Venice has a long and rich history as a maritime republic, a cultural and artistic center, and a tourist destination. It is built on a group of 118 small islands that are separated by canals and linked by over 400 bridges. The city is famous for its architecture, art, music, cuisine, carnival, and gondolas. Venice is also known for its environmental and social issues, such as flooding, pollution, overcrowding, and depopulation.
The film was shot on location in Venice and at Shepperton Studios in England. The production used several historic sites and landmarks in Venice, such as St. Mark's Square, St. Mark's Basilica, Doge's Palace, Bridge of Sighs, Grand Canal, Rialto Bridge, Peggy Guggenheim Collection, and Palazzo Pisani Moretta. The film also recreated some of the city's iconic features using visual effects, such as carnival masks, costumes, and floats.
