Mario Kart X and Mario Kart Y are paired versions created by Greninja Fan Studios. They are followed by Mario Kart Z, an enhanced version of these games. Together, all three versions are the ninth installment in the Mario Kart series.
Racers[]
This game features version exclusive racers, a first in the Mario Kart series. SM represents small, MD represents medium, and LG represents large.

Items[]
As in every Mario Kart game, Mario Kart X and Mario Kart Y feature items that can be used to benefit the racer, both returning and new. For the first time in Mario Kart history, there are version exclusive items. One notable change is that all Triple Shells now trail behind the kart instead of orbiting the kart.
Item | Function | ||
---|---|---|---|
Green Shell |
Travels in a straight line and bounces off walls. Knocks over the player it hits. | ||
Triple Green Shell |
Three Green Shells trail behind the vehicle, protecting the user from incoming attacks. They can be thrown one by one. | ||
Red Shell |
Targets the nearest player ahead of the player and knocks it over. Throwing it backwards will make it travel in a straight line, like a Green Shell. | ||
Triple Red Shell |
Three Red Shells trail behind the vehicle, protecting the user from incoming attacks. They can be thrown one by one. | ||
Banana |
Protects the player from incoming items, and spins out other racers that hit it. | ||
Quintuple Banana |
Five Bananas trail behind the vehicle, protecting the user from incoming attacks. They can be dropped one by one. | ||
Triple Banana |
Three Bananas trail behind the vehicle, protecting the user from incoming attacks. They can be dropped one by one. | ||
Mushroom |
Provides a short speed boost to the player and can be used to take shortcuts and negate off-road terrain. | ||
Triple Mushroom |
Same as the Mushroom, except the user gets three speed boosts that can be used one by one to take shortcuts and negate off-road terrain. | ||
Golden Mushroom |
Provides the user with an infinite amount of speed boosts for a short period of time. | ||
Star |
The player obtains total invincibility for a moment and is able to knock over everything in its path including items, course obstacles, and other players, making them lose their current item. In addition, the player receives a speed boost and the ability to drive off-road without losing any speed. | ||
Lightning |
Strikes every racer except the user, shrining them, making them lose their items, and reducing their speed. | ||
Poison Mushroom |
A poisonous mushroom that is laid on the track and will move toward the nearest racer that isn't the user. Any racer that comes into contact with one will be shrunk, although if a shrunken racer comes into contact with one, they will return to normal size. | ||
Fake Item Box |
Resembles a real Item Box, but will blast anyone who runs into it upwards, making them drop their items. Much like in Mario Kart 64, it returns to actually being convincing instead of being painfully obvious like it was in its previous appearances from Double Dash to Wii, it can once again block incoming items, and can once again float in midair. | ||
Wingless Blue Spiny Shell |
The wingless variant of the Blue Spiny Shell travels along the ground on its way to first place, allowing it to hit other racers to benefit the user, and once it finds its target, it launches them upward. It can be destroyed with a Super Horn. | ||
Winged Blue Spiny Shell |
The winged variant of the Blue Spiny Shell travels in the air on its way to first place, and once it finds its target, it launches them upward. It can be destroyed with a Super Horn, but it doesn't hit racers on its way to first place and is therefore unable to help the user. | ||
Boo |
Turns the user invisible and allows them to steal another racer's item. It also provides invulnerability and negates the effects of off-road terrain, much like in Mario Kart DS. If no item is available for it to steal, it will bring back a Mushroom or a Triple Mushroom. | ||
Bob-omb |
After being thrown or dropped, it explodes after a moment or when a player comes too close, launching anything in its blast radius into the air and making them drop their items. It will also chase after players that comes by. | ||
Giant Banana |
A giant banana stays on the track until a kart touches it, causing it to spin out as well as splitting the banana into three smaller Bananas. It is resistant to most items, but it can be destroyed with certain items, though the Bowser Shell will get deflected. | ||
Bowser Shell |
A massive shell that functions similarly to a Green Shell, except it can bounce up to fifteen times before breaking, makes racers drop their items upon contact, and can resist being destroyed by some other items. | ||
Chain Chomp |
A massive Chain Chomp appears and dashes along the track, pulling the vehicle behind it. It then releases from the vehicle and keeps going until it hits a wall or goes off course. | ||
Bullet Bill |
Transforms the player into a Bullet Bill, which rockets down the entire track at high speeds on auto-pilot for a time that is determined by the player's current position. The Bullet Bill is invincible and can knock over items, course hazards and other players, which makes them lose any item in their possession. | ||
Lucky 7 |
Seven items encircle the player's kart. Because the Blooper is absent, it has been replaced by the Poison Mushroom (Fake Item Box if transferred over to Mario Kart X). | ||
Crazy 8 |
Eight items encircle the player's kart. Because the Blooper and Coin absent, they have been replaced by the Fake Item Box (Poison Mushroom if transferred over to Mario Kart Y) and the wingless variant of the Blue Spiny Shell (winged variant if transferred over to Mario Kart Y) respectively. | ||
Fire Flower |
Allows the player to throw fireballs that bounces off walls and cause other players to spin out of control on impact. If ten fireballs are used, this item wears off immediately. | ||
Ice Flower (new) |
Functions similarly to the Fire Flower, except racers hit by iceballs will be frozen in a solid block of ice that slides around and lose their items. They will break out of the ice after a few seconds. | ||
Super Leaf |
Gives the player's kart a tail that can be used to deflect items, knock over opponents, and collect coins. The tail will disappear after a moment or if the player is hurt. It can also be used in the air to allow the player to glide for a bit longer and use short stalls before continuing to fall, and also makes the player travel faster underwater when used. | ||
Piranha Plant |
Automatically chomps on obstacles and other racers, giving a short speed boost for each bite. | ||
Feather |
Returns to races after only being available in Battle Mode in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Allows users to jump high in the air, allowing them to jump over walls and gaps or take shortcuts. | ||
Yellow Shell (new) |
Functions similarly to the Red Shell, except it traps the affected racer in the ground for a few seconds. | ||
Triple Yellow Shell (new) |
Three Yellow Shells trail behind the vehicle, protecting the user from incoming attacks. They can be thrown one by one. | ||
Blue Shell (new) |
Functions similarly to the Red Shell, except it freezes the affected racer in a solid block of ice that slides around and makes them lose their items. They will break out of the ice after a few seconds. | ||
Triple Blue Shell (new) |
Three Blue Shells trail behind the vehicle, protecting the user from incoming attacks. They can be thrown one by one. | ||
Super Horn |
Emits a radial shockwave that knocks racers over and destroys projectiles, including both variants of the Blue Spiny Shell. | ||
Boomerang Flower |
The user can throw a Boomerang in front or behind the vehicle a total of three times. Racers hit with the Boomerang will spin out. Other items can be used in between throws. | ||
Hammer Flower (new) |
Functions similarly to the Fire Flower, except racers hit by hammers will flip over and lose their items. The hammers target the nearest racer ahead or behind the user when thrown similar to a Red Shell. | ||
Black Shell (new) |
Functions similarly to the Green Shell, except it explodes instead of breaking, and blasts the player it hits into the air. | ||
Triple Black Shell (new) |
Three Black Shells trail behind the vehicle, protecting the user from incoming attacks. They can be thrown one by one. | ||
Gold Shell (new) |
Functions similarly to the Red Shell, except it locks onto the three nearest racers ahead or behind the user before exploding, at which point it blasts the third player it hits into the air. | ||
Triple Gold Shell (new) |
Three Gold Shells trail behind the vehicle, protecting the user from incoming attacks. They can be thrown one by one. | ||
Banana Barrel (new) |
Appears on the front of the kart and fires sixteen Bananas onto the track, after which the item will disappear. The player must then avoid the Bananas to avoid spinning out. | ||
Bob-omb Cannon (new) |
Appears on the front of the kart and fires ten Bob-ombs onto the track, after which the item will disappear. The Bob-ombs will then explode, launching any unfortunate victim into the air. | ||
Double Bob-omb (new) |
Two Bob-ombs trail behind the vehicle, protecting the user from incoming attacks. They can be dropped one by one. | ||
Giga Bob-omb (new) |
Bounces along the track for a short period of time before exploding, producing a large blast radius that will launch anyone within the blast radius into the air. | ||
Mushroom Cannon (new) |
Appears on the front of the kart and fires ten Mushrooms onto the track, after which the item will disappear. The player can then use those Mushrooms to gain a speed boost. | ||
Dash Ring (new) |
Creates three rings that the player can use to gain temporary speed boosts, though it can also give opponents premature speed boosts. | ||
Bubble (new) |
Functions similarly to the Bullet Bill, though it is slower and does not harm other drivers, and the player can steer a little while in use. The Bubble pops after colliding with an obstacle, being hit with an item, or after a short period of time. | ||
Coin Box (new) |
Appears on the front of the kart and spews 40 Coins onto the track, after which the item will disappear. | ||
Capsule (new) |
Functions similarly to the Fireball, except they bounce toward the racers and flatten them instead of spinning them out. | ||
Super Bell (new) |
Functions similarly to the Super Horn, except it has three uses, spins out racers instead of knocking them over, and repels items instead of destroying them. |
