The Evil Eye (邪視 Jashi?) is a yokai who has spent years bound to the Tsuchinoko sacrificial house. After possessing Jiji, the Evil Eye made it his goal to kill all humans he comes across. However, after becoming friends with Okarun through an exchange of fights, the Evil Eye makes a deal with him to only target him, thereby reducing his threat to the main cast.

In Dandadan, the Evil Eye serves as one of the primary antagonists during the Cursed House Arc and the primary antagonist in the Evil Eye Arc. He has since become a major supporting character throughout the series.

Appearance[]

The Evil Eye is a large, tall and lanky male with a bowl haircut and a defining evil grin expression. As for attire, the Evil Eye wears nothing but underwear. As a spirit, the Evil Eye appeared the same as when he was alive, albeit with a healthier body. Upon failing to save a boy that was sacrificed by the Kito family, the Evil Eye adopted the boy's characteristics out of anger, thus lending to his current appearance.

As a human (during the remainder of his lifetime), the Evil Eye was an emaciated child, due to his imprisoners depriving him of food and water, with short hair and wore a dirty, ragged robe. Upon being sacrificed by the Kito Family, the Evil Eye wore nothing but a fundoshi.

When possessing Jiji's body, the Evil Eye causes the young man's hair to turn white, a ripple pattern third eye to appear at the center of his forehead, along with his other eyes changing to become yellow, and a dark marking to reach down his shoulders and frame his face. The possession also has an effect on Jiji's earrings, causing them to lengthen. Initially, the Evil Eye's possession impacted Jiji's wardrobe, leading to the destruction of all his clothes except for his underwear. This soon ceased after the Evil Eye gave Okarun his briefs.

Personality[]

During the time he was alive, the Evil Eye was a hopeful child who had wished to play with the children he saw through the window from his prison. He was also shown to be empathetic, as he desperately tried to help a boy who was going to be used as a sacrifice just like he was a long time ago. After failing to save the child, however, the Evil Evil's personality took a darker turn, now becoming a resentful spirit with a desire to every human in his track.

After taking over Jiji's body, the Evil Eye is given the opportunity to act on his desires, presenting himself as being murderous, aggressive, and sadistic towards all humans, as well as anything else that might get in his way. He enjoys fighting, especially when up against those who have proven themselves capable of keeping up with him, and takes them seriously by wasting no effort on his opponent. He also hates it when his opponents try to retreat from him. As a yokai, the Evil Eye believes that it is disgraceful to see his own kind affiliate with the race he seeks to punish, as he did not think so highly of the Turbo Granny accompany Momo, thinking that she was her slave, and expressed his disapproval of Okarun defending Momo after mistaking him to be a yokai in his transformation.

Following the Evil Eye's confinement inside of Jiji, Okarun puts the Evil Eye's behavior into perspective, revealing that the yokai is no different from a newborn child that only has a desire to play and have fun, referring all the way back to his dying wish to play with the children he saw from his prison. However, presumably due to this desire being mixed with his victimization to the dark side of humanity, the Evil Eye has a misconceived notion that the act of killing humans is the same as playing with them and is therefore unaware of what constitutes as being right and wrong. As such, the Evil Eye has a childlike personality. While attending Jiji's school for the first time, with Momo as his chaperone, the Evil Eye acted rather loud and impulsive in class and displayed bad table manners during lunch by preferring to eat his food with his hands instead of using chopsticks as Momo instructed. Along with losing himself to play, he is also shown to be very impatient, as he desperately asked for Okarun to continue with their second battle after the human stopped using his transformation.

Background[]

When he was alive, the Evil Eye was a young boy who was chosen by the Kito Family to be a sacrifice for the Tsuchinoko in order to prevent his village from being destroyed by the eruption of its volcano. While suffering from malnourishment as time passed by in his imprisonment, the boy at one point watched from his cage as children were happily playing outside and desired up until his death to play along with them if just once.

After many years past since the sacrifice was made, the boy reappears in the living world as a spirit at the same place he was imprisoned, which has now been reconstructed into a sacrificial house by the Kito Family. As the family who were living there were having dinner, the boy becomes visible to the son and causes him to become frightened to see that a ghost had suddenly appeared, leading to the boy to try and interact with the son by dancing. When the time came for the son to be sacrificed by the Kito Family, after his parents committed suicide by hanging themselves, the boy desperately tries to help free him from his confinement but fails due to not having a physical body. Enraged by the Kito Family subjecting the child to the same involuntary sacrifice as he was when he was alive, the boy swore vengeance on them and would then go on to become known as the Evil Eye, an evil spirit who would curse others into committing suicide. As more sacrifices were being made over the years, the Evil Eye's hatred towards the Kito Family began to expand towards humanity as well and sought to eliminate all humans off the face of the Earth.

Synopsis[]

Cursed House Arc[]

After the Enjoji Family moves into the sacrificial house, the Evil Eye becomes visible to their son, Jin Enjoji, and makes him feel haunted by his constant appearance after the yokai becomes eager to possess him for his spiritual powers. However, his desire is put on hold after Jiji temporarily moves in with his childhood friend Momo and grandmother Seiko after his parents become hospitalize by the Tsuchinoko's psychic influence.

Evil Eye possessing Jiji

The Evil Eye possessing Jiji's body.

Wanting to rid his house of the spirit haunting him and his family, Jiji receives help from Momo and her friend Okarun to exorcise the house, which leads to them being involved with the Kito Family making sacrifices to the Tsuchinoko underground. After Jiji, Momo, Okarun, and the Turbo Granny are confronted by the Tsuchinoko inside the pit, the Evil Eye makes his appearance and cancels out the worm's suicidal influence on Momo and Okarun by using his powers. He then interacts with Jiji by sharing with him his origin, causing him to feel pity for the yokai as he heads down to the lower level where his corpse is located. Before doing anything further after arriving with Momo and the Turbo Granny, Jiji becomes electrocuted by the Tsuchinoko and falls unconscious, resulting in him coming face-to-face with the Evil Eye during his imprisonment in a dream and having the chance to tell him how sorry he was for not fully understanding him the first they met. The Evil Eye then responds backs by telling Jiji that he wishes to play together, to which Jiji happily complies with him. As a result of his cooperation, the Evil Eye manages to successfully possess Jiji's body, stop the Tsuchinoko on time from swallowing both him, Momo and the Turbo Granny, and states his intentions to kill all humans.

Okarun and Evil Eye clash

The Evil Eye clashing with Okarun.

Noticing Momo near, the Evil Eye kicks her back towards the wall and questions the Turbo Granny if she was Momo's slave, much to the yokai dolls anger. He then hears Momo calling out for Jiji to come back to his senses as he holds her down, only for the spirit to tell her that Jiji's body now belongs to him and that he is prepared to show her true hell. Sensing the Tsuchinoko about to interfere by unleashing its electrokinesis, the Evil Eye shields himself and Momo with a house construct made out of the grudges of those were sacrificed by the Kito Family and attacks the Tsuchinoko by forming the grudges into a ball and kicking it towards the worm, causing it to retreat after taking too much damage. The Evil Eye then brings his attention back to Momo and continues to attack her. As he prepares to kick a grudge ball towards her, the Evil Eye finds his attack blocked by Okarun, who becomes furious with him for hurting Momo, and tries to stop him from retreating to the upper level with her. After catching up to Okarun by the time he helps Momo reach the surface, the Evil Eye tells him that he will be the first die.

The Evil Eye defeated

The Evil Eye defeated by Okarun.

The Evil Eye overpowers Okarun as they battle throughout the pit and prepares to end the fight quickly due to the Tsuchinoko's poisonous spore affecting Jiji's body. Using the grudges, the Evil Eye traps Okarun inside his Cursed House to keep him from moving around and enters to deliver a barrage of punches to his opponent. As he takes great pleasure in beating him into submission, the Evil Eye tells Okarun that he plans to torture Momo after he finishes him off. Having said this, the Evil Eye angers Okarun and is defeated after the human strikes him with a barrage of squat punches, while at the same time, being told the three things he has done that are unforgivable.

Evil Eye inside Taro

The Evil Eye being confined within Taro.

Later, after regaining conscious from his defeat, the Evil Eye escapes from the pit and reaches the forest to damage the Tsuchinoko's corpse, as it was being used by Momo to hose down the magma released by the village volcano, and attacks the Kito Family. The Evil Eye is then left to face Momo, Naki, and Manjiro as they try to stop his assault but proves to be too much for them to handle. As he comes to attack Momo, the Evil Eye is suddenly attacked by the Dover Demon and is switched to fighting against Seiko and Taro after they descend from the Dover Demon's spacecraft. After Taro disassembles his body, which contain talismans inside, the Evil Eye is kept confined inside the anatomical model once he puts himself back together around Jiji's body.

At the Ayase residence, the Evil Eye faces an exorcism performed by Momo, Seiko and Manjiro to force the yokai out of Jiji but proves to be resistant to their attempt as he continues to remain active inside of Taro, stating to them that their efforts were futile. Shortly after, the Evil Eye's possession of Jiji's body becomes undone after Taro eats a piece of the oden served, which leads to Seiko figuring out, by splashing Jiji with different temperature liquids, that Jiji can only return to normal by coming into contact with hot liquid while the Evil Eye will manifest if Jiji comes into with cold liquids. With this realized, Seiko assigns everyone to watch over Jiji while carrying around hot thermos to make sure that the Evil Eye does not manifest until the next exorcism.

Evil Eye Arc

The Evil Eye going berserk at the Ayase residence.

On the day that Okarun and Aira agree to temporarily move into the Ayase residence, the Evil Eye awakens during dinner after Jiji comes into contact with a drop of soy sauce and reacts by flipping the dinner table. Later, the Evil Eye once again manifests after Jiji accidently washes his hands with cold water but is soon suppressed by Momo with help from Okarun, Seiko, and Aira. Following Jiji's decision to cancel the exorcism due to wanting to befriend the Evil Eye, which his friends agreed to give their support, the Evil Eye awakens after it suddenly starts to rain and makes its first attack on Okarun.

The next day, the Evil Eye awakens after Jiji accidently gets splashed by Aira's cold beverage and targets Momo inside his Cursed House where he prevents her from splashing him with the hot water thermos and from using her powers to push him away. However, having drank some hot water prior to the Evil Eye's release, Momo returns Jiji back to normal after spitting out the hot water in her mouth.

Okarun vs the Evil Eye - Second Round

The Evil Eye faces Okarun a second time.

After receiving training from the Turbo Granny, the Evil Eye is purposedly awakened by Okarun to engage him in a rematch. The Evil Eye makes the first attack by sending out multiple grudge balls aimed towards Okarun from all directions, however, due to Okarun's newfound sense of rhythm to avoid attacks, the Evil Eye becomes unable to land a single hit on him and continuously receives every one of his attacks. After standing back up from Okarun's full body All-Out attack, which consequently has him revert back to his normal state, the Evil Eye becomes pleased by Okarun's performance in battle and begs for him to transform again so that they may continue. Okarun gives his refusal, telling the Evil Eye that he views him as being weak and will only fight him once he has gotten stronger. Though the Evil Eye objects to Okarun's claim, he agrees to his deal to become strong enough to face him next time. Okarun then has the deal set with conditions, telling the Evil Eye that he will only agree to fight him on a weekly basics if he agrees to not target anyone else other than him. The Evil Eye agrees to the terms and gives Okarun his underwear, informing him that the briefs are refusing to comply. With the deal made, the Evil Eye suppresses himself inside of Jiji until the next time they battle.

Abilities and Powers[]

Yokai Abilities[]

Curse [v · e]
The Evil Eye is known to possess the curse ability to force people into committing suicide with its evil gaze.
Memory Sharing
Along with cursing humans with its gaze, the Evil Eye can also choose to share his memories with others after making eye contact with them, as he had Jiji look into his past.
Possession
As a yokai, the Evil Eye is capable of possessing humans to use as a vessel.

Jiji's Body[]

Physical Prowess[]

Enhanced Strength: Complimented by Jiji's athletic build, the Evil Eye possesses incredible physical strength to shatter surfaces and send normal size people flying backwards with his bare hands and legs. With a single kick, the Evil Eye can launch his grudge balls with great velocity that they are capable of piercing the Tsuchinoko's body. In his fight against Momo, Manjiro, and Naki, the Evil Eye was strong enough to break Naki's arm with a dropkick. The Evil Eye was also strong enough to completely obliterate the Ta Komeshi exosuit into pieces with a single punch while fighting Okarun and then he proceeds to decimate a group aliens in the process.

Enhanced Speed and Reflexes: The Evil Eye possesses remarkable speed, reflexes, and agility, being able to keep up with Okarun in his Turbo Granny form that has him reach top speed of about 100 km/hr. According to the Turbo Granny's rhythm analysis, the renown speedy yokai determined that the Evil Eye is capable of performing four different actions in the time it takes for him to jump and land on the ground once. Upon tracking down the Kito Family, the Evil Eye instantly took out four of the five members present, along with Manjiro, in a single rush attack. He was able to dodge a barrage of Seiko's bat swings for a short amount of time and reacted on time to jump up out of the way of a swift swing aimed towards his right leg from which he was standing on.

Enhanced Durability: The Evil Eye is given incredibly resilience when possessing Jiji's body. Despite being knocked out by Okarun in their first fight, the Evil Eye was able to recover in just a few minutes with no lasting damage and reach Momo, the Kito Family, and Manjiro from the Tsuchinoko's pit. After receiving a surprise kick to the face by Manjiro, the Evil Eye felt nothing from the attack and merely returned the favor. Furthermore, he was sturdy enough to take on hits from Seiko's bat that was swung with enough force to create craters on the ground. Most notably, the Evil Eye could withstand Naki's and Mr. Shrimp's attacks, combatants who are incredibly strong enough to completely destroy walls and send others flying back.

Skill Set[]

Skilled Hand-to-Hand Combatant: The Evil Eye is a very formidable fighter, being skilled enough to hold his own against strong opponents, even when outnumbered.

Possession Abilities[]

Grudge Construction [v · e]

After possessing Jiji and gaining his incredible spiritual power, the Evil Eye becomes capable of summoning the grudges of those who were sacrificed by the Kito Family. Once summoned, the Evil Eye can shape them into anything he wishes. These grudges when shaped become solid and resilient constructs that affect anything in the living world.

Cursed House
(呪いの家 Noroi no ie?)
Cursed House
The Evil Eye is able to use the grudges to construct a house-shaped dome around himself to protect against attacks. The Evil Eye refers to this dome as his Cursed House (呪いの家 Noroi no ie?).
Strengths and Weaknesses
Momo confronted by the Evil Eye

The Cursed House being used to trap Momo inside with the Evil Eye, while also preventing Okarun from breaking in from the other side.

Acting as a barrier, the Cursed House mainly serves as a defense. The size of the house can be freely manipulated by the Evil Eye to fit other people if he chooses to confine them with him. He can also remotely imprison his enemies inside the Cursed House once he has sent the grudges towards his opponent and can phase through the house to enter. By his own accord, the Cursed House is said to be both impenetrable and inescapable due to the grudges "rejecting" everything around, as shown when it repelled and burned Seiko's hand after she attempted to break through the barrier with a talisman and Okarun trying to break free in his Turbo-Granny form.

While the Cursed House is very resilient, it has been proven that devastating sheer force is capable of destroying it, as Okarun was capable of launching the Evil Eye out of it after building up enough power for a final attack in his Turbo-Granny form. This also implies that only strength equal to that of a yokai's, or the Evil Eye's, is capable of breaking through the barrier. When confining both himself and his opponent to attack them up close, the Evil Eye is liable to have the tables turn on him if his opponent sees his attacks coming and find an opening to strike back.

Usage

The Evil Eye uses his Cursed House for two purposes: to shield himself from outside forces or to imprison his enemies. In addition to the latter, the Evil Eye can face his opponent up close inside the house and be given the liberty to viciously attack them while they are prevented from effectively dodging due to the limited amount of space they are allowed to move in. If finding himself somehow prevented from reaching his target inside, the Evil Eye can further shrink the size of the house to correct this, as he did with Momo after she used her psychic powers to push him away from her.

Grudge Ball
Grudge Ball
The Evil Eye can have the grudges compress into a small ball and have it launch with a strong kick like a soccer ball.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Grudge ball bouncing

A grudge ball homing in on the Tsuchinoko.

The main strength of the grudge ball is that it will ricochet off a solid surface and redirect back to the Evil Eye's intended target after striking them, or if the enemy manages to dodge the hit, to land another strike. This attack is shown to effectively barrage the enemy, as the grudge ball will continue to lock on to the target like a homing missile and assault them from all directions without losing its momentum until the Evil Eye calls back for it. This also makes it difficult for enemies to fight the Evil Eye in close combat. When not in use, the ball is shown to float beside the Evil Eye to remain on standby. Whether these actions are due to the Evil Eye's control or the ball having a mind of its own is unclear. The ball can also make contact with things that are intangible, such as Momo's psychic hands. The Evil Eye is also shown capable of sending out multiple grudge balls by striking the initial ball with a single punch. With more than one grudge ball bouncing around the area, this attack makes it even more difficult for the Evil Eye's opponent to defend against or avoid while they are forced to face off against the yokai up close.

So far, the only known ways to counter the Evil Eye's grudge ball is if an opponent manages to stop its pre-launch with strength comparable or greater to the Evil Eye's or if they were to have great speed and reflexes to continuously dodge it while in flight.

Usage
Evil Eye fighting Okarun

The Evil Eye fighting in conjunction with his grudge ball.

The Evil Eye uses the grudge ball for offensive purposes. While engaging in close quarters combat, the Evil Eye will have his grudge ball actively bounce around as it locks onto his opponent to strike them, effectively causing complications for the enemy as the Evil Eye has them too focused on fighting him to worry about the grudge ball homing in on them.

Trivia[]

  • Evil Eye is a supernatural belief in a curse brought about by a malevolent glare, usually inspired by envy. It is found in many cultures in the Mediterranean region, the Balkans, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, South Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America, with such cultures often believing that receiving the evil eye will cause misfortune or injury, while others believe it to be a kind of supernatural force that casts or reflects a malevolent gaze back upon those who wish harm upon others (especially innocents).
  • The Evil Eye's profile in Volume 6, it's said that he's based on 2 yokai: the Yamanoke, a mysterious and terrifying entity encountered in the mountains, and the Kunekune, a slender, white humanoid shape resembling paper or fabric.
  • The Evil Eye's initial appearance - that being a pale, tall and skinny man with a twisted face and long arms and fingernails - as well as his wish to play with children may be a reference to the entity featured in Aphex Twin's Come to Daddy music video.
  • A possible inspiration for Evil Eye is the Ochonan from the horror manga Fuan no Tane. Ochonan is a creepy good friend to all children who has protected several generations of his adopted family, but likes to keep out of sight, and their drawings of his vertical eyes and mouth tend to disturb adults who never met him.
