All Storms End is a side story published through the official website of The Dragon Prince. The short story revolves around Zubeia as she reveals more about Avizandum to Azymondias. It is part of a short story series called "Reflections".[1]

Summary[]

Zubeia is flying through a great storm that has fallen across Xadia. As a pain swells in Zubeia's heart, she finds a clearing near a waterfall for her to rest on. Zubeia then sees Rex Igneous rising from the nearby pool before he taunts her about what lies in the heart of a storm, which forces her to wake up from her nightmare inside her lair in the Storm Spire. Zubeia shifts her weight back to seek the comfort of Avizandum's warm scales and slow, thrumming breath before she remembers that he is no longer with her. She is dismayed to find Zym's hollow empty and flies out to find him playing in the raging storm around Thunderfall, the final resting place of Avizandum.

Zubeia bluntly orders Zym to return to the Storm Spire, but the dragonling objects since he has yet to understand his mother's grief. As Zubeia looks back at Avizandum's petrified body, she asks Zym about what he sees when he gazes upon his father. Zym responds by puffing his chest out, fluffing his mane, spreading his wings, and barking a jolt of lightning. Zubeia guesses that Zym sees power when looking at Avizandum before she regales her son with facts of his father being the powerful guardian of Xadia who ensured the safety of his family, other dragons, and elves. Zubeia informs Zym about how Avizandum once dragged a great thunderstorm across half of Xadia to end a drought in the Far Reaches, how he forced a Shadow-Eater that was haunting the southern Moonshadow Elf tribes into daylight before he destroyed it himself, and how he struck down human invaders at the Border for centuries.

The excited Zym then proceeds to chase a nearby Zaphopper before Zubeia gathers him from the smaller creature, telling him to leave it be. Zubeia lets out a sigh as the sight causes her to reflect on the time when Rex Igneous accused Avizandum for tormenting humans as if they were ants, though she cannot deny that her mate enjoyed reveling in his victories and leaving the battered remains of human armies in his wake as tribute to his triumphs. Zym then learns from his mother that humans hated his father for his actions at the Border, and how that hatred took Avizandum from his family after it festered and took the form of a sharp spear. Zubeia wanted to keep Zym safe forever, but she knows that such instinct could consume, corrupt, and almost killed both her and her son, but she is grateful that both of them manage to survive. Zubeia acknowledges that she wants Zym to grow up in a better world and musters her courage before she takes him to Avizandum's petrified body.

Zym Playing

Zubeia tells Avizandum on how much she missed him before she asks Zym on what he currently sees. Zym responds by stretching a claw out to his father. Zubeia initially assumed regret or pain before she realizes that Zym sees love when he looks at his father. Zubeia confesses that even though Avizandum was many things, he ultimately loved his family and died reaching to the Storm Spire to protect his unborn son. Zubeia nuzzles and assures Zym that Avizandum's bravery and loyalty lives in him before telling him that he will be his own many things and that she will always love him like his father did. A heavy gust of wind soon drives the rain to the dragons, prompting Zubeia to fling one of her wings open to the space where Avizandum's was broken off, allowing Zym to be sheltered in both of his parents' shadows. As Zym comforts Zubeia, a sharp flash of lightning momentarily gives Avizandum a gentle smile.

Trivia[]

  • The story plays before the events of "Rebirthday".
  • Zym's pillow that is in the shape of a jelly tart he had brought from Katolis is a reference to the side story "The Royal Council".
