Synopsis for "Chapter Four: Screams From the Past"
At Metropolis, Siobhan Smythe is enjoying a nice, happy morning from the comfort of her apartment. While she is telling her boyfriend, a Daily Planet employee, to get ready for work, a stranger knocks on her door. It's Graft and his assistants, the Pharmhands, and they are interested in Siobhan's powers for a specific job. Having turned her life around and knowing that Graft can't be trusted, Siobhan turns into the Silver Banshee and attempts to scream, but Graft uses a special gauntlet, equipped with shards of different kinds of Kryptonite, to turn her back into human form. He explains that mixing up the effects of different kinds of Kryptonite can have interesting results for metahumans and tells Siobhan to do as he tells her, or he will kill everyone she loves.
Meanwhile, at the courtyard of Stryker's Island, Lex is trying to read a book until some rude inmates start annoying him with their comments about how Superman could easily take over the world but instead chooses to be a Boy Scout, all the while taking about how cooler and more impressive Batman is by comparison. Lex grabs an acorn, takes off one of its nuts and throws into the mouths of the inmates, causing him to have an allergic reaction.
Sometime later, Lex has been taken to his cell and has a private conversation with Superman, who is not happy that Lex almost killed a man just for being rude and doesn't think Lex has changed for the better. Lex doesn't think his sentence will be reduced for good behavior, but still insists that he wants to help Superman, reminding him that, in the weeks they have worked together, they have established peace between two warring kingdoms, retrieved the lost sword of Imperiex and even had a microscopic adventure with the Atoms. Even so, Superman doesn't trust Lex because he feels that Lex hasn't been entirely honest with him, so he asks Lex about who Pharm and Graft are.
Lex doesn't believe Superman is ready for the truth, but Superman insists to know the truth. If Pharm and Graft really are as dangerous as Lex claims they are, then Lex needs to prove they really need to work together. Lex reluctantly agrees and explains that before Superman arrived at Metropolis, Lex himself attempted to be a hero to the downtrodden masses. He noticed that Pharm and Graft, already brilliant scientists by the time Lex had first arrived at Metropolis, were conducting illegal experiments on homeless people they had kidnapped from the streets. Lex raided one of their bases and saved as many victims as he could, but Pharm and Graft escaped.
Even after Lex finishes his tale, Superman thinks he is lying and demands to know where this secret lab is and Lex guides him to the place where the lab used to be: a labyrinth of abandoned tunnels deep beneath the streets of Metropolis. According to Lex, it's been years since these tunnels were last explored and Superman finds entire buildings located within the tunnels. He realizes the city has been destroyed and rebuilt so many times that these ruins are basically a graveyard.
Superman arrives at the lab's old location and finds plans for a Phantom Zone projector, causing Lex to realize that Pharm and Graft set up a trap for Superman after the Parasite failed to kill him. They have must have known that Superman would talk to Lex after the Parasite's rampage and that's why they have sent Silver Bansee, who reluctantly attacks Superman with wraiths from the Phantom Zone.
Back in the surface, Lois sneaks out of the Daily Planet to buy a cup of coffee, while Jimmy talks to her about what he found about Marilyn Moonlight. Suddenly, the fight between Superman and Silver Banshee reaches the surface and Superman asks Silver Banshee to stop fighting and instead come to Supercorp so she can get help. Jimmy attempts to stop the fight all by himself, revealing Silver Banshee to be his girlfriend.
