Hellman's Brother)
