Mrs. Eakins is the main antagonist of the Goosebumps 2000 book, Full Moon Fever. She is a vindictive witch who specializes in magical candy.
What makes her a Hate Sink?[]
Original story[]
- She is noted to be grouchy enough that the kids of the neighborhood fear her and have spread (true) rumors that she is a witch. It is also rumored that she cast a spell on a neighbor that made it so she couldn't stop blinking (though the truthfulness of this particular claim is left ambiguous). Maggie, who has never done anything to earn Mrs. Eakins' wrath, is fearful enough of her that she refuses to Trick or Treat at her house. This implies that she is an unpleasant person in general.
- She gives Alesha and Robbie cursed candy bars that transform them into horrible wolf monsters who are constantly hungry and prone to terrible bouts of outrage and extreme violence to the point that they endanger those around them and are at risk of eating their own family members. She does this as petty revenge against them because Robbie kicked a Soccer ball through her window weeks ago. She does this to both Robbie and Alisha, even though it was only the former who wronged her (though it's unclear if Mrs. Eakins was aware of Alisha's innocence). What makes this even pettier is that this was after she had already yelled at the children and refused to give Robbie his ball back weeks ago.
- She is actually dumb enough to put "Beast Bar" on the wrappers of the cursed candy bars that she gives Robbie and Alisha. Near the end of the story, Robbie notices this and realizes that it was because of the bars that they were turned into wolf monsters, which leads to him and Alisha attacking Mrs. Eakins home in revenge. Evidently, she never expected the kids to realize from the name of the cursed bars that it was because of them eating them that they were transformed, nor did she expect them to come after her for revenge. The only reason why the kids didn't figure this out right away is because of Robbie being a poor reader and stupidly misreading it as "Best Bar".
- When she finds Robbie and Alisha still in their wolf forms a full month after the night, she gave them the cursed candy bars wrecking her house, instead of begging them for mercy and offering to cure them, her reaction is to mock them. This not only shows how petty and vengeful she is and demonstrates that she has zero remorse for leaving them like this for a full month, but also makes her look inexcusably foolish, mocking the two obviously angry and vengeful wolf monsters right to their face. This leads to Alisha grabbing her by the throat and would have gotten her killed right there had it not been for Robbie stupidly mistaking a batch of candy bars reading "Curse Bar" as "Cure Bar", making him think that eating them would cure him and Alisha.
- She shows no gratitude toward Robbie for convincing Alisha to spare her.
- After Robbie and Alisha eat the Curse Bars, Mrs. Eakins places a curse on them that causes them to shrink, out of vengeance for them wrecking her house and Alisha grabbing her by the throat, despite all this having been completely justified on Robbie and Alisha's ends since this was in retribution for the horrible thing Mrs. Eakins did to them. This further shows how petty and vengeful she is and that she has absolutely no remorse for what she did to them.
- By the end of the story, Robbie and Alisha are still wolf monsters, and now have additionally been cursed to shrink. The story ends with them in an even worse condition than before, with no indication of just how small they will get. It is unknown if their family will be able to help them by forcing Mrs. Eakins to reverse her spells, as it is unknown if she even can reverse the spells, and considering the amount of Curse Bars they ate, reversing the shrinking curse may be impossible. For all the reader knows, Robbie and Alisha may have to spend the rest of their lives being cared for by their family as tiny shrunken wolf creatures, or even becoming so tiny they become microscopic. All this because Robbie kicked a Soccer ball through Mrs. Eakins window and he and Alisha rightfully wrecked her house and Alisha grabbed her by the throat as revenge for turning them into wolf monsters. Even after Robbie convinced Alisha to spare her.
- Overall, she is cruel, petty, vengeful, does horrible things to the protagonists one of whom did not deserve it at all, is inexcusably stupid and only escapes death by blind luck, is ungrateful, and may not even face any sort of comeuppance for her crimes depending on how much Robbie and Alisha shrink and if they can tell their family before they become too small to communicate with them.
Goosebumps Horrortown[]
- She feeds everyone in town her cursed candy, turning all the humans in Horror Town into monsters just to make the town scarier. Mrs. Maaargh expresses horror at the thought of the children of Horror Town having their lives ruined by being permanently turned into horrible monsters who will be discriminated against and forced into hiding by the general public who will hate and fear them. The candy also makes the already monstrous citizens of Horror Town violent and frenzied, attacking humans and other monsters and trying to steal their candy.
- She wins in the end, turning all the humans in Horror Town into monsters and causing all the citizens to become addicted to her candy. The last remaining humans end up turning themselves into monsters voluntarily, so they won't be eaten by the other monsters (though this turns out to have all been a story Curly the skeleton was telling).
Trivia[]
- She is one of the only Goosebumps Hate Sinks to be female, alongside Tara Webster.
