Avizandum was an Archdragon of the Sky and the most recent King of the Dragons, with his era beginning 300 years before the present, shortly after the mysterious death of Luna Tenebris.[9] He was the mate of Zubeia and the father of Azymondias. All other dragons accepted him as their king, and the elves, too, respected him as the most powerful creature in all of Xadia. Though no humans knew his true name, they fearfully called him "Thunder", for when he spoke, his voice shook the earth and the sky.[10] He was responsible for imprisoning Aaravos after the Startouch Elf was revealed to be the one who orchestrated all the great crises in the world.[11] He was killed by Harrow, who used dark magic provided by Viren to avenge the death of his wife Sarai.[1]

Three years after his death, Avizandum was resurrected by Ziard as a restless spirit,[5] as part of Aaravos's plan to create an Eternal Night.[6] However, Avizandum chose to turn against and destroy the Startouch Elf's physical form after he remembered his love for his mate and son.[12]

Appearance[]

Avizandum was a gigantic Storm Dragon with yellow eyes, light blue scales, dark blue underside, dark blue claws, and a mane of white hair that grew from his chin, neck, wings, and the tip of his tail. His head sported multiple protruding horns, his nose featured four bumps, while both of his wings had a few holes and tears on their membranes. He also had spikes jutting out from each of his elbows, as well as a row of them lining over the top of his tail.

Personality[]

Avizandum was respected by both the elves and other dragons, implying that he was a strong and revered leader. He stood guard at the Border that kept Xadia and the Human Kingdoms apart for centuries, patrolling it vigilantly from dawn until dusk.[13] He was determined in maintaining peace and prosperity in Xadia by ending droughts, destroying rogue creatures,[14] and abolishing cults that were plaguing his reign.[15]

Avizandum was very intolerant towards humans and protective of Xadia's inhabitants, as he did not hesitate to kill members of Harrow's expedition party after they trespassed into Xadia and murdered an innocent Magma Titan to retrieve its heart.[16] He also allowed Moonshadow Elves and Whirlpool Dragons to cross the Border so they could kill innocent humans in their own lands.[17] He did, however, give Harrow and Viren a chance to leave Xadia unharmed when he was guarding his only egg.[1]

Although Avizandum was a revered and noble ruler, much like Harrow, he did not always make the best decisions, which led to some of his actions being questioned by several inhabitants of Xadia.[18] According to Rex Igneous, Avizandum felt big and powerful when he provoked and destroyed human armies as if they were ants, and that he would love to fight and die in an endless war with the Human Kingdoms.[3] Zubeia does not deny that Avizandum enjoyed reveling in his victories and that he would leave the battered remains of human armies in his wake as tribute to his triumphs.[14]

However, despite Avizandum's intimidating exterior and aggressive nature, he possessed profound love for both Zubeia and Azymondias.[14] Before he succumbed to his death via dark magic, Avizandum struggled to return to the Storm Spire and shed a tear knowing that he would never see his son grow up.[1]

After Ziard's spirit resurrected Avizandum per Aaravos's instructions,[5] the former Dragon King became a mindless puppet of the Startouch Elf. Avizandum could not recognize those he cared about and was more than willing to kill anyone who challenged Aaravos.[6] But after Zubeia reminded him of his love for his family, Avizandum remembered is true self, allowing him to break free from Aaravos's control and started attacking his former enthraller. Avizandum then delivered the bite to destroy Aaravos's physical form, sacrificing himself so that his son could live.[12]

Skills and Abilities[]

As an Archdragon of the Sky, Avizandum possessed numerous abilities that made him the most powerful creature in the world.

Sky Primal Connection[]

Avizandum possessed a vast connection to the Sky and was at his strongest during a storm and at high altitudes. He could summon lightning from the clouds, channel them through his body, and fire them from his mouth. It is said that when Avizandum spoke, his voice shook the earth and the sky. Avizandum could also transform his body into lightning, arriving instantaneously in a deafening crash, and utterly destroy anything in his path.[10] According to Zubeia, Avizandum was able to drag a great thunderstorm across half of Xadia to end a drought in the Far Reaches.[14] His eyes would occasionally glow blue when he performed his abilities.[16]

Magic Resistance[]

When Harrow made his move to kill Avizandum, Viren cast an immobilizing spell to stop the Archdragon from attacking. However, Avizandum was able to break free from the spell by channeling lightning through his body.[1]

Temperature Resistance[]

Avizandum seemed to be impervious to heat and lava, as he was able to guard the volcanic regions of the Border from dawn until dusk for centuries. He was also able to effortlessly break out from a wave of ice that was directed towards him by Viren with no signs of side effects after being partially and temporarily frozen.[16]

Physical Attributes[]

Due to his massive size, Avizandum was incredibly strong, as he made the ground shake just by stomping on it, and could easily send humans and horses flying with a single swat of his tail and his feet.[1] He was also able to spot enemies from thousands of miles away.[19]

Upon being resurrected, Avizandum still retained much of his tremendous strength. He was able to trade blows with Rex Igneous to a standstill without tiring before killing him with a fatal bite.[6] He was also strong enough to use his claws to lift Aaravos to the sky.[12]

Flight[]

Avizandum was able to fly at great speed without showing signs of exhaustion. He was fast enough to swiftly catch up to Viren and Sarai who were fleeing towards the Breach on horseback.[16]

Trivia[]

  • The name "Avizandum" is derived from the Latin word "Avizare", which means "to consider".[20]
  • Avizandum's earlier designs featured a crown of horns, though the idea was saved to reuse on Sol Regem instead. He now derives uniqueness from his crackling lightning and furry mane.[4]
  • Some of Avizandum's roars are similar to those of the dragons from Dragon Booster.
