This article is about a improvable weapon skill. For the actual weapon archetype in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, see Gauntlets. For the third Super Smash Bros. title, see Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Brawling (格闘, Kakutō), often shortened to "Brawl", is a weapon skill stat introduced in Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

In Fire Emblem Engage, it goes by the name Martial Arts (体術, Taijutsu), often shortened to "Arts".

Brawling involves fighting enemies using only Gauntlets or one's own fists. The prerequisites for using Brawl weapons or Unarmed Combat is dependent on the class abilities of classes such as Brawler, Grappler, or War Monk/War Cleric, or as a Skill Ability earned from mastering the Brawler class.

Overview[]

Three Houses[]

Brawl shares many similarities with Strike from Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn as the weapon type relies on general unarmed combat, mainly involving punches. However, unlike Strike, characters trained in Brawling can enhance their damage through assorted gauntlet and knuckle weapons.

Gauntlets tend to be low might, low weight weapons, with their hit rate equal to that of swords. They, unlike any previous weapon types, have an innate brave effect, meaning that they strike twice whenever their wielder attacks when they initiate combat. If the wielder could attack twice normally, they would thus be able to attack four times. These traits allow gauntlet users to deal a high amount of burst damage to low-defense enemies, melting such targets as mages and archers with ease. Because of their low weight, even users with low strength do not need to worry about being penalized for using them. Furthermore, because of this, users can use the excess strength to equip items such as shields without suffering as well.

On the other hand, their low might means that their user must rely almost solely on their strength stat to deal damage, and high-defense targets such as Generals tend to shrug off gauntlet attacks despite their ability to attack four times per combat initiation (the exception to this being Aura Knuckles, the magical equivalent of gauntlets). Gauntlets tend to lack the ability to inflict bonus damage as well, the few exceptions being dragons with the Dragon Claws and the Three Hopes-exclusive Wolf Fangs for cavalry units.

Gauntlets cannot be used by Cavalry or Flying Units unless they have Dismounted first, due to the need of keeping at least one hand free to have a hold of their steed's saddles. Additionally, it can also not be used by strictly magic-proficient classes for an as-of-yet unexplained reason.

Engage[]

In Engage, Arts users do not equip gauntlets, but instead use Arts Scrolls. The weapon skill is usable by classes such as Martial Monk, Martial Master, High Priest, and Dancer, as well Divine Dragon, the personal advanced class of Alear.

Arts have weapon advantage over tomes, daggers, and bows, allowing the attacker to inflict Break on enemies equipped with such weapons. As in Three Houses, most Arts attacks have an inherent Brave effect, allowing the unit to attack with a minimum of two strikes per combat. When using Arts, damage is calculated by using the average of the character's Strength and Magic stats added to the weapon's Might, though this does still run into the issue of Arts attacks being walled out by more tanky enemy units.
