Lonnie Byers is a recurring antagonist of the first season of the Netflix series Stranger Things.
He is the cruel and abusive father of Jonathan and Will Byers, as well as the Joyce Byers's ex-husband.
He was portrayed by Ross Partridge.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He is petty and obnoxious, being abusive towards his family, having reportedly forced Jonathan to kill a rabbit and being confirmed to insult Will through homophobic slurs and call Joyce a "bad mother" and "a mess". He also made no effort to keep in touch with his family after divorcing Joyce and moving. He probably doesn't love his girlfriend Cynthia either, considering how he treated Joyce in the past and never changed his ways.
- It is implied that he physically abused Jonathan, as when he pushed him against the wall and the latter pushed him off, Lonnie remarked that "he's gotten stronger".
- He doesn't have a single clue about what college Jonathan wanted to attend, even though the latter had been talking about it since his childhood.
- He is an opportunist who manipulates good people for money, which is showcased after learning of Will's "death" from the fake body Brenner and his men put in the lake, at which point Lonnie came to Hawkins just to sue the quarry that owns the lake where Will was supposed to have drowned, during which time he behaves as if he lives in Joyce's house again, such as boarding up the wall and removing the Christmas lights, inadvertently ruining Joyce's chances of finding Will (though he couldn't possibly have known). Once Joyce discovers his true intentions, Lonnie shows no remorse for his actions and even blames Joyce about it. Before Joyce threw Lonnie out of her house (because he is only there to get money from Will's death), he calls her a "bad mother" and tries to make her think she needs him, when it's clear the real bad parent is him, and as Joyce states, he wasn't needed for a long time.
- He's basically a Karma Houdini, never facing punishment for his actions.
