Gun Goddess ( (じゅう) () (がみ) Jū no Megami?) is the 178th Chapter of the Chainsaw Man manga.

Summary[]

Onlookers in America react in horror as the top half of the Statue of Liberty crumbles away, revealing a devilish creature holding a rifle. Yoru commands the statue weapon to fire; its finger-shaped bullet crossing the world and hitting Pochita directly, who is knocked back through several buildings. Witnessing the destruction that she had wrought, Asa regains control and realizes too late how truly evil Yoru is, while Yoru continues to laugh at the destruction before their eyes. Pochita, shown to have been reduced to a head and torso, is approached by the Aging Devil.

While pouring blood into his mouth, the Aging Devil tells Pochita to eat their entire body from bottom to top, explaining the terms of their contract with the Japanese government. The Aging Devil deems this act to be romantic, asking Pochita if he understands the sentiment. As they tell Pochita to 'eat up', they reflect a mirror depicting several children who are being rounded up by the Japanese government to be executed.

Trivia[]

  • The Statue of Liberty ( (じゆ) () () (がみ) Jiyū no Megami?) is one of the many "Freedom Goddess'" depictions of the Roman goddess Libertas, the goddess of liberty/freedom. "Jiyū" (liberty) and "Jū" (gun) sound similar when pronounced in Japanese, making the chapter's title a play on words.
  • Chainsaw Man being revived by the blood of the Aging Devil parallels how Denji is revived by the mysterious figure in Chapter 126.
  • The U.S. has been the leading nation in gun production over the centuries and the Statue of Liberty serves as one of its most prominent symbols, suggesting that these factors are the primary reasons for the creation of the Gun Goddess model.
  • Assuming that Pochita has a reaction time of 1 millisecond, the finger shot out of the Statue of Liberty's rifle would have had to travel at 39,042,000,000 Kilometers per hour - approximately 39 times faster than the speed of light.
