“ | Fletcher: You are upset. [Andrew nods yes] Fletcher: Say it. Andrew: I'm upset. Fletcher: Say it so the whole band can hear you. Andrew: [a little louder] I'm upset! Fletcher: Louder! Andrew: [loud] I'm upset! Fletcher: LOUDER! Andrew: [louder] I'M UPSET! Fletcher: You are a worthless, friendless, f*ggot-lipped little piece of shit whose mommy left daddy when she figured out he wasn't Eugene O'Neill, and who is now weeping and slobbering all over my drum set like a f*cking nine-year old girl! So for the final, FATHER-F*CKING time, SAY IT LOUDER! Andrew: [at the top of his lungs] I'M UPSET! Fletcher: [going back to compose the band] Start practicing harder, Nieman. |

Terence Fletcher is the main antagonist of the psychological drama film Whiplash. He is the abusive jazz music director at Shaffer Conservatory jazz band. Despite his distinguished reputation, Fletcher is actually an abrasive, vulgar, and ruthless instructor who is capable of issuing severe physical and psychological abuse to students for even the most minuscule mistake.
He was portrayed by J. K. Simmons.
What Makes Him A Hate Sink?[]
- Due to wishing to mold his students into respectable jazz musicians, he verbally, psychologically and even physically abuses his (most of the time teenage or young adult) students, causing them to become paranoid and strained, and it became so bad, one of his old students, Casey, committed suicide in despair, although Terence was unaware of this.
- While Terence cries when he learned of Casey’s suicide, he lied to the other students to clear himself of any responsibility, and when he mentions him, he only mentions how he was a good musician and nothing else, while also willing to psychologically hurt others, learning nothing from the situation.
- Normally using ableist, sexist and homophobic slurs during his rants. While he doesn’t use any racial slurs, it’s most likely out of not wanting to disrespect Jazz or risk getting fired.
- When Andrew Neiman comes into the band, Terence verbally abuses one of the insecure students for having an out of tune instrument, firing him from the band and when he leaves sobbing, he says that he didn’t have an out of tune, but fired him due to the student thinking he had one anyway, making it just as bad, and showing he’s not above kicking students for no reason.
- When Andrew starts playing the drums in ways that Terenece disliked, he threw a chair at him, and then proceeds to verbally assault and slaps Andrew while insulting his mother leaving him as a child, even if Andrew played an alright tempo.
- Demotes Tanner from lead drummer and gives the position to Andrew simply for giving Andrew his music sheet, which he misplaced.
- Abruptly promotes a lower level drummer Connolly, demoting Andrew for seemingly no reason other than to have Andrew determined enough to compete.
- His abuse causes Andrew to start distancing himself away from his family and recent girlfriend, breaking off things with her and straining him hard to drum well, making him bleed from his hands from playing so hard
- Enforced all the students to stay for 5 hours after class and verbally abuses Andrew, Tanner and Connolly into playing the drums on his own taste, which leads the five mentally exhausted and Andrew injured from bleeding from his hands.
- After Andrew gets injured from a car crash and attempts to still preform, Terence seemed shocked, however, continued to humiliate Andrew he then dismissed him on stage for the pain.
- After getting fired from Schafer, He has Andrew Neiman preform his new band at a new concert, however, as revenge for Andrew getting him fired, humiliates him by having a band play a different song, making Andrew mess up.
- Even after getting Andrew to be a perfect drummer, playing an incredible drum solo, in which Terence even smiles and nods, impressed, it’s clear that all of Terence’s abuse caused him to be emotionally, mentally and physically damaged from the abuse and humiliation over the months.
- While Terence shows somewhat of a well intended goal, wishing to bring Jazz back into its roots by pushing people into becoming the next best Jazz musician, his constant abuse and sadistic humiliation onto people caused more damage than any good, which heavily downplays any good elements or point Terence has.
- According to Word of God, Terence will forever believe he is in the right, and due to his countless abuse, Andrew would get an overdose at 30, in which Terence will insult and make fun of him during his funeral eulogy.
- Aside from getting fired from Shaffer Conservatory after the school found out he was responsible for Sean Casey's suicide due to his abuse towards him, he otherwise never gets punished for his crimes, making a Karma Houdini.
