"This Brain for Hire" is the second segment of the forty-seventh episode of Recess. It premiered on November 29, 1999.

Synopsis[]

Gretchen does other people's homework to get the money for a new bike.

Plot[]

The Recess Gang are riding their bikes when they stop to admire Ruddler's Red Rocket bike in the window. The Gang agree that the one who needs it the most is Gretchen as hers is old and beat up. Gretchen thanks the Gang, but admits that she would be unable to get it as she does not have the funds, her birthday passed and Christmas is far away. At school, Gretchen is the only person to complete her homework while everyone is forced to get a double load for the night, much to everyone's chagrin. The following day, Randall asks Gretchen to do his homework for him, promising to review what she wrote, and offers her money. She decides to take it.

When Lawson discovers that Randall made an A on his homework, he demands to know what he did and reveals that Gretchen "tutored" him. Word spreads and soon everyone asks Gretchen to "tutor" (simply do their homework) and in return they will pay her. She decides to do so so that she can get her bike. Gretchen becomes overworked doing everyone's homework, but charges through anyway to so that her money feels earned. Gretchen starts to fall behind while everyone's homework is fully answered, but when it comes time to do a pop quiz, everyone besides Gretchen fails, showing that no one bothered to use Gretchen's notes.

Gretchen goes to buy the red rocket with the money she earned, but a quick talk from Kelso, convinces her to go and make things right, angering Kelso's wife who is tired of him constantly being a moral advisor to kids. Gretchen goes door to door returning the money to the other kids while also helping them out with their homework. After another pop quiz, everyone manages to pass this time. Gretchen solemnly bemoans the fact that she does not have a bike, but the other kids are revealed to have pitched in and bought the bike for her as thanks for helping them pass. As Gretchen rides off, Gus realizes that they might have to get a car for Miss Grotke.
