"We Don't Talk About Bruno" is a song that is featured in Disney's 2021 animated feature film Encanto. It is sung by Pepa and Félix, alongside their children Dolores and Camilo as they warn Mirabel not to mention her uncle Bruno, who has the gift of telling prophecy.

Some of the other family members and some villagers also sing about what happened when Bruno's predictions came true during the song.

An alternate version was performed at the 94th Academy Awards that featured the whole cast, sans Rhenzy Feliz, but featured Megan Thee Stallion, Becky G and Luis Fonsi singing new lyrics that reference the Oscars and the song's success.

Lyrics

Pepa:
We don't talk about Bruno, no, no, no!
We don't talk about Bruno, but
It was my wedding day

Félix:
It was our wedding day

Pepa:
We were getting ready
And there wasn't a cloud in the sky

Félix:
No clouds allowed in the sky!

Pepa:
Bruno walks in
With a mischievous grin

Félix:
Thunder!

Pepa:
You telling this story or am I?

Félix:
I'm sorry, mi vida, go on

Pepa:
Bruno says, "It looks like rain"

Félix:
Why did he tell us?!

Pepa:
In doing so, he floods my brain

Félix:
Abuela, get the umbrellas

Pepa:
Married in a hurricane

Félix:
What a joyous day
But, anyway

Both:
We don't talk about Bruno, no, no, no!
We don't talk about Bruno

Dolores:
Hey!
Grew to live in fear of Bruno stuttering or stumbling
I can always hear him sort of muttering and mumbling
I associate him with the sound of falling sand
Ch, ch, ch

It's a heavy lift with a gift so humbling
Always left Abuela and the family fumbling
Grappling with prophecies they couldn't understand
Do you understand?

Camilo:
A seven-foot frame
Rats along his back
When he calls your name
It all fades to black
Yeah, he sees your dreams
And feasts on your screams (Hey!)

All:
We don't talk about Bruno, no, no, no!
(We don't talk about Bruno, no, no!)

All:
We don't talk about Bruno
(We don't talk about Bruno!)

Señora Pezmuerto:
He told me my fish would die
The next day, dead! (No, no!)

Osvaldo:
He told me I'd grow a gut!
And just like he said (No, no!)

Señor Flores:
He said that all my hair would disappear
Now look at my head (No, no!/Hey!)

All:
Your fate is sealed when your prophecy is read!

Isabela:
He told me that the life of my dreams
Would be promised and someday be mine
He told me that my power would grow
Like the grapes that thrive on the vine

Alma:
Óye, Mariano's on his way

Dolores:
He told me that the man of my dreams
Would be just out of reach
Betrothed to another

Dolores:
It's like I hear him now

Isabela:
Hey sis,
I want not a sound out of you
(It's like I can hear him now)

Dolores:
I can hear him now!

Mirabel:
Um, Bruno
Yeah, about that Bruno
I really need to know about Bruno
Gimme the truth and the whole truth, Bruno!

Camilo:
Isabela, your boyfriend's here! (Ahaha!)

All:
Time for dinner!

Camilo:
A seven-foot frame
Rats along his back
When he calls your name
It all fades to black
Yeah, he sees your dreams
And feasts on your screams

Trivia

  • According to Lin-Manuel Miranda, Bruno was given his name in order to fit the lyric "Bruno, no, no" into the song.[citation needed]
  • During Dolores' rapping verse in the song, Bruno can be seen walking on the second floor in the background and bopping his head to the beat of the music, which foreshadows that he never actually left the Casita.
  • Señora Pezmuerto's name seems to be a portmanteau of the Spanish word pez (meaning living fish) and muerto (meaning dead) reflecting the prophecy read to her by Bruno.
  • The song is inspired by Colombian Cha-cha-chá music.
  • The song hit #1 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart.[1]
    • The song also hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, being the second Disney feature song to do so alongside "A Whole New World" from Aladdin.
    • With the song peaking at number one on Billboard Hot 100, this makes Mirabel the first Disney female protagonist to achieve a number one song on the chart.
  • The part when all the members of the Madrigal family that have sung during the song started to sing their respective part in overlapping is a moment called madrigal, a moment in a song where several voices sing typically unaccompanied and arranged in elaborate counterpoint. Curiously, that's also the name of the main family of the movie.
    • For some reason, the only non-Madrigal to take part in this is Señora Pezmuerto.
  • The only Madrigals that did not actively participate in the song are Mirabel's parents, Antonio, and Luisa. Though, Luisa can later be seen present in the madrigal at the end of the song.
    • Though, according to Disney's official lyrics, when everyone says "he's here", along with the final lines of the song (apart from Mirabel), it includes Alma, Julieta, Agustin, and Luisa due to the color of text.
  • Camilo's line was originally written as "Seven-foot frame, all dressed in black, when he calls your name, there's no turning back." However, in the final version of the film, the lyric was changed to "Seven-foot frame, rats along his back, when he calls your name, it all fades to black."
    • Whereas Dolores' line was originally written as "He told me that the man of my dreams would be just out of my reach, betrothed to another. He told me I would suffer. Tonight I will suffer." It was soon changed to "He told me that the man of my dreams would be just out of my reach, betrothed to another, another. And I'm fine, and I'm fine, and I'm fine, I'm fine."
  • The Oscars version was notoriously disliked online due to the false advertising of its performance (there was no mention of the additional singers or lyrics) and for the new renditions self-serving congratulations of the Oscars.
