Gideon is one of the first two antagonists to appear in the 2022 live-action remake of Pinocchio. He is a mute, anthropomorphic cat, and a bumbling stooge of Honest John, a shifty con artist.
Role in the film[]
Though Gideon barely does anything to contribute to the actual plot, he is seen always by Honest John's side with his usual flimsy, punch-drunk, and daffy self - often with pantomiming and provides movements for visual and slapstick humor.
Gideon accompanies Honest John as they spot and trail Pinocchio on his way to school and watches on as the fox persuades the puppet to abandon his studies in favor of a life of fame at Stromboli’s puppet show. With the puppet now convinced, the trio merrily marches to Stromboli’s caravan. When Jiminy finally catches up and attempts to intervene, Gideon spots him and pulls out his mallet to crush him, but accidentally knocks both John and himself out unconscious in the process. The pair later catch up with Pinocchio just as he is thrown out of the schoolhouse by the schoolmaster after trapping Jiminy in a glass jar to keep him from interfering again. After John uses the opportunity to further persuade Pinocchio to join Stromboli‘s show, they resume their merry march, with Gideon mockingly waving goodbye to the entrapped Jiminy as they pass by him. He and Honest John make no further appearances after that, making their fate unknown.
