After a long night, Cloud and company awake in the morning to the sleepy, bucolic town of Kalm. Aware that a long journey lies ahead of them, they decide to take advantage of this quiet moment to prepare for what awaits.

Chapter 2: A New Journey Begins is the second chapter in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, taking place in Kalm and the Grasslands.
Story[]
Cloud Strife wakes up at the inn in Kalm and learns his friends have already departed and are exploring the town. He decides to follow suit and receives a starter Queen's Blood deck, a popular card game in all the world. Cloud checks out the town and meets his friends. Aerith Gainsborough invites him to the local historical clock tower. They head top the top and gaze toward Midgar, whose gates have been sealed and are being closely monitored by Shinra Electric Power Company after their escape.
Shinra Public Security Forces swarm into town looking for them, but the proprietor of Kalm's inn is a former SOLDIER member with a grudge against Shinra who is affiliated with Avalanche and helps them escape via an underground passage.
Cloud, Aerith, Barret Wallace, Tifa Lockhart, and Red XIII make their way to the grasslands where Aerith marvels at the lush greenery, but Red XIII retorts that the ecosystem is under great strain due to Shinra's mako harvesting despite what it might look. They meet Chloe and Billy at the chocobo farm, who help them catch a chocobo called Piko that becomes Cloud and his friends' mount, whom Cloud can practice-race around the farm, as Billy wants to take the steed to Gold Saucer to partake in the races there one day. Having access to chocobos would let Cloud and his friends cross the marshes where the dangerous Midgardsormr is said to lurk, a colossal snake whom the party hope to outrun on chocoboback. They are determined to follow robed men who chant endlessly about "Reunion" in the hopes of finding Sephiroth and stopping his plans.
Before heading to the marshes, Cloud and party have the option of helping Chloe find flowers for a flower crown and track down Beck's Badasses for a protorelic that Chadley wants to study. Upon finally cornering the thieves and buying the protorelic off them so they can start an honest business, Cloud experiences a strange vision of a samurai in a foreign land. Shinra leaves Kalm after a while, letting Cloud and others sneak back in and learn more of the Kalm inn proprietor's past; he has been feeling under the weather lately and behaves strangely, attributing it to the medical procedures he had to go through while in SOLDIER. The party helps restart the windmills on grasslands by providing a missing part. The mayor of Kalm needs help with the local mako generator and the party also have a chance of helping him out.
Cloud, Aerith, Barret, Tifa, and Red XIII cross the marshes on chocoboback, following the trail of a robed man wandering the marshes alone whom Cloud briefly hallucinates as Sephiroth. They get accosted by Midgardsormr posing as an island, spooking their chocobos into fleeing. They initially defeat the snake but it reanimates and pulls Cloud underwater. He is saved by Sephiroth who impales the snake into a tree, making crossing the marshes safe again. The party spots numerous robed men heading into the mythril mines and decide to follow them.
