Funky's Flights II is the name of Funky Kong's air service for accessing the overworld map of the Crocodile Isle in the game Donkey Kong Country 2.

Overview[]

Funky Kong reworked his business practice in time for Donkey Kong Country 2, now offering flight service around the Crocodile Isle in his airship, and being called Funky's Flights II. There is a Funky's Flights II in every world of the island, except for the Lost World. Because it is impossible for Diddy and Dixie Kong to access the overworld map of the island without defeating a boss, the service is a safer alternative. Upon arriving at Funky's Flights II, Funky will present the heroes with his airship for them to fly around in. However, the vehicle can only access areas that the Kongs have already unlocked, as a means of preventing the player from skipping stages.

In the Super Nintendo Entertainment System version, the Biplane Barrel is the airship of the service, and for the first use of it, Funky would charge Diddy and Dixie two Banana Coins at every location. However, any other later flights would be free in the same place.

In the Game Boy Advance version, the Funky's Flights II possesses a Gyrocopter instead of a Biplane Barrel. A payment of Banana Coins for the initial use is no longer required. Upon the player reaching any location of the service, and completing a single mission within a time limit for Funky Kong, the gorilla will make the airship always available for free by a prompt at the right screen of the pause menu in the maps of the game. In fact, in the same game version, calling the airship is the only way of leaving maps of cleared worlds after them being revisited, because clearing boss stages again does not send the Kongs back to the overworld map of the Crocodile Isle. Besides, in each location of the Funky's Flights II, there is a mission accessible by Golden Barrels where the player must control the Gyrocopter in order to complete a task and land the vehicle on a helipad within a time limit. By completing each of these missions once, the player receives single DK Coins.

Minigames[]

The missions available in the Funky's Flights II of the GBA version of Donkey Kong Country 2 are minigames. They are specific ones for each world of the Crocodile Isle (except for the Lost World). After they are unlocked in the main game mode, each minigame can also be played by accessing Funky's Flights in the Bonus Games option at the main menu screen. The player is able to set time records by completing the missions quickly. The player's current best time for clearing them is displayed on a sign at each Funky's Flights II in the main game. It is also possible for two players to play the same missions in the multiplayer mode by using a Game Link Cable[1] between two Game Boy Advance systems.

During the missions, the Gyrocopter possesses a green durability meter. If the meter is depleted completely by the vehicle taking too much damage, the airship explodes. After that, the player can choose to abort the mission. By the player continuing it, the Gyrocopter will return to the initial helipad and the time counter will continue from the same instant when the airship exploded, however, the progress of the current mission will be keep. The same also happens if the the Gyrocopter goes underwater, and its air supply is depleted completely. In the missions where the objectives are to locate objects or hostages, there is usually a radar at the screen in order to assist the search. During some missions, there are red boxes scattered around the environments containing limited ammunition. The ammunition can be used to shoot at and defeat enemies or destroy barriers. Green boxes displaying a white wrench icon on them refill the entire durability meter of the Gyrocopter after they are collected. By the player collecting watches displaying the number ten, they reduce the time counter of the mission in ten seconds. Oddly, the regular collectables mentioned can be also shoot at and blow up by the airship. Usually, it is also possible to defeat regular enemies during missions by the vehicle simply colliding against them, and losing some durability in the process.

The missions of the Funky's Flights II are as follows by world locations of the Crocodile Isle:

  • Gangplank Galleon - Aerial Loop: The player must fly throughout twenty star rings around a bramble terrain and land on a second helipad within five minutes. Each ring appears once per time, forcing the player to follow a sequence. On the radar, the current star ring is indicated by a white ring. Some precision is required to fly the Gyrocopter throughout the center of the rings. The player must also avoid projectiles shoot by spider enemies which are present around the area. It is possible to defeat each of these enemies by shooting three times at them, but it is advisable to just avoid them.
  • Crocodile Cauldron - Submerged Stint: The player must tow a Treasure Chest and traverse a sunken ship hold area, delivering it to Funky Kong next to a second helipad within ten minutes. A winch is deployed and retracted by the player pressing the "Select" button. Upon the hook touching the chest, it will attach to the object automatically. If the tow cable is caught on the environment, the Gyrocopter will drop down the chest. For most sections, the vehicle must move underwater, with air supply being limited and refilled by large bubbles for fifty-nine or forty-nine seconds. Ammunition boxes must also to be collected and used to explode some crate barriers on the way. Spiders, Puftups and Shuris are enemies encountered during the mission. If the Gyrocopter touches the Puftups or Shuris, it will blow up instantly, forcing the player to shoot them down or avoid them carefully in order to move forward.
  • Krem Quay - Kongstruction: The player must locate five pieces of a Donkey Kong's statue around a castle setting, and tow them back to their stand within five minutes. A white arrow at the screen will constantly point towards current pieces, and the same statue pieces are indicated by a white square on the radar. The pieces can be collected at any order, but the torso piece cannot be placed on the stand without the legs, both arms pieces cannot be placed without the torso, and the head piece cannot be placed without both arms. Flitters will appear constantly and try to steal recovered statue pieces away, even if they are already on the stand. During the mission, the Gyrocopter possesses unlimited regular ammunition to shoot down the enemies.
  • Krazy Kremland - Kongnapped: The player must find and rescue six kidnapped members of the Kong Family inside a giant beehive within five minutes. Only a single Kong appears for time, and they are indicated as white stick figures on the radar. Some Zingers will fly around the area and grab the primates eventually. The Kongs will cry for help when it happens. If the player takes too long to shoot down the Zinger and the enemy takes the primate away to a passage at the left side of the beehive, the current Kong will be lost for good. There is a total of ten opportunities to save Kongs, with the mission being instantly considered a failure if five primates are lost. After finding a Kong, the player must land the Gyrocopter nearby the primate and take them back to the initial helipad.
  • Gloomy Gulch - Cool Sounds: The player must find and tow Funky's boombox[2] across a submerged, icy terrain, and deliver it to the primate located at the same level of the helipad, within three minutes. The player must shoot at sets of three arrow buttons on the walls in order to lower the water level and be able to progress. Most of the sets of buttons have a random combination to shoot and activate them. A green arrow indicates the correct sequence, and a red arrow indicates the wrong sequence, and by missing once, the player must restart the combination. Some Zingers stand flying on the way of the Gyrocopter. At the lowest level of the area, a single Kloak also guards the boombox by constantly throwing wooden barrels. However, the Barrels cannot damage the vehicle, but if the Gyrocopter collides against the enemy once, it will explode on the spot. During the mission, the airship possesses unlimited regular ammunition and ten seconds of air supply.
  • K. Rool's Keep - Kongnapped 2: The player must search and rescue five Kongs around a sunken ship hold within three minutes. All five primates must be found once before the Gyrocopter be able to return to the initial helipad. Arrow buttons on the walls pointing down or up must be shoot at in order to lower or rise the water level, respectively. Crate barriers blocking the way must be moved by changing the water level. There is no radar for helping the player to find the Kongs, however they are located on specific places of the area. The air supply of the Gyrocopter is limited by only ten seconds, and there is a single underwater spot where it can be refilled by large bubbles.
  • The Flying Krock - Toxic Kongstruction: The player must locate and tow five pieces of a Donkey Kong's statue back to their stand inside a castle area flooded by toxic waste within ten minutes. Upon contact with the green waste, the Gyrocopter will explode. Sets of three arrow buttons on the walls must be shoot at specific sequences in order to lower the waste level. Green arrows indicate a correct sequence, and red arrows indicate a wrong sequence. At some passages, there are Flitters blocking the way. Contact with these enemies will also explode the airship on the spot. The player must collect bomb ammunition and use it to dispose the Flitters safely. Bombs can be dropped after the player holding the "L" button to keep the vehicle facing the screen. A white arrow at the screen will point towards the location of the current statue pieces, and the same pieces are indicated on the radar by white squares, but the player can collect the pieces at any order. However, the torso piece cannot be placed on the stand without the legs, both arms pieces cannot be placed without the torso, and the head piece cannot be placed without both arms. Upon finding and towing each piece for the first time, it will always rise the toxic waste to its highest level, forcing the Gyrocopter to ascend quickly and avoid the hazard. If the player is able to activate any sets of arrow buttons before the green waste catches them up, it will stop rising.

Trivia[]

  • In the SNES version of the game Donkey Kong Country 2, the Funky Barrel can be seen toppled over on the background of the Funky's Flights II and behind a black sign with "FUNKY flights" written on it.
  • As soon as the player enters the Funky's Flights II in the SNES version of the game Donkey Kong Country 2, the entire scenery shakes, going up and down constantly. In both game versions, the sky can also be seen in the background of the location. It can be assumed that the service takes place on a large airship shaped like a surfboard.
    • In the GBA version of the same game, the icon for the Funky's Flights II inside world maps is Funky Kong's head over a large surfboard displaying some palm trees, floating up and down constantly.
  • During the game Donkey Kong Land 2, Funky Kong operates the Funky's Flights. The service is modeled after and possesses the same function of the one seen in the SNES version of the game Donkey Kong Country 2: being one of the two ways of accessing the overworld map of Crocodile Isle, demanding an initial fee of two Banana Coins in each location, and using the Biplane Barrel to move around the island.
  • In the GBA version of the game Donkey Kong Country 2, during both missions of rescuing Kongs at the Funky's Flights II, all the hostages are depicted as Tiny Kong, sporting a young appearance similar to the one seen in the game Donkey Kong 64 for Nintendo 64.
  • In the game DK: Jungle Climber, after the player collecting all Oil Barrels inside a world, they can prompt Funky Kong in the same map to use the Biplane Barrel for accessing an extra stage.
