Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters Online was an online game based on the Disneyland attraction of the same name. It was a downloadable game which users could download to compete with other guests at the Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters attraction at the Disneyland Resort to know who is the best Space Ranger like Buzz himself.
At an unknown date, the game's online services were shut down, leaving the game only playable in training mode for those who have downloaded the game via official attraction's official site at the Disneyland Resort prior to the online services being discontinued.
Gameplay[]
To start the game, the player must choose a spaceship of their choice, the Light Ranger Cruiser, the Medium Ranger Cruiser, or the Heavy Ranger Cruiser. After choosing a spaceship to begin their adventure, players control their ship using the mouse and then clicking the left mouse button to fire at incoming enemies and targets while being commanded by Buzz Lightyear (with pre-recorded dialogues) who is assisting the player via navigator to help fight against Emperor Zurg who is sending an all-out attack across the galaxy. Throughout the game, Buzz gives out commands to help the player fight against enemies marked with Z symbols (known as Zurg's Forces) which appear and attempt to attack the player by firing shots at them which can cause damage to the player upon contact. The damage caused by enemies depends on which ship the player has chosen based on their toughness and how much damage it can receive.
Modes[]
The game featured two modes:
Online Mode[]
The discontinued mode where players could compete against other opponents. After the player chooses a ship of their choice, they will be taken to the Gamma Quadrant Space Port menu where they have the option to team up with another player, wait to team up with another player, or play the mode without teaming up. The first two options when chosen required the player to wait for another player to be their assistant in helping defeat large groups of enemies (especially when it comes to bosses). The third option allowed the player to participate without another player assisting them.
When gameplay begins, Buzz gives a command to the player to help stop Zurg from interfering his plans to take over the galaxy. During gameplay, the player must shoot the enemies with (including the ones with Z symbols) to earn points; shooting the enemies marked with Z symbols light up special targets on the Buzz Lightyear attraction when operating, allowing players themselves to earn extra points during the ride itself. In addition to this when guests at the attraction hit specially-lit targets, they receive a chance to rescue a member of the Green Squadron where points were earned upon rescuing them.
Throught the mode, enemies part of Zurg's Forces (Batterybots, Dogbots, Cyclopsbots, and Boxobots) appear and attempt to attack the player. The player takes damage from enemies whenever their ship comes into contact with a projectile. Batterybots are the most primary enemies the player should defeat, which drop batteries that provide shields for their ship upon defeating them. On occasions, targets with Z symbols marked with arrows indicate that the player must shoot them like in other rail shooter games. However, some hostile enemies can blend in in sections where these targets appear, which the player must take care of the enemies attacking their ship before taking on the targets. Bosses can occasionally appear during this mode and can prevent the player from proceeding further such as Gigantobot where the player must dodge its attack and then shoot the targets marked by the arrows to counter its attack. If the player does not destroy the marked targets on these occasions quickly, the boss can attack the player more often, making gameplay tougher. Upon defeating the Gigantobot, the player then proceeds continuing their mission to defeat Zurg. Additionally throughout the game, some hostile enemies can also blend in with other enemies or obstacles which the ship is passing through, making the battle a bit more difficult. The last part of online mode deals with the player facing off against Zurg's ship where Zurg (also with pre-recorded dialogues) via navigator attempts to stop the player from interfering with his plans where the legs are marked with arrows which the player must shoot before Zurg escapes. Throughout the battle, the player must dodge the projectiles fired by Zurg's ship while dealing with the legs on his ship. The dangers not only include the projectiles but the legs on Zurg's ship also attack the player, which the player must also stay away from its path where it can strike the players when dealing with Zurg. Defeating Zurg automatically ends the game, taking the player to the results screen depending on how much score they earned during gameplay.
The number of points earned in online mode depends on how many enemies the player has defeated as well as the combos they receive, how many Green Squadron members they have rescued, and the batteries they have collected from Batterybots - regardless if they play in co-op mode or not as seen via leaderboard. Awards were also given to the player depending on how well they performed in online mode.
Training Mode[]
The mode where players can help train themselves to get a high score to help defeat tougher opponents. Training mode provides a stress-free gameplay compared to online mode where players compete with players online at the Disneyland Resort while dealing with tougher enemies. This mode is the only one to be accessible due to the online services shut down at an unknown date.
