"Goz and Mez" (手を出すな!エンマ様の秘密の果実 Te o Dasu na! Enma-sama no Himitsu no Kudamono, lit. "Hands Off! Enma-sama's Secret Fruit") is the 7th episode of the Vegeta Saga in the uncut Dragon Ball Z series. This episode first aired in Japan on July 26, 1989. Its original American airdate was July 5, 2005.
Summary[]
The ones responsible for hitting Goku are revealed to be Goz and Mez, two heavily muscled guardian demons who inform him that he has fallen into Hell. On Earth, Tien and Chiaotzu begin their climb up Korin Tower in order to receive training from Kami. Launch who has followed the pair, starts to ransack a nearby Teepee but is confronted by Bora and his son Upa.
Back in Hell, Goz strikes a deal with Goku: if he can outperform him at one game of his choice, he will help him return to Snake Way. Goz challenges Goku to a sumo match but loses when Goku uses the force of his palm strikes to knock Goz over the line. Good to his word, he tries to put him back on the Road using a seesaw, but Goku keeps smacking his head on the invisible one-way barrier between Snake Way and Hell. Next up Mez challenges Goku to a game of tag, if he can catch him then he will agree to show him the secret route back to Snake Way.
Meanwhile, Gohan is shown playfully dodging the Sabertooth Tiger as he gathers berries and nuts. He speedily dodges and jumps away from the beast, eventually tiring it out to the point of exhaustion. After which Gohan takes off again as he prompts the big cat to keep on chasing after him.
Goku and Mez begin their game of tag but try as he might Mez is not able to shake Goku and gets caught when Goku tricks him. They show Goku the way out of Hell, but it leads to inside King Yemma's desk drawer. Now Goku has to travel the entire length of Snake Way from the beginning.

Differences from the manga[]
- The entire events of this episode were exclusive to the anime.
Trivia[]
- The Dragon Ball GT episode, "The Game After Life", had a similar plot where Goku's struggles in Hell were very similar to what he did while he was in Sugoroku Space.
- Two souls are heard barking in the Japanese version. It's most likely evil dogs that were sent to hell by Yemma. They can be fought as enemies in Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku. Another dead dog appears in the manga panel of "Strongest in the Heavens!" (this time in heaven, with a body instead of a cloud).
- Bora and Upa return here after being absent since the Dragon Ball episode "Prelude to Vengeance". They would next be seen during the Kid Buu Saga in "People of Earth Unite".
- Goz and Mez are credited to Chris Rager and Mike McFarland respectfully in the Funimation dub, but they are both performed by Christopher Sabat here as they were in "Vegeta's Respect". The former actors play them in "Warriors of the Dead" and in the Dragon Ball Z Kai episode "Hang In There, Kakarot! You Are No. 1!" (though Justin Cook played Mez in the former). McFarland also voiced Mez in the original Funimation version of "Transformed at Last". Weirdly, Sabat redubbed McFarland in the latter episode in the remastered dub whilst Mark Britten's performance as Goz was retained, yet Sabat is credited as both anyways.
- Upa is voiced in Japanese by Masaaki Ōkura, replacing Mitsuko Horie as his childhood self. This is notable in the sense that, in the original Japanese version, most Dragon Ball characters do not typically get a new performer after they are depicted at a different age with the later exceptions of Dende (Tomiko Suzuki -> Hiro Yūki) and Uub (Megumi Urawa -> Atsushi Kisaichi). Okura would be replaced by Takeshi Kusao when Upa appears later in "People of Earth Unite" and has voiced the character ever since. Also Banjō Ginga would voice Bora for the final time here; Kōzō Shioya would take over as Bora for his cameo in the aforementioned episode.
- In the Funimation dub, Bora's actor Dameon Clarke plays Upa, albeit using a lighter and younger sounding voice than his father's. He replaces Eric Vale who played adult Upa in "People of Earth Unite". Clarke also had an utterance as Upa during Dragon Ball GT in "Piccolo's Decision", but this was the only time he’d have proper dialogue as the character.
- Hell is rebranded/censored as HFIL (Home For Infinite Losers) in the Saban/Canadian dub as Saban Entertainment's policy would not harbor such. The text on Goz and Mez's shirts would be the most prevalent example.
- The scene of Launch running afoul of Upa and Bora while trying to follow Tien up Korin Tower is removed from the Saban/Canadian dub of this episode, likely due to her threatening Bora with a shotgun and also shooting at Upa as well as Bora staring for a period at her behind.
