Nancy Tremaine is a supporting character in the 2007 Disney animated/live-action film Enchanted and its 2022 sequel Disenchanted. She is Robert Philip's girlfriend and a fashion designer, who lives in New York City. After Robert meets and falls in love with Giselle, Nancy leaves with Prince Edward, falling in love with him and marrying him, becoming the current queen of Andalasia.
Background[]
Personality[]
Nancy is portrayed as both a New Yorker and a dreamer of happily ever afters. She was shown to be very happy when Robert Philip gave her Giselle's bouquet with live doves, and was elated at the prospect of going to the King and Queen's Ball with Robert. This was seen again when Giselle was unconscious from the poisoned apple, she eventually learned of how much she and Robert were in love and decided for his happiness to let him kiss her awake to help her, and have their fairytale ending. Nancy owned a fabric store making dresses, which after she left, became Andalasia Fashions, run by Giselle. In the end, she ended up marrying Edward and fell in love with him for his truly charming and Princely qualities, in addition to their similar personalities. At the wedding, her cell phone rang, and after noticing the really good reception, she threw it away, and shared her true love's kiss.
Appearances[]
Enchanted[]
In the beginning of the film, Nancy is in a 5-year-long relationship with Robert. The morning after Giselle comes to New York City, she shows up at his apartment to take Morgan Philip to school and bond with each other. After seeing Giselle on top of Robert from the bathroom, she thinks he is cheating on her, and leaves.
After Giselle asks a pair of doves to give Nancy a bouquet from Robert and his invitation to go to the King and Queen's Ball, she comes around and comes to rather like this new spontaneous and romantic side of Robert she has not seen yet. At the ball, she is shown as having a wonderful time with Robert. When Giselle and Edward show up, she becomes infatuated with the charming nature of Edward, finding him very romantic. The two dance the King and Queen's waltz.
After, Edward and Giselle decide to leave, but not before Narissa, in disguise, poisons Giselle. Nancy calls the 911 Emergency hotline asking for help. When true love's kiss from Edward does not work on Giselle, Nancy realizes that Giselle and Robert are truly made for each other and gives Robert her permission to kiss Giselle awake, which leads to the climax of the film.
After the battle, Nancy sees Giselle's forgotten shoe. After putting on Giselle's shoe, Nancy realizes it fits so once again and noticing his chivalry and never-ceasing charm, she agrees to marry Edward. During their wedding, Nancy's phone rings and is amazed at how Andalasia has a good reception before tossing her phone away. She then pulls Edward down fast and then kisses him. They are married in Andalasia and live happily ever after.
Disenchanted[]
Ten years after the first movie, it is clear that Andalasia has rubbed off on Nancy. She now dresses in more regal costumes, and even has started singing.
She and Edward appear in Monroeville via a portal from a wishing well in Giselle's family's new house's backyard. They present a belated birthday present to Giselle and Robert's baby, Sofia, an Andalasian wishing wand.
Some time later, Nancy and Edward meet Morgan in Andalasia, where they discover Giselle made her wish for a fairytale life, causing a vortex to appear in the sky and suck everything magic from Andalasia to Monroeville. They visit Giselle's old house where they discover her memory tree is dying. When Morgan makes the memories magical again, Nancy and Morgan return to Monrolasia to save Giselle while Edward stays behind to hold down the fort.
Nancy and Morgan go up to Morgan's tower to retrieve the Memory Tree she made with Giselle to help save Giselle. Along the way to the ball, they meet up with Tyson and Robert. Nancy tells Robert that Giselle had been cursed by her wish and they have to save her. They arrive in time to save Giselle, but not before Malvina puts a sleeping curse on Morgan and forces Giselle to hand over the wand, which breaks. Nancy watches through the fountain in the castle in terror as Andalasia gets destroyed. She watches Edward limping in her direction as she holds out her hand to his for what may well be the final time before the clock strikes midnight.
Some time later, after everything returns to normal, Nancy and Edward return to Monroeville to visit Giselle and her family, as Edward does a pretend sword fight with the local children. She and Edward give Giselle a magical silver platter, which they claim will provide any meals they wish. Giselle, having gone through the ordeal with the Wand of Wishes, suggests they make the wish instead, to which Nancy and Edward agree.
Trivia[]
- Since Nancy was going to become Morgan's stepmother at the beginning of the film, she was given the last name of Cinderella's stepmother from the 1950 film Cinderella. But as a twist, Nancy is nothing like Lady Tremaine; she is kind, forgiving, generous, and selfless.
- Ironically, Idina Menzel would later actually portray Cinderella's wicked stepmother in Amazon's 2021 version of Cinderella.
- Idina Menzel, who portrays her, is also the voice of Elsa from Frozen, which makes Nancy her first of two roles as the voice of a princess and a queen in the Disney franchise.
- Ironically, Elsa says people cannot marry a man they just met while Nancy, who is played by the same actress, did marry a man she just met.
- In Disenchanted, during "Love Power", Nancy sings "Let it grow, let it glow", an allusion to Elsa's song "Let It Go".
- Despite marrying a prince, Nancy is not an official Disney Princess, or at least not seen as one by many Disney fans.
- This is possibly due to the fact that she doesn't have a primary nor distinctive role in the film.
- Idina Menzel, however, would voice Elsa from Frozen, a character, despite not being an official member, has a close association with the Disney Princesses.
- Considering the reason Giselle didn't become an official Disney Princess, it's no surprise no other character who appeared in the real world would become.
- She is also the only "real world native" in the film to be seen in animated form. Morgan visits Andalasia in the sequel.
- This role did not require any singing, which was an unusual role for Idina Menzel. According to Menzel, she was glad to be hired for the role just based on her acting talents.[1]
- She did end up singing two songs in the sequel, including a song heard over the end credits.
- Nancy is the first royal character that Idina Menzel starred as in a Disney film.
- For Disenchanted, her animated counterpart was redesigned for unknown reasons.
- Nancy and Prince Edward were going to sing a duet at the end of the first film, but the song was cut from the final film.[2]
- There's a delete scene where Nancy talk about her old fantasy of waiting for a prince in knight of shining armor that reveal that she's hopeless romantic.
