Are you new to the Fandom and need help figuring out how to edit? Well, you have come to the right place! Here's a guide with everything you will need to know about editing and creating pages. This guide also includes details on how to combat vandalization and restore back to the previous page. However, this guide is not complete, and some functions will be left out if they are rarely used.
How to edit a page
If you want to edit look at the top of the page you want to edit. Click the button with the yellow bolded words, "Edit this Page". This should load the page into a wider variant, giving you the ability to edit the page.
If you are new to the wiki, the edit button is replaced with a "View Source" button. This is to protect the wiki from spam editors or to prevent people who don't know what a page is from damaging it. Every page is protected so that only accounts 4 days old can edit and comment on a page. You also have to confirm your email before you can make any edits.
Aside from normal edit, there's also a type called Source Edit, which can be accessed by pressing the 3 dots (or an arrow) next to the Edit button and choosing source edit. Source editing is more complicated and is recommended to users who know a bit more on editing, but it also provides a lot more useful functions like adding a background, pop up messages, adding colors, etc. It's recommended to use Visual Edit before trying out Source Editing. Source Edit is usually the most frequently used type of editing for an experience editor, with the reason behind it being: makes the page more interesting and informative to the reader/viewer when used correctly.
Note: If you are creating a new page from scratch, it will force you to use source edit, but if you prefer visual edit, simply press the yellow button on the top right of your screen which should be saying "Source Editor". This will allow you to switch between the two kind of edit.
The Manual of Style is a general rules page for editing on this wiki. Be sure to follow it if you aren't really sure about what you should be doing.
Formatting text
At the top of your screen is an editing bar, it contains most of the tools you would need for simply adding information and removing said information.
Command | Visual Editor | Source Editor |
---|---|---|
Bolding | To the left of the editing bar, after the "Paragraph" labeled button, there will be a letter B symbol. When clicking on it, everything you type will be bold. This is an example. If you are on PC/Laptop, you can also use Ctrl + B as a shortcut. When you're finished writing in bold, click on the B symbol or use Ctrl + B again. Bolding sentences, phrases, or words helps to emphasize important details about the page or paragraph. | You could do the same thing, or you can do type this character ' 3 times (found at the right side of the enter button on PC/Laptop). Clicking it once more ends the bolding.
|
Italic | Next to the B symbol, there should be another symbol at its right side which looks like an "I". When you click on it, everything you type right after will be in an italic style. This is an example. If you are on PC/Laptop, you can also use Ctrl + I as a shortcut. If you are done writing in italic, click on the symbol or use Ctrl + I again. Italics is used to create a stylish impression or another way to emphasize a part of the page. | You can do the same thing. or you can type this ' 2 times. Clicking it once more ends the italicizing.
|
Underline | Next to the I symbol, there should be another symbol, labeled as "U" with an underline. When clicked, everything you type will be underline. This is an example. If you are on PC/Laptop, you can use Ctrl + U as a shortcut. When you are done underlining, click on the U symbol or use Ctrl + U again. Underlining things is to highlight some parts of a page (Emphasizing a different part when the bold and italic styles are for other ones). | You could do the same thing, or you can type <u> , and then end it with </u> .
|
Note: You can use bold, italic and underline at the same time. Or use a combination from 2 of them to make a page more interesting.
Types of lists
Bullet Lists
A Bullet List is a relatively simple command. It's mostly used to make a list more presentable and easier to read for the readers.
- This is how it looks.
- See the white dots on the side?
- A list will look better when using this.
To use it, it's quite simple.
- For Visual Editing: You can press the 3 dots with 3 lines symbol after the fonts and text styles list on the tool tab. You can type the content in. If you want to make more lines, simply press enter which will create more lines. Once you're done with the list, press the symbol again.
- For Source Editing: Simply put an asterisk at the start of a sentence to create a bullet list.
* Like this
, but make sure you are in Source Edit.
Numbered Lists
Similar to Bullet List, this is also pretty simple command and is used to make list look easier to read, similar to a bullet list.
- This is an example list.
- See the numbers?
To use it, you could:
- For Visual Editing: Press on the symbol beside the bullet list symbol. The icon looks similar to a bullet list icon but with 1 and 2 replacing the latter. To create more lines, press enter.
- For Source Editing: Put
#
(a number symbol) at the start of a sentence you want to be in a list. Note that pressing enter 2 times makes a new list instead of continuing from the last number:
Preview
At the left of "Cancel" button you will see "Preview" button, this button only appears when you are source editing. This is because you need to see if there’s any flaw in your code before saving the changes.
Changing writing style
To the left of the bold, italic and underline icons there is a button that you can click on. It should show you a list of writing styles. It mostly changes the size of your words and bold it. Here's a few examples:
Paragraph
Heading
Sub-Heading 1
Sub-Heading 2
Sub-Heading 3
Sub-Heading 4
Preformatted
Block quote
When you are done with editing, press the blue save button to save your changes to a page. The "Describe what you changed" part is optional. If you don't want to save your changes. or you pressed it by accident, simply press cancel.
Knowing these commands and knowing how to press save change is enough for you to make simple changes to a page. Below are commands that'll be used if you want to create a complex page.
Advanced commands:
Pictures
At the left of chain symbol or Mass upload symbol if you are in source edit, you will see "Media" icon which looks like a picture of a mountain, click on it and you will see all pictures related to the page you are editing, you can change the search to search another pictures. For example, you are editing the Elemental page, you want to add a Dough picture, go to media, search Dough. There will appear many images of Dough, choose the one you want to use and use it. You don't like where you place it? then select the link of the image and cut it (Ctrl + X), then place it wherever you want.
Links
To the right of the book symbol or to the left of the mountain symbol if you are in source edit, you will see link Symbol which resemble a chain, touch it to add a link. It is much easier to link in the source edit, as you can just do [[This]] and in the middle put the link you want to add. For example, want to add the Dark Step Teacher link? Do [[Dark Step Teacher]], normally when you are starting to write the link, will appear suggestions of what link of page you want to add. Short cut for link is Ctrl + K.
Tables
For Visual Editing: Press the insert button next to the 2 arrows, and it will show you a list of tools. Select table and a table 4x4 will appear. Press individual cell to edit each cell, but this will replace every content in the cell if there is something in there. If this is not what you wish, double click on the cell, and you can edit it without replacing the content. You can also merge the cells together, by marking the cells you want to merge together, and selecting the merge cell option that will appear when you do so.
For Source Editing: Next to special character symbol you will see "T ADVANCED", when you click it will appear many options. To find the table icon go to the right-most side. When you click it a series of code will appear: {| class="article-table"
You can type normally between the codes by adding |
if you want a content cell and !
if you want a header cell at the beginning of a cell. Then adding a |-
everytime you want to end that row of table and create a new one. Once you are done, add a |}
at the end to complete the table.
How do you deal with vandalizers?
Vandalizers are users that edit for the sole purpose of ruining or vandalising the page for their own enjoyment. But sometimes, it could also just be a simple mistake. Vandalizations range from deleting parts of a page, or even the whole page; adding things irrelevant to the page to adding false information; and in some cases, even adding NSFW images to a page. The items stated above all count as vandalism.
If you see any vandals, follow the guide below to fix the page, and make sure to report the vandalizer to one of the admins. You can find these at the Wiki Staff Page.
How do you fix a vandalized page?
If the edit is something small, like adding unnecessary phrases on a page, you could remove said phrase easily through editing.
Undo
If it's something big, like a portion of a page or the entire page got deleted. Next to the edit button, there is 3 blue dots (or an arrow) Click on it and click history. You'll be brought to the history of page. It will automatically record every single edit done to the page. Undoing is very simple and fast to do.
An edit that caused the vandalism is normally easy to identify by looking at the green/red number. It tell you how much words was added or removed from a page. Normal edits usually remove or add 50 words and above. If the number is around a thousand, it is usually vandalism.
If the vandalism is recent, and nobody have edited after the vandalism, then you can click on the undo yellow button. It will now show you what will happen if you proceed with the undoing. To the left is the current state of the page and to the right is what will happen if you continue with the undoing. After you have confirm it is indeed a harmful edit, you could scroll down and press save changes. The page should be fixed. All of this takes 4 clicks in total, and should take less than 10 seconds if your connection is fast.
Revert
This is Undo but on a larger scale. It's used when there have been multiple edits was made after the vandalism, because you cannot undo an old edit. It is also quite simple to revert edits.
First, go to history as stated above. This time, instead of pressing undo, you press the time, date, month of the edit. It will show you how the revision of how that page look after that specific edit. Simply choose a revision before the vandalism, remember to check if it was already vandalized , and then press the edit button while you are inside that version of the page, ignore the warning and press save change. This will overwrite every edits made after that version of the page, so be careful.
