(CC BY-NC-SA 2.0) is not a valid license for Wikimedia commons, I had to delete this picture.

Groetjes --Neozoon (talk) 22:06, 21 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

 • So I saw! I'm really puzzled, thought I'd followed the instructions exactly, maybe you can help me understand? License is Creative Commons License Deed Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0 Generic (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0), which part of that is incompatible with this wiki? I mean, this isn't commercial here, is it? Anyway, I'd better go and delete it from where I'd used it ... Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 22:15, 21 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Per our policy all uploads have to be free also for commercial use, at least in regard to copyright. Images uploaded to Commons are not only for use on Wikipedia, but can be used by anybody for any purpose. Of course, personality rights may also restrict commercial use, but that doesn't matter here. --Túrelio (talk) 08:14, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hello, I already wrote everything in the image description. In particular, I pinged the authors to make them explicitly specify the license, and I also think I added the necessary tags. What's missing? -- dapal(msg) 23:17, 30 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

In the meanwhile, I reverted the change. I'd invite you to use the image talk page if you believe there are still unresolved issues. Thank you! --dapal(msg) 07:52, 31 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Dapal, what is missing is the documented permission of the copyright owner. You could have arranged for that to be sent to OTRS rather than reverting my edit. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 10:29, 31 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
... which I see is now on the source page. Apologies, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 10:42, 31 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Licensing

[edit]

Greetings! In the OTRS ticket for this file, could you please confirm whether the Flickr uploader claims to be the copyright holder? I think there may be some Flickrwashing, as the uploader indicates that the file was "taken on October 27, 2007" [1], yet it is clearly decades older. It may be a government work since its contents are the same as a 1958 Pathé file [2]. Please advise. Kind Regards-- Soupforone (talk) 16:23, 25 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I followed the correct procure and credited the Flickr account for the images on the upload wizard. Not sure how I am in violation of copyright. Makro (talk) 19:59, 2 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You can only upload files that are suitably licenced. If a file is clearly marked "© All rights reserved" that means that the copyright owner does not wish to release the image and that uploading it here is a copyright violation. That's why I've nominated them for speedy deletion. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:55, 2 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I must have missed that. Thanks for the help understanding.Makro (talk) 12:42, 3 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's a minefield, Makro. There are a lot of images on the internet, but only a tiny proportion of them have a licence that would allow them to be uploaded here. You can see which licences are permitted at Commons:Licensing. If in doubt, you can always ask at the Commons:Help desk – people there are helpful, though it isn't always entirely easy to understand what they tell you, which can be quite technical. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 15:36, 3 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Cropping images

[edit]

By way of information for the future, when you want to crop an image, as you did with File:Paul Smith, cropped.jpg I suggest you use the CropTool that can be activated in your commons Preferences, under Gadgets. The CropTool will then appears in the left side of your screen. It saves everyone a lot of time because it transfers all the correct and appropriate information into the cropped image, such as source, license, author, etc. It even leaves a backlink to the original and visa versa so long as the original has been previously positively reviewed. That way all the proper information is there and does not need to be manually reviewed by volunteers. If you are just cropping a small bit of the image like a frame you can decide to overwrite the original image but for more major crops you should upload the cropped version as a separate new image, but you have a choice. I hope you can see how everyone can save time and frustration by using CropTool. Good luck. Ww2censor (talk) 22:47, 9 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Ww2censor, I never thanked you for this tip. Crop Tool is fine until you need to rotate something – in my case, most recently this, which needed 9.5° rotation before cropping. So I did it in Photoshop, and thus had to try to manually add the data. Inevitably I screwed up (WHY isn't Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 Generic an available licence option for uploading?). Two questions, if you have the time: how do I fix that upload? and is there a tool that rotates as well as cropping? Thanks, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:46, 28 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like I have been a goat :(

[edit]

Thanks so much for your prompt feedback. I understand that as an organization, Wikipedia must be seen not to have any violations or potential violations. It has been a bit of a steep learning curve trying to add suitable information and I really appreciate the time you have taken. I will try to contact willing members through the tearoom before posting. Thank you once again.

Spt.08 (talk) 04:45, 21 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Well, Spt.08, actually I rather like goats ... and I know it's hard to get started. I'm always willing to answer questions (or at least, to try to) if there are things you aren't sure about. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 18:07, 22 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I totally appreciate all the time you have taken and your constructive advice - it is really kind of you. I think I had got the wrong impression from reading other bios where they had just copied, paraphrased and or included promo material - funny what you find. I have gone back and re-written in my own words the content and included references. I believe the character is the same - to avoid being contentious and to also cover what I think is relevant content for this type of bio - but I don't think it is paraphrased. I don't want to post it on the proper draft page as I have made too many errors and I did not want to add to the aggravation. I was wondering if I could possibly get your input first – I hope you don’t mind. Then, of course, if it is ok as a draft, it would be up to the editing panel.

Margaret Baker-Genovesi

Margaret Baker-Genovesi was an internationally acclaimed Australian lyric soprano. Now retired, she continues in her other roles of educator, mentor, and adjudicator[1][2].

Early Life

[edit]

Singing was an important focus of Australian-born soprano Margaret Baker’s early life. Precocious talent resulted in awards in local eisteddfods and invitations to perform on local radio from the age of 10[3] [4] [5] [6]. She commenced professional vocal training at 18 with Jospeh Hlamos[7][8]and some two years later, Baker had already begun performing as a soloist, with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra[9]. In 1953, she made her operatic debut with the then, Queensland National Opera, (now Opera Queensland) in the role of a young Violetta Valéry, the tragic heroine of Verdi’s La Traviata [10]. That same year, she won the Queensland section of the national Modern Melba Quest and in 1954 Baker was named a Queensland winner of the Australian Broadcasting Commission’s national Concerto and Vocal Competition[11][12].

Personal savings, prize money, private sponsorship[13] and scholarships enabled Baker to fulfil her ambition[14] to go to Italy where she studied at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and then at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana. Under the tuteledge of Annelies Kupper in Munich, Baker furthered her training in the singing of the German language and the art of Lieder interpretation. She also adjusted her surname to Baker-Genovesi on her marriage to the Roman engineer Vittorio Genovesi.

Career

[edit]

During her singing career, as Margaret Baker-Genovesi, she worked with internationally renowned conductors[15][16][17][18][19], and acclaimed European radio and television orchestras. As a soloist she toured internationally from her base in Rome[20], and was a guest artist of notable European festivals. Regarded from her youth as having an affinity for Lieder, Baker-Genovesi also became especially noted for her unique flair in her interpretation of the Italian Art-song[21][22][23].

Baker-Genovesi's European debut, in Rome, as the countess’s maid Susanna in Mozart’s (Le Nozze di Figaro) was followed by international engagements in opera and oratorio. Important operatic roles include: Amina (La sonnambula ); Lucia (Lucia di Lammermoor); Adina (L'elisir d'amore); Marie (La fille du régiment ); Rosina (The Barber of Seville); Isabella (L'Italiana in Algeri ); La Comtesse di Folleville (Il viaggio a Reims); Musetta (La bohème); Violetta (La traviata); Gilda (Rigoletto); the Queen of the Night (The Magic Flute); Kontstanze (Die Entführung aus dem Serail ) and Zerlina (Don Giovanni ).

As an adjudicator, Baker-Genovesi has over 20 years experience as a judge of prestigious singing competitions both in Europe and Australia[24][25][26][27]. Baker-Genovesi has also been in demand internationally as a vocal coach and has lectured and conducted master classes in leading Conservatoria[28][29].

Notable pupils include Desiree Rancatore, Pinti Damiana[30], Stephanie Hampel[31], Angela Nisi[32] and Jason Barry-Smith.

Private Life

[edit]

Baker-Genovesi’s husband died in 1997 and 10 years later, she retired to her native Brisbane. [33].

Wiki Loves Monuments ti aspetta, con centinaia di nuovi comuni fotografabili

[edit]
Concorso Wiki Loves Monuments Italia 2018 (English version)

Grazie, Nemo 16:06, 12 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Notification about possible deletion

[edit]
Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hi Justlettersandnumbers,

I appreciate you flagging the Ron Kitchens photo as a possible copyright violation. I have a letter from the original photography signing off permission for my organization to use this photo as we see fit. Is there a way for me to include this letter? Or, how would I best show that this photo is not a copyright violation? I would appreciate any feedback!

SMFTDunham, your first step – before you make any further edit to any page in any Wikimedia project – is to make a proper paid-editor disclosure as required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use, as you've already been asked to do on your Wikipedia talk-page. Then you can ask the photographer to upload on original version of the file here on Commons, complete with EXIF data, and then to create a release of permission, most easily by using this tool, and send it to OTRS. There's a serious backlog there, so it may not be processed for several months. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 20:16, 27 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have sent an email to 'permissions-commons@wikimedia.org' about the copyright. I took this photo.

This file has been deleted despite my sending the email. I am the owner of this photograph which I took myself. It was originally a slide that has been scanned. Please restore the picture and let me know when you have done so.

This media is missing permission information

[edit]

@Justlettersandnumbers: Could you please let me know how to upload the permission? I might chase the person in the subject to provide one. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Essex PR (talk • contribs) 12:38, 30 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No, sorry, Essex PR, I have no interest in helping paid editors. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 20:09, 30 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Justlettersandnumbers: What made you suggest that I am a paid editor? If I was I would have definitely disclosed it as per Wikimedia rules. Thinking otherwise and assuming that I am a paid editor is not so humane on your part is it?!Essex PR (talk) 10:29, 1 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello, @Justlettersandnumbers: ! You want delete my Images, but I sent you official letter from SPUTNIX Company (Letter №16052019-1 16.05.2019) , it's create and owns this images. The letter permits to use this photos im Wikipedia.

Hi. Coleman was one of the founders of the society, the "XXV della Campagna Romana", of course. But he was not an OBJECT OF the Roman Campagna. I've now categorized him as Category:XXV della campagna romana. The categories applied to the single File:Enrico Coleman portrait.jpg are absolutely redundant, as same categories are applied to global Category:Enrico Coleman, don't you think? --Lalupa (talk) 17:41, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Acroterion, I am mortified, thank you for taking care of this. I suppose I just didn't think anyone would be dumb enough to upload an image with somebody else's watermark on it, and clearly that was pretty dumb of me – I trusted, but did not verify. Mortified, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 11:13, 8 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Benneth Nwankwo

[edit]

Hi there! I see you added No permission since to File:BENNETH NWANKWO.jpg. Would it be appropriate for you to do the same for File:Benneth Nwankwo.jpg, which appears to be the same photo? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 21:13, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, GoingBatty! That's already been done by Marchjuly. Something is surely wrong with that upload – it's watermarked Greatlooee Photography (as is this one from the same shoot), but the EXIF data says "damanis_photography". Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 19:49, 26 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'm building up to doing a biography on a William Perry. By happy accident I found this photo of one of his, er products. So I uploaded it and then I went to categorise it. I found a newspaper item about the animal concerned (here) Then my problem was to choose a category because the newspaper says he's Romney Marsh. Under Romney Marsh I found in Commons only nice pasture but soon found pics of sheep undifferentiated. There is a category for Romney (i.e. one word) which turns out to be sheep. Then after consultation with an expert in the field (so to speak) I found a category New Zealand Romney created by you and I think you might be responsible for the rest of the category structure.

I do not want to rebuild the whole world but I did wonder if perhaps the categorisation of sheep could be reviewed. Right now I will put the lad in the photo under New Zealand Romney but the newspaper item claims hm to be Romney Marsh. My advisor says while there may have been a dozen Romney Marsh brought to NZ they were crossed with many others and that's why we have a New Zealand Romney. I'd like it if things like that were explained at the top of categories (that is assuming my story is correct and that's another reason for contacting you).

It may also be that uploaders are confused by the number of categories available and maybe its categorising that needs to be checked rather than creation of new categories. I would be very grateful if you would give me some guidance on these matters. Thanks, Eddaido (talk) 08:28, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Eddaido. I think Category:New Zealand Romney is indeed the right place for that image, as the New Zealand Romney was established as a separate breed from the British Romney Marsh in 1904. Images of the British breed are in Category:Romney sheep. I'm not responsible for the whole structure, though I have contributed to it, and I split that category at the same time that I created the separate article for the New Zealand breed. As I understand it, the sheep in both countries are almost invariably called simply 'Romney'. The categories are themselves categorised, so to find other sheep breed categories you could check, say, Category:Sheep breeds by name or Category:Sheep breeds originating in New Zealand. Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 10:00, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I ask this in the hope of starting a conversation with you (and anyone else interested) that will lead to a solution which might be acceptable to most editors. Is this list of sheep breeds a sound basis for the construction (or do I mean expansion) of categories?
I should tell you my category building experience has been with many brands of cars, later with horse-drawn vehicles. I hope I haven't gone to sleep on the job there but in recent years there have not been a lot of contributions - so far as I've noticed. Eddaido (talk) 12:20, 9 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Eddaido, sorry, I forgot to reply to this. I see that you want a find a solution, but I don't know what you think the problem might be. I assume that the current system is acceptable to most users or they'd already have changed it. If you want to start a broad conversation I'd suggest somewhere like COM:VP rather than my little-frequented talk-page. Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 10:28, 14 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You

Update:

As per your notice, I have sent the required email. This was posted at the end of the process: "Once you have sent the release email, you're done! A Wikimedia OTRS volunteer will get back to you once your email has been processed (the current backlog is 5 days)."

Thank you for your professional assistance.

Query about deleted file Karestoonegoli

[edit]

Hi, Justlettersandnumbers, I saw your post at User talk:Nazanin1376. Is deleted File:Karestoonegoli.jpg the same as ‎File:Zahra meygoli.jpg? The latter is being discussed at w:en:WP:TEA#Proof of the right of the photographer. Cheers, Pelagic (talk) 13:03, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, Pelagic, but I can't remember what it looked like – and as I don't have admin rights here, I can't look at it. My guess, however, would be a 'no'. Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:22, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

My photos

[edit]

You nominated a number of my photos for deletion although they are MY photos and there is not any problem with the licence. So please undo that and don't bother me with that kind of stuff. You are not the sherif here. Thanks. DFoidl (talk) 21:08, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Well, DFoidl, I asked you here to clarify which of your uploads were actually yours, and you didn't. Anyway, if they're yours it shouldn't be any problem to provide evidence of that. And no, I'm not an administrator on this project. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 07:18, 27 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have to provide evidence for my photos being my photos and I don't see any problem with my uploads. Get some other things to do, that's pathetic. Thanks. DFoidl (talk) 11:42, 27 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Nominating FoP violations for deletion

[edit]

Hi, I notice you tagged several photos of Japanese sculptures by User talk:Jean-Michel Othoniel as "no permission". It is obvious that the photos are his own work, so that tag should not have been used. In the future, please use COM:DR for FoP cases. King of ♥ 05:02, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Well, OK, King of Hearts, but it wasn't even remotely obvious to me that the photographs (as opposed to the sculptures) were his own work – and of course I can't check now that they've been deleted. I'm sure one of them was marked as copyright Philippe Chancel. I had thought that asking someone to send permission was the best way to deal with lack of permission? Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 10:47, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see now, you're right. I noticed "par Jean-Michel Othoniel" in the file description; it's usually a good sign that it's their own work when there's text to reinforce the claim besides Own, and I assume that meant photography. But in these cases, I think it is still better to open a DR since a "no permission" tag does not allow the tagger to leave a rationale, so the patrolling admin may not easily understand your intent behind the tagging. -- King of ♥ 04:39, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Warning

[edit]

Do not create speedy deletion requests without a valid justification. Thanks, Yann (talk) 18:12, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yann, which speedy deletion request of mine are you talking about? I don't recall making any request without a valid reason, but perhaps my memory is at fault. Your manners are not too good, by the way – you could always try saying "please don't ...", for example. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 19:56, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
[3] and [4] are invalid requests. You should be familiar with Commons policies before creating deletion requests. And this is a warning, which means that you may be blocked if you create such requests again. Thanks, Yann (talk) 21:01, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, your manners have not improved, I see. I apologise for nominating those two files for deletion as copyright violations. Are they eligible for deletion as G10, files created for promotional purposes? Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:34, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
File:Mansarovar Global University, Bhopal Logo.png is in used, so automatically in scope. File:Terna-logo-large-230x85.png is used in a draft. It is in scope if the draft is accepted. Yann (talk) 20:56, 6 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you!

Help

[edit]

Hello, I was looking at user profiles and I see you are well versed and an old fair user. I'm trying to seek help regarding the pictures of youtuber MrBeast. One user is adding a picture again and again which is not freely licensed. I want to know is that a copyvio or what? I requested a delete but then he used an archive link and based the undeletion on that and again put that picture on his page which was replaced by another user, isn't it weird that someone is that much concerned about using that picture which is a screenshot from a video while other high quality pictures are available? Please help if you can, thanks G9mmB (talk) 20:10, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, G9mmB! I'm afraid you seriously overestimate my experience and abilities in this project. I do however know a little about copyright, so I looked at this discussion. It looks to me as if the video (and thus any image from it) was indeed available under a Creative Commons licence in May this year. A CC licence can't be withdrawn, so the image appears to be free to use in perpetuity. Whether it should be used is a separate question, and one that I'm definitely not going to get into. This is just my reading of the situation, please don't take it as any more than that! Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:28, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, this issues was resolved and thanks for your answer G9mmB (talk) 12:35, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
