Due to the genetics of cat fur coloration, tortoiseshell cats (including calicoes) are nearly always female. The only exceptions are XXY males, which are very rare (and usually sterile).
In the True Meaning of Smekday, we never learned why Pig was called "Pig," and that she likes Oh because Oh smells like fish (never touched upon in the movie). Tip considered her a traitor for trying to join the Boov. Also, the Gorg were allergic to her.
