Wonder Woman (Volume 5) #12 is an issue of the series Wonder Woman (Volume 5) with a cover date of February, 2017. It was published on December 14, 2016.
Synopsis for "Year One, Part Five"
Etta and Barbara are discussing with Commander Michaelis about the fact that thanks to Diana, for the first time they have agents of the SEAR Group in custody, a thing never happened before. Meanwhile, Steve is testing the powers of Diana, seeing her lift a tank and talk to animals. When Steve tells Diana she must be thrilled about showing her powers to the Amazons of Themyscira, Diana tells him that accepting to come to the world of men meant also renouncing forever to get back to Paradise Island, a thing Trevor did not understand while there, as he could not speak the language of the Amazons. Steve feels guilty for it, but Diana tells him to not do it. They also talk about Diana's mother and Diana's love interest, Kasia.
Back in the base, Commander Michaelis accepted to let Diana have a conversation with the prisoners, who said nothing but his will shall not be denied to them. Thanks to the Lasso of Truth, Diana discovers that the terrorists have been infected with a bio-chemical agent called Maru Virus: this agent practically pushes human being to kill, empowering the part of the brain who desires violence, and makes the infected die if it tries to resist. Diana is horrified by this implication and cannot understand why people bring war where there is peace. Barbara, trying to explain her what it means, also talks about the SEAR Group's symbol, the withered dark tree, and Diana tells them it's the same tree that manifested out of nowhere in Themyscira.
Barbara also wants to have a private chat with Diana: she tells her that SEAR never made that much of a sense in English, but due to the fact that now it is debatable to say the Gods of Olympus do not exist, Barbara suspects that maybe the SEAR word in English stands for a name of a Greek god in Diana's language, the god of War, Ares. Diana tells her that Ares, even if father of the Amazons, is not one of her people's patron, as his ways of war and violence are not supported by the proud people of Themyscira. While she tells her this, Ares himself, actually his sons Phobos and Deimos in disguise, destroys the base holding Steve by the neck, acknowledging Diana and telling her he waited eons to meet her.
