Monstro is a gigantic and vicious whale and the fourth and final antagonist to appear in the 2022 live-action remake of Pinocchio.
He is based on both the character from the original story by Carlo Collodi and the character of the same name from the 1940 animated film.
Background[]
Physical appearance[]
Instead of being a gigantic sperm whale like in the original film, Monstro is reimagined as a giant whale-like sea monster-hybrid that is a cross between a humpback whale, a blue whale, a kraken, a great white shark, and a Mosasaurus, as well as some features of the "Terrible Dogfish" from the original book. This is evidenced by tentacles and multiple fins on his back.
Role in the film[]
As Pinocchio tries to reunite with Geppetto who is about to reunite with him, Monstro emerges from the ocean and swallows Geppetto, Figaro, Cleo, and Pinocchio inside while Sofia retreats from Monstro in fear, followed by Jiminy Cricket dismounting from Sofia in a plan for him to get inside Monstro. Jiminy urges Monstro to open his mouth so he can enter but Monstro could not hear Jiminy and refuses to open his mouth. Later, Pinocchio approaches Geppetto on a shipwreck and reunites with him, alongside Figaro and Cleo. In a plan to make Monstro open his mouth, Pinocchio starts a fire on the shipwreck followed by Geppetto adding oil to the fire to make it stronger inside Monstro. Outside, Jiminy notices Monstro opening his mouth due to the fire that Pinocchio and Geppetto did just as Jiminy manages to get inside the sea monster.
As Monstro starts opening his mouth, Pinocchio and Geppetto plan to escape with Figaro and Cleo with them on Geppetto's boat, alongside Jiminy who got inside Monstro who later sneezes them out due to the fire Pinocchio caused in a plan to escape from him. As Geppetto's boat gets out of Monstro, it gets smashed in half Pinocchio gets him out to safety. Monstro ferociously chases Pinocchio, Jiminy, Geppetto, Figaro, and Cleo across the ocean as the four see a cove from a distance in a plan to escape from Monstro. Pinocchio escapes with them, causing Monstro to slam his head onto a wall. As Pinocchio comes to the far end of the shore, Figaro, Cleo, and Jiminy are washed onto the shore. Geppetto, however, does not survive the blow, although he is later revived when Pinocchio sadly sings "When You Wish Upon a Star" when a magical tear came from Pinocchio's eye. Like for all the other antagonists in the remake, it is uncertain what exactly happened to Monstro.
