"Snow Monkey See, Snow Monkey Do" is an episode of the Playhouse Disney animated series Stanley.
Summary[]
Lester begins to copy everything Stanley does. When Stanley starts getting annoyed by it, he reads about Snow Monkeys and learns how imitation can be a good thing.
Plot[]
Stanley is out in the backyard, playing in the snow, when his friend Lester arrives, wearing the exact same chimpanzee snowsuit that Stanley is wearing. Stanley shows Lester the snow turtle he’s building and Lester wants to build one too. Just then, Lionel comes out and tells them their dad made hot chocolate. Stanley runs inside and Lester immediately follows.
Inside the house, the boys are playing a game. Stanley pretends to be an animal, and Lester has to guess which. But when they switch turns, Lester copies the exact same animal Stanley was pretending to be, which the latter doesn’t find amusing. Stanley decides to just color instead, which Lester wants to do too. Stanley gets even more annoyed when Lester wants to use crayons just like him. After coloring, Stanley wants to make an igloo out of sugar cubes. Of course, Lester decides he wants to make one too and Stanley goes upstairs to get the supplies.
When Stanley gets to his room, Elsie notices that he seems rather bothered about something. Stanley explains that Lester is a great friend, but sometimes he copies everything he does, which Stanley doesn’t seem to like. Dennis suggests they figure out why Lester copies Stanley. He then explains that copying (or imitating) someone can be very useful in the animal kingdom.
Just then, Lionel comes into the room with the sugar cubes and reminds Stanley that Lester is still waiting downstairs. Stanley asks Lionel to help him log onto the computer, which he does. After Lionel leaves, Stanley searches the internet for animals that learn by imitation. There, he finds Japanese snow monkeys (also called macaques). Dennis and Stanley go into the computer and arrive in the islands of Japan.
The two discover that the monkeys’ thick fur helps to keep them warm during the day and use the snow at night to cool them down when they get too warm. They also find the monkeys tossing sand into the water to get food. As a result, the babies copy the same thing and, by doing so, learn how to get food for themselves. Stanley then remembers the things he learned from copying someone else, like when Lionel taught him how to tie his shoes, his mom showed him how to brush his teeth and when his dad taught him how to wash apples before eating them. Stanley then realizes that Lester was copying him so he could learn something new, meaning that copying someone can be a good thing after all.
Stanley then arrives home and Lester shows him that he made a fort out of real snow and Stanley is curious to learn how it’s done.
