A Zygarde Cell

A Zygarde Cell (Japanese: ジガルデ・セル Zygarde Cell) is a cell-like component of the Legendary Pokémon Zygarde, making up the majority of its body. On their own, they have no will and little power, but by acting at the direction of a Core, they can assemble Zygarde's different forms.

Biology

Zygarde Cells are small, green cell-like blobs that resemble a planarian and are almost indistinguishable from a Zygarde Core. Their body can be segmented into three sections: a large, round head, an abdomen with a colored hexagon, and a stubby tail. They have two eyes, though one is larger and has a green pupil, and are most commonly seen lying down, though they can stand on their tail. On their abdomen, there is a green hexagon. Their gelatinous body is semi-translucent, with the green hexagon being embedded inside its body, resembling that of a single-celled organism.

These individuals lack any sort of will and cannot use moves, leading to the question on whether or not they could be considered Pokémon. They are controlled by one or more Zygarde Cores, the brains of a Zygarde, who they can combine with to form a Zygarde, acting as Zygarde's body. They can also be used as weapons, such as arrows or waves before being called back into Zygarde's body.

As depicted throughout Pokémon the Series: XY, Zygarde Cells have the ability to turn invisible and fly, though the latter is only seen when assembling Zygarde. Moreover, they can act as the eyes for a Core and, according to Pokémon Horizons: The Series, transmit what they see to anyone Zygarde wishes to. This series also implies Cells can have some degree of will of their own, unlike in the games.

Unlike other forms of media, Pokémon Horizons: The Series also depicts Zygarde Cells having a Shiny coloration, similar to the one of a Shiny Zygarde, with a darker mint-green hue and a more yellow tint to the eyes.

In the core series games

A Zygarde Cell when first found in Pokémon Sun and Moon

Zygarde Cells can be found all around the Alola region in Pokémon Sun and Moon. Upon receiving the Zygarde Cube from Dexio in Heahea City, the player is tasked with collecting all 95 Cells and five Cores spread throughout the region.

In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Zygarde Cells and Zygarde Cores are not directly collectable as they were in Sun and Moon, as the player is given a Zygarde Cube already filled with 40 Cells and a 10% Forme Zygarde from Dexio; the remaining 50% can be obtained by separating other Zygarde from Resolution Cave with the Reassembly Unit. Like in Sun and Moon, a Zygarde can be dissembled to gain more cells, including those Transferred. Zygarde Cells are instead replaced by Totem Stickers.

In Pokémon Sword and Shield, Zygarde Cells are mentioned in the description for the Zygarde Cube. They also briefly appear everytime Zygarde transforms into its Complete Forme and everytime it uses Thousand Arrows and Thousand Waves.

Zygarde Cells reappear in Pokémon Legends: Z-A and appear fully modeled and capable to moving around, not as just items, unlike the previous games.

In Pokémon Sun and Moon, a total of 95 Cells can be collected. Some of the Cells are not visible to the player, such as the ones on Melemele Island until they are given the Zygarde Cube by Dexio. Many of them are also tied to the time of day the game is currently at.

Zygarde Cells first appeared in Mega Evolution Special IV, appearing in Lysandre Labs alongside a Zygarde Core. They have since appeared throughout the XYZ arc, usually assisting the Zygarde Cores: Squishy and Z2 in achieving the three different forms of Zygarde to defend themselves, their friends, and the ecosystem.

Pokémon Horizons: The Series

Shiny Zygarde Cells appeared in a flashback in HZ075, where Gibeon's Zygarde sent out many of its Cells in an attempt to seal a mass of Laquium against its Trainer's orders. The Cells were blown away when the Laquium mass rapidly expanded, leaving their fate unknown. In HZ083, Hamber was shown to be holding onto one that had grown attached to him. In the same episode, it's revealed that the other Zygarde Cells survived and are currently trapped within the Laquium.
