New Super Mario Bros. Wonder Switch is an upcoming 2D Platforming Game for the Nintendo Switch, it is the fifth major entry (excluding re-releases) in the New Super Mario Bros. series.
Plot
The game opens at night in the Mushroom Kingdom, many of the inhabitants of the Kingdom coming out to watch a meteor shower. Mario, Luigi, Peach & Daisy as well as many Toads and even other creatures can be seen watching the meteor shower. A distinct, bright flash of light suddenly illuminates the sky as a large purple meteor is seen shooting throug the sky, seemingly disappearing. As the night passes the kingdom goes to sleep as over in Bowser's Kingdom he can be seen watching the distinct meteor as well, heading to the crash site of the meteor finding it to be a strange star-shaped being, the creature still weak from the crash landing shakes and stardust falls off its body causing a nearby flower to suddenly transform into a large carnivorous plant, the plant nearly eats the star creature however Bowser protects the extraterrestrial creature using his fiery breath to burn away the plant.
The starry creature seems to thank Bowser and this gives Bowser an idea. The following day Mario and co. awaken to find letters from neighbouring Kingdoms pleading for help as Bowser's armada has invaded taking control of their lands. Realizing the peril Bowser may put the Mushroom Kingdom in, the quartet head out to help the other Kingdoms and stop Bowser's conquest. After shortly arriving in the first Kingdom, Mario and co. witness something rather unusual as Bowser is seen terrorizing the Kingdom and throws out strange glowing power-ups, two land near Mario and co. a Fire Flower and a Tanooki Leaf, the two begin to rattle and seem to be pulled together, fusing into a new power-up.
Gameplay
The gameplay of New Super Mario Bros. Wonder Switch is largely the same to previous New Super Mario Bros. games, the player/s are able to control Mario, Luigi, Peach and Daisy and must platform through a number of levels, dealing with obstacles and enemies along the way to get through each world. Each character has slightly different controls to one another although players can set a character to default if they prefer.
A major change in the Gameplay department however is the Wonder Mix System, which allows Power-Ups to be combined when collecting a power-up while already possessing one. The system also works with the previous Power-Up storage system so if the player has a mixed power-up already then any power-up they gather will be stored in the inventory and can be mixed with other inventory power-ups to create on demand Wonder Mix Power-Ups.
As with other Mario games, each level also has a number of collectibles including Star Coins which each level contains between two to five of, Star Coins are necessary for unlocking bonus levels, not only in the ninth world but also in the main worlds themselves. Star Coins are typically given for exploring the levels more thoroughly or by completing a tough platforming section. The overworlds also can be explore similar to Super Mario 3D World and allow the player to find secrets including coins, Power-Ups, secret levels and special enemy encounters.

A happy go-lucky mechanical enemy, their playful nature often results in them getting into fights with others due to their reckless behaviour. Gearos will float around and once they detect Mario and co. will home in on the characters attempting to throw their gear arms which can travel a short distance, jumping on the gears destroys them and if a Gearo loses both arms it will run away in fear.
Dribolt
These small robotic enemies will bounce around a level keeping guard and an eye out for Mario and co. |
Stegolar
This small creature wanders around usually stopping to eat at grasses, their sharp back means jumping on them is a bad idea. Whenever they're exposed to intense rays of sunlight they get a massive burst of energy and can charge at high speeds as long as there is sunlight.

Drill Flower
The Drill Flower gives the player the ability to perform a charge attack from stand still to defeat enemies head on, being a more melee-orientated power-up than others. The power-up can also be used while ground-pounding to burrow underground to hide from enemies and can allow Mario and co. to burrow through the ground to secret areas although not all surfaces can be dug through.
Dreamer Moon
The Dreamer Moon lets the user access the dreamscape, summoning clouds which engulf enemies holding them in the dreamscape before being summoned back again, used as projectiles, some enemies have unique effects when they're dreamscaped and can be turned into other power-ups.
Returning Power-Ups
Fire Flower
The Fire Flower is a classic power-up which has appeared in almost every Mario game to date. The Fire Flower gives Mario and co. the power to shoot fast moving fireballs which can bounce multiple times as they travel across the screen.
Tanooki Leaf
The Tanooki Leaf (or Super Leaf) is a power-up which grants the player will partial flight as well as a tail attack. Sprinting charges up the P-Meter allowing the user to take flight and pressing the jump button while in the air will help maintain flight.
Ice Flower
The Ice Flower is a relative of the Fire Flower which when acquired gives Mario and co. the power to control Ice. In this form the player is able to shoot freezing snowballs which only bounce once although have a longer arc than the Fire Flower, if they hit an enemy they'll freeze them solid and can cancel out incoming fireballs.
Blue Shell
The Blue Shell is a power-up that appears within several levels in the game, acquiring it gives the player a defensive upgrade allowing Mario and co. to retreat within the shell for protection as well as spin while in the shell, allowing them to attack enemies while doing so and being able to hit blocks from the side.
Boomerang Flower
The Boomerang Flower is another variant of the Fire Flower although more distantly so, in this form Mario and co. are able to throw Boomerangs, which have unique properties albeit with a more limited range. The player can throw Boomerangs through thin walls and it can pick up items from afar, in addition it can hit enemies multiple times in a single throw.
Wonder Mix Power-Ups
Elemental Variants
When combining the Spotlight Mushroom, Fire Flower, Tanooki Leaf or Ice Flower with the Drill Flower, Dreamer Moon, Blue Shell or Boomerang Flower, the resulting mix is an elemental variant of the latter. These elemental variants are comparable to Yoshi from Super Mario World gaining different abilities when holding different Koopa Shells.
Subcon
Subcon lets the player access the Subcon, this creates a temporary inversion of the environment, causing strange effects, the full potential of the ability is only able to be used by jumping on multiple enemies to build Subcon charges which rotate around the player. No charges prevents the player from doing anything, one charge allows them to fire a projectile which can take an enemy to the Subcon, two charges allows the player to induce the weirdness effect on an enemy and three charges allows the player to temporarily induce weirdness to all enemies on screen for a few seconds.
Paladin
Paladin gives the player added defence, although restricts Mario and co. to strictly melee attacks. Attacks include a standing strike, running stab, swinging jump and shockwave-generating ground pound which use comical weapons such as a giant wooden ladle, swordfish, palm tree, etc. The player can also set-up a shield that protects the player from a single attack although takes a few seconds to recover.
Missile
A high range ability which allows the player to fire out large rocket-powered turnips the turnips are fired in volleys of three which scatter in different directions one travelling a short distance in an inverted parabola, one flying upwards towards the sky and the third moving in a sine wave before exploding after a short distance, enemies hit by the turnips or the explosion are defeated or damaged.
Fluidic
This ability allows the player to utilize fluid in combat, the fluid itself is unspecified but has a rainbow-like appearance. Mario and co. are able to perform a dive into the fluid evading enemies during a jump more easily and can throw the fluid in a semi-short range attack that knocks enemies back although only deals half as much damage as a fireball, it does however allow for hitting multiple enemies. The power-up also allows the player to run on water and can be seen as the water is actually repelling Mario and co.
Will-O-Wisp
This ability allows the player to generate a Will-O-Wisp around their player character, the Will-O-Wisp mechanically will grow in size becoming more powerful the longer it goes undamaged, the player can unleash the Will-O-Wisp at an enemy dealing damage, it flies in a very slow descent and so is effective against long distance aerial enemies. The Will-O-Wisp also serves to protect the player from oncoming attacks, by rotating around the player it can deflect attacks coming from in front or behind the player at certain times.
Mix Bro.
This power-up causes Mario and co. to throw weapons in a semi-random pattern, the order of the weapons themselves is completely random but one iteration of each weapon must be thrown before the second iteration of that weapon appears. The weapons include a Fireball, Ice Ball, Hammer, Boomerang, Petrifying Snake, Rocket-powered Turnip, Thwimp and Para-? Block. Each projectile has its own properties including what enemies they can and cannot defeat.

Trivia
- The game takes place within the same world presented in Super Mario Odyssey in which the landmasses appear the same, the main difference being the Kingdoms which are visited
- Originally there were going to be more level types including dedicated Train Levels as well as a Flower House which would serve an unknown purpose
