Clifford DeVoe (Prime Earth)

The Thinker is a criminal from Keystone City that uses his impressive Thinking Cap to enhance his intelligence. He acted as an enemy of the original Flash Jay Garrick.

History

Flexible Timeline

Before the timeline was shifted by Doctor Manhattan, Clifford DeVoe was the original Thinker and fought the original Flash Jay Garrick. However, because Manhattan had made it so the Justice Society never formed and Jay was forgotten, Clifford's exploits, too, were erased from history.

For a time, a different Thinker opposed the Suicide Squad in the present day and was thought to be the original.

However, when Doctor Manhattan reset the changes he had made, Garrick and DeVoe's battles were restored to the timeline.

At some point, an artificial intelligence was created based on DeVoe's personality, which would gain a sentience of its own and oppose the current Flash. ^[1]

Present

In the present, DeVoe was still an active criminal, specializing in selling knockoffs of the Rogues' signature weapons. At one point, he was stopped by the current Flash.

However, later, DeVoe returned to selling weapons, one of which was used to frame Captain Cold for murder before Barry Allen solved the mystery. ^[2]

• The Thinker was created by Gardner Fox and Everett E. Hibbard, first appearing in All-Flash #12. However, in the Prime Earth continuity, The Thinker first appeared as part of the New 52 DC Universe in Harley Quinn's Villain of the Year #1 by Mark Russell and Mike Norton.
