"Green Greens" is the 8th episode of Season 3 and the 124th episode overall of Big City Greens.
Synopsis
Tilly and Bill set off on an epic journey to recycle a fluorescent lightbulb at an e-waste center. Meanwhile, Cricket and Gramma learn about recycling.
Plot
Bill goes into the backyard to check on his kale, only to find them all dried up. He discovers that the culprit is a large dump of trash that has been buried underneath the soil, which Cricket dubs his "trash hole". Chastising him for being careless, he demands that he remove the trash and get rid of it immediately. However, Gloria stops them after noticing that they are about to toss a fluorescent bulb. She points out that they need to be discarded at a proper eco-friendly facility as it contains harmful chemicals. To prove a point, Bill, Tilly and Gloria decide to take the bulb to the facility while Cricket and Gramma Alice are reluctantly tasked with getting rid of all the trash in the backyard.
After hitting a traffic jam, Gloria admits that she thought that the trip would be quick. That combined with the facility's narrow hours (it's only open once a month on a Saturday, except in months with 30 days, from 1:00-3:00 PM), causes her to suggest that Bill and Tilly simply walk there, much to their annoyance. They arrive at the train station to look for the chartreuse lane and get help from a eco-census taker who enigmatically takes them there; revealing that the path to the eco-center will be dangerous. Meanwhile, Cricket and Alice ineptly try to get rid of the trash. When their trash can cannot take it, they try to toss it into the building next door's dumpster and run into Brett who tells them about the recycling bin; inspiring them to try and recycle their garbage too.
Bill and Tilly arrive at an abandoned bridge and after a daring race across it, they discover, to their horror, that they are on the wrong side of the facility. After a brief encounter with hoodlums, they decide to charge through the dump and manage to make it to the facility and drop the bulb before the facility closes. The two of them return home tired and defeated; admitting to Cricket that the trip was difficult. However, Cricket reveals that not only had he and Alice gotten rid of the trash, but they also learned about recycling; their actions having restored the kale. Bill pulls the family in for a hug, only for Gloria to suddenly come in it as well; claiming that she technically helped. She did help though, because she informed them about the dangers of the lightbulb.
