Synopsis for "The Many Deaths of Doomsday"

At the End of Time Superman and the Time Trapper, the two last living beings in the universe, argue about what must be done. The Time Trapper says that someone must die but Superman insists that killing is never the answer. The Time Trapper teleports away into the past, saying that if Superman refuses to do what is necessary, they will find someone who will.

On Earth in the 21st Century, a few weeks after the events of Absolute Power, Jimmy Olsen shows Lois Lane a series of potential front page photos, but she tells him the only picture she is interested in is one of Metropolis' new hero Superwoman. Suddenly, there is an explosion across the city and Lois runs off, saying she has a lot of meetings to get to. She ducks into a broom closet and finds Clark already there. They both strip off their clothes to the costumes underneath, revealing that Lois is Superwoman, having recently gained powers similar to Superman's. They fly to the site of the explosion, and find Atomic Skull with a band of mutated zoo animals. The super-couple engage Atomic Skull, while scientists at Supercorp constantly monitor their power levels and condition. Mercy Graves notices Lena Luthor is away from her post and angrily calls her to get back to work. Lena, who has been showing her father recordings of his old fights with Superman in the hopes of triggering his memories, runs back to her station; and Lex decides to go for a walk in the city.

As Superman and Lois are flying back to the Daily Planet, they hear screams from the street below and swoop down. To their horror, they see that Doomsday has returned, wreathed in hellfire. Lois momentarily freezes, remembering Clark's death at Doomsday's hands, but then squares off against Doomsday and refuses to leave when Clark tells her to get to safety. Doomsday charges at them, but then freezes in place. Clark looks around and sees that everything, including Lois, is frozen and realises time has stopped. The Time Trapper appears behind him and says that what happens next will define everything. The Time Trapper pulls back their hood to reveal that they are Doomsday, and says they need Superman's help.

Notes

  • This issue carries the legacy numbering Superman #862.
  • This issue takes place several weeks after the events of Absolute Power #4.
    • In the intervening period, Lois Lane has gained Kryptonian-like superpowers and is currently acting as the hero Superwoman. This is likely a result of the mass theft and redistribution of superpowers during Absolute Power.
    • Jimmy mentions that Supergirl has left Metropolis which is a reference to Supergirl's backup stories from Action Comics #1070–1081 that are implied to take place after this storyline.
  • This incarnation of Time Trapper is revealed to be Doomsday. However as the Time Trapper's history is constantly in flux, Doomsday is merely the latest of several people revealed as their "true identity".

Trivia

  • One of the Daily Planet staff members is modelled after Dan Mora and wears a Superbat shirt. A Superbat toy also makes a cameo in the same page.
