Maria Rambeau is a Marvel Comics character who appears in Captain Marvel and The Marvels, portrayed by Lashana Lynch. Maria is an Air Force lieutenant and the best friend of Captain Marvel, as well as the mother of Monica Rambeau.
An alternate version of the character, originating from Earth-838, becomes Captain Marvel, and is featured in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Another version of her adopts the alias Binary, and also exists in another universe, as seen in The Marvels.
Maria Rambeau was created by Roger Stern and Al Migrom.
Personality
Maria was a brave and headstrong woman with a love of flying, becoming a great pilot like her best friend, Carol Danvers. Maria also had a loving relationship with her daughter, Monica as she raised her on her own without having to marry someone. Although Maria did not believe the existence of aliens at first, she accepted their existence when encountering Skrulls and helped in the fight against the Kree. Like Carol, Maria disliked being looked down by others because of her gender and hated being called "young lady." Maria also had a compassionate side where she comforted Carol after the former discovered she had been deceived by the Kree for years, giving Carol the inspiration to always be the strong, independent woman she has always been.
Years after helping Carol in saving the Skrulls, Maria decided to create an organization known as S.W.O.R.D. to help protect Earth from extraterrestrial threats and kept having a close relationship with Monica as she grew up. When Monica disappeared from the Snap, Maria was optimistic that her daughter would be revived one day; a wish that came true sometime after Maria died of cancer.
Appearances
Captain Marvel
Maria was the best friend of Carol, and her colleague at the United States Air Force. She lived in Louisiana, with her younger daughter, Monica Because of Carol's strained relationship with her own family, Maria and Carol were close. One day, during one of their missions, Carol goes missing and is presumed dead. Six years pass, and Carol comes into contact with Maria, unaware of her own identity, or who Maria is. Maria is shocked to see her best friend alive, and Carol explains, she is a warrior alien from another planet, in an intergalactic war with shape-shifting aliens, known as skrulls. Maria manages to get through to Carol and reminds her of who she really is. Carol hugs and thanks Maria for reminding her and they are able to reconcile their friendship. Maria helps Carol save the Skrulls' home and returns to Monica. Back home, Maria advises Carol to help the universe and watches as her friend heroically helps those throughout the universe.
WandaVision
In the episode "We Interrupt This Program", it is revealed that Maria had cancer prior to 2018, when the Infinity War took place. Monica stayed by her mother's side as she went through her treatment and that she was successful in having it removed. However, Thanos's attack throughout the universe caused 50% of all living creatures to turn to dust, which took Monica's life right in front of Maria's eyes. It is later revealed that Maria died two years following the snap, as she scrummbled to her illness as it had returned.
When Hulk resurrects the fallen during the events of Avengers: Endgame, Monica resurrects at the hospital and learns of Maria's passing.
The Marvels
Maria appears in this film through flashbacks when Carol Davers, Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan are using fracking pods to relive Carol's memories, including when Maria and Carol first trained together and became friends, in the 80's. Maria is also mentioned by her daughter Monica, who expresses her loss of her mother and as she expresses to Carol that she wanted her aunt with her as she grew up.
Maria appears in another flashback, set in 2020, where she asked Carol to take care of Goose for her as her cancer had returned and didn't have long left to live, much to Monica's displeasure of seeing her late mother. Carol apologises to Monica for showing her Maria in her final months, as it was an accident. Monica tearfully tells Kamala that her mother died while she was blipped as Kamala has also seen this memory. Kamala expresses her condolences for Monica and comments that she thinks Maria would have been really cool to get to know. When Monica and Carol later make amends, they say Carol and Maria's catchphrase, "Higher. Faster. Further", to honour Maria. When Monica finds herself in another reality, she is shocked to see a woman who looks identical to Maria, known as Binary. Believing this woman to be her late mother, Monica asks Binary where they are and gets emotional, believing she is apologising to her mother for disappearing eight years earlier. A confused Binary has no idea what Monica is saying and Monica realises she is in alternate universe, parallel to her own.
