Synopsis for "The Origin of Bruce Wayne"
Matthew Warner, a young boy, returns home with his butler, Mr. Taylor, only to find his parents brutally murdered. Soon after, Bruce Wayne visits Matthew, and the two bond over their shared grief of losing their parents at a young age. Meanwhile, in Arkham Asylum, Victor Zsasz sits in his cell, cutting his arm with a letter. Batman and Jim Gordon discuss the possibility that Zsasz may be responsible for the Warner murders, as the pattern of wounds matches Zsasz’s typical method: the mother was stabbed 37 times and the father 73 times.
Investigating further, Batman examines the letter Zsasz was using and notices many of its sentences are anadromes—phrases that form different meanings when read backward. This clue leads Batman to discover two additional bodies, later identified as Zsasz’s parents. Despite the grim revelation, Bruce and Matthew discuss the frustration of not knowing who killed Matthew’s parents. When another double homicide is discovered, with the victims’ arms positioned like clock hands, suspicions turn to Two-Face.
However, Batman’s investigation eventually leads him to Mr. Taylor, who confesses his motivation: with the Warners dead, he now controls the family’s fortune. Though the case seems solved, Matthew continues to obsess over Bruce, heaping praise on him, thanking him repeatedly for his help, and constantly expressing his desire to be just like Bruce Wayne.
Later, while dining with Selina Kyle, Bruce reflects on the case and realizes how “childish” it was to initially suspect notorious villains like Zsasz and Two-Face. His suspicions lead him back to Matthew Warner. Confronting the boy at his parents’ grave, Batman discovers that Matthew has scratched out his parents’ names on the tombstone and inscribed the names of Thomas and Martha Wayne beneath them. Disturbingly, he has also carved their names into his own cheeks.
It is revealed that Matthew admired Bruce Wayne so deeply and wanted to become him so much that he ordered his butler to murder his own parents. When Batman tells him, “You’re a sick kid with dead parents,” Matthew chillingly responds, “Yes… but what else is Bruce Wayne?”
