The Marquis de Gramont is the main antagonist of the 2023 neo-noir action film John Wick: Chapter 4.
He's a powerful and aristocratic crime lord appointed by the High Table after the untimely execution of the new Elder by the hands of John Wick. For this reason, he is committed to eliminating John Wick and anyone who dared to stand in his way, and used this opportunity to elevate himself the upper position in the Table while dishonoring their rules. Due to this, Gramont becomes John Wick and his allies' most dangerous and merciless adversary and the archenemy of Winston Scott for causing a destruction on the New York Continental and murdering Charon.
He's portrayed by Bill Skarsgård.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- Destroys the New York Continental hotel and kills Charon, Winston's loyal concierge, just to spite Winston as a form of cruel mercy.
- Takes hostage Caine's daughter and forces him to kill his friend John Wick.
- After learning that John Wick is at the Osaka Continental, he sends his men to cause a massacre. This shocks even the Harbinger of the High Table, to which the Marquis answer that the bloodbath wasn't a method, but his goal.
- Puts a knife on the bounty hunter's hand, Mr Nobody, and forces him to pull his hand out of the knife, just for sadism.
- He ordered German mob boss Killa Harkan to kill the Ruska Roma's leader, Pyotr, after John killed The Elder.
- When Winston proposes him to fight in a duel against John, the Marquis accepts on the only condition that, should John lose, Winston dies too.
- After John and the Marquis agree to a duel, he cowardly sends dozens of men against him to prevent him to reach the place in time. He also forces Caine to be his duelling and implicitly threatens his daughter's safety should he fail.
- Tries arrogantly to give the coup de grace to an injured John, causing his own death at the hands of John, who didn't fire his last bullet.
- He nearly got John Wick killed.
Trivia[]
- He is one of the few villains in the John Wick series who are Hate Sinks, such as Chidi and Iosef Tarasov.
- To cement his status as a Hate Sink, the screenwriters intended the Marquis to be extremely irredeemable and despised, by killing off Charon, the series' most beloved character with execution. After the passing of Lance Reddick, the real life actor of Charon days before the film's release, both deaths simultaneously impacted and resonated with the cast members, the production team, and the entire audience.
- Even to this, the Marquis had the same level of hate as Iosef Tarasov, who set the series in motion by murdering John Wick's pet puppy Daisy and placing the dog's corpse in front of the unconscious when he wakes up.
