Dark Raven, also known as Doctor Hate, was the demonic half of Raven's soul which was freed from the soul gem and become an independent being.
History
After the Titans battle with Neron, Raven sensed that a part of her went missing.[1] It was later revealed that Neron freed her demonic half from the soul gem as a last-ditch effort to hurt her when he was defeated.[2] This independent aspect of her[3] would make a deal with Amanda Waller to be empowered as Doctor Hate using the Nightmare Stone and the Helmet of Hate (which she had her operatives retrieve during the Lazarus Planet and Insomnia's nightmarish assault on Earth) to further the cause of Chaos in exchange for her assistance in Waller's schemes.[4][5][6]
Later, Waller had Doctor Hate repress Beast Boy's mind when he took on the form of the psychic alien conqueror Starro in a bid to save the planet, to give his bestial nature control and driving him to spread mutagenic spores across the world.[7]
During the Beast World event, Hate attempted to destroy "The Kingdom", a nexus between the Elemental Parliaments. She was defeated by an alliance of Black superheroes and the villain Black Manta.[6]
As part of her ongoing plan to become the de-facto dictator of the United States, Waller "saved" the world from the beast plague by teleporting Chester Runk inside Beast Boy, destroying his brain with Runk's black hole.[8] Raven and Nightwing broke into the Bureau of Sovereignty and confronted Waller. Doctor Hate attacked her counterpart and revealed her true identity.[3]
Raven teleported Nightwing away and the two of them battled across the world. During the fight Hate threw Raven into a crowd of Beast-People but they did not attack her, as they each contained a small fragment of Beast Boy. Even though the heroes managed to turn the tide and rescue the Beast-People, Doctor Hate was still determined to kill Raven. However, Starfire swooped in to save her friend and ripped the Helmet of Hate off her, which The Flash then destroyed by dropping in a volcano.
With the helm destroyed, Raven told her friends to leave so she could face Doctor Hate in a fair fight. She reconstituted the soul gem and attempted to trap Hate in it again. However, Doctor Hate defeated her and trapped Raven in the gem instead, then assumed her identity.[9]
Dark Raven went on to trap her half-brothers Trilogy, Suge and Belial in soul gems, constructing a "Crown of Cages" which vastly increased her powers. Finally, she even managed to trap The Spectre and assumed her true form as the "Dark Winged Queen". Trigon manifested on Earth and Nightwing called for every hero on Earth to respond.[10]
Nightwing sent out an emergency broadcast, calling on every hero on Earth to help.[11] Waves of heroes arrived and Trigon battled them, easily defeating them all. However, the Dark Winged Queen simply watched. At Beast Boy's direction, Tempest destroyed the central gem in the "Crown of Cages" which held Raven, freeing her. Raven squared off with her counterpart, but Beast Boy asked her to put the three of them in a psychic link. He pointed out that Dark Raven had not actually harmed anyone since losing the Helmet of Hate, and that she had the ability to choose who she wanted to be rather than accept the "destiny" Trigon had planned for her. Raven and Dark Raven fused together into a single entity, and Raven harnessed the full power of the Titans to defeat Trigon and banish him back to Hell.[12]
