— FreeSmart, Get in the Van
|
FreeSmart, temporarily named Less-Restrained, Less-Dumb (stylized and abbreviated as LRLD) and currently named Team Book, is one of the thirteen teams in Battle for Dream Island Again. It was created in "Get in the Van" as a response to Golf Ball demanding everyone to stay with Team No-Name and not switch off to W.O.A.H. Bunch. The original members, all from Pencil's Alliance (including alternates), refused and opted to secede from Team No-Name and create a team on their own. However, in "Taste the Sweetness", the team was transformed to The Beautiful Face Devotion Institute, and returned in "Lots of Mud" as Less-Restrained, Less-Dumb. In "Insectophobe's Nightmare 4", the team was re-named back to FreeSmart.
After Ice Cube suggested they should be called "Revenge" and Ruby suggested "Poopy Mayonnaise", Book reminded them they formed the team to gain freedom and suggested that as the name of the team. Pencil objected against the "Freedom" name, saying that it sounded like "Freedumb". She suggested "FreeSmart" instead. This all-girl team currently features the fewest number of official members at four. This changed once non-alliance members Firey and Gelatin switched temporarily thanks to Tennis Ball in "Intruder Alert", in order to take Ruby's Yoyleite.
Match was "eliminated" prior to the team's formation in BFDIA 5a's Cake at Stake. However, she escaped being launched to the TLC by using an elimination escaping device (a rope tied by Pencil) and using Gelatin to disguise herself as a "tree" when Firey Speaker Box got suspicious. She assisted the team throughout the various parts of Episode 5. However, following the team's victory in BFDIA 5e, the Firey Speaker Box discovered that she was not sent to the TLC after elimination, and she was promptly launched there via a Sender Scoop Thrower.
Bubble is not an official contestant in BFDIA, due to not being present during selection. Despite this, Bubble is often spotted assisting her alliance-mates in challenges, with the Speaker Boxes attempting to halt her efforts whenever they can, due to her non-contestant status. At the end of Episode 5e, she was thrown somewhere by a Sender Scoop Thrower (Presumably the TLC). It is not known where she landed. However, it can be inferred that she died afterwards, as in "Catch These Hands" Bubble is seen to be recovered.
FreeSmart's leadership mirrors the leadership in Pencil's Alliance, with Pencil being the leader and the alternates having less respect. This hierarchy hasn't been questioned or argued against, mainly due to said alternates not having a chance to fight back. Treatment of outsiders is poor as the original members never wanted them to join in the first place.
In "Lots of Mud", the team was reformed and rebranded to "Less-Restrained Less-Dumb" after everybody left The Beautiful Face Devotion Institute because of Ice Cube's "ugly face". The former FreeSmart members sympathized with Ice Cube and returned to her team, rebranding it as they felt keeping the old name wouldn't display an "upgrade".
In "Insectophobe's Nightmare 4", Book renames themselves back to FreeSmart as she thought LRLD was silly, Flower allows this. Needle later joins this team as an unofficial member and was later unofficially pronounced "member" by Ruby's sisters. However, in "Well, Look Who It Is!", Pencil denounces Needle's membership status, not recalling an "act of sacrifice" required to become one. Then, in Spore Day, Needle asks Pencil if she is a member again and Pencil says she doesn't remember it. Needle remarks she was poisoned when it happened. Which is true because in PointyPointyPointy ♫ Needle sacrifices her jetpack for Ruby and Book whilst Pencil was poisoned. Needle says "Book and Ruby saw it, Book didn't I-" before realized Book got yanked back to her team.
As of "Start the Shift", Book is the only remaining member of the team.
Unlike the other teams in BFDIA, the team (still titled FreeSmart) was carried over to IDFB, with Bubble officially joining after she was disqualified from BFDIA and therefore avoiding the TLC. In "Welcome Back", the team (who is on the top of Yoyle Needy), realizes, while recording the 1127th day of recording their video diary, they haven't recorded any of their video diaries properly, because Ruby forgot to remove the lens cap.

Official FreeSmart members who were there when the team was formed.
Unofficial members[]
Members that weren't supposed to be in the game, but were still competing on the team anyways.
Notes[]
- Bubble is not an official BFDIA contestant, but was accepted as a FreeSmart member in "Get in the Van." In "The Long-lost Yoyle City," she was flung away, therefore not welcomed in the game.
- Match, while an official BFDIA contestant, was not considered officially competing due to her elimination in "Get in the Van." She avoided being flung to the Locker of Losers in the same episode and was accepted as another FreeSmart member. In "The Long-lost Yoyle City," caught competing while eliminated, she was flung to the Locker of Losers.
- Ruby's sisters impersonated Ruby in "Insectophobe's Nightmare 4" and they continued to do so until Ruby's elimination in "Spore Day".
Non-member representatives[]
Members that aren't considered FreeSmart members, but still officially represent FreeSmart in the game.
Notes[]
- Firey, along with Gelatin, switched to FreeSmart in efforts to obtain the Yoylite in "Intruder Alert," as per Tennis Ball's request.
- Firey intended to switch back to Team No-Name, but was eliminated one episode later in "Meaty."
- Gelatin switched back to Team No-Name in "Catch These Hands."
- Needle was forcibly swapped to FreeSmart via a swap token activated by Ruby in "Insectophobe's Nightmare 4." She has aspirations to become an official FreeSmart member and was unofficially declared so by Ruby's sisters. However, in "Well, Look Who It Is!," Pencil denounced her membership status and is still considered a representative.
Switch history[]
- Firey and Gelatin (from Team No-Name in BFDIA 7)
- Gelatin (to Team No-Name in BFDIA 9)
- Needle (from W.O.A.H. Bunch in BFDIA 12, forced by a Swap Token)
- Needle (Competed on both FreeSmart and W.O.A.H. Bunch at the same time in BFDIA 16)

Strategy[]
FreeSmart uses the vehicles they have at their disposal or repurpose objects to have transportation like features to help win challenges. They also tend to use trial and error to win their challenges. Their strategy has had them win 67% of the time.
Coverage[]
In BFDIA[]
In "Get in the Van", Pencil refuses to promise that she'll stay on Golf Ball's team. Ruby, Book, and Ice Cube all refuse to promise as well and the four break off from Team-No Name to form their own team with Match and Bubble. Firey Speaker Box almost catches Match and Bubble but they pretend to be trees, avoiding any suspicion. For the challenge, they use the FreeSmart Van to drive to Yoyleland, and take the HPRC with them. As they drive up to the Evil Canyon, everyone jumps so the van will jump across it. They manage to reach the other side successfully, but then immediately get eaten by Evil Leafy.
In "BFDIA 5b", the FreeSmarters work together to escape Evil Leafy, although only Match, Book and Ice Cube are currently playable in the game.
In "No More Snow!", as the team is just about to escape Evil Leafy, Ruby volunteers to push the button that will free them. Ruby presses the wrong button however, popping Bubble in the process. Pencil repeatedly tells Ruby to press the red button, but she keeps pressing the other buttons that appear around it, which blow up Match and Ice Cube and trap the others. However, hitting the red button only causes a laser to vaporize Pencil to death. Book tells Ruby to hit the purple button and the two are finally freed from Evil Leafy, but then Evil Leafy immediately starts chasing them. They climb a tree to get away and Book cuts a rope connected to a weight that kills Evil Leafy (along with Fries and Puffball). Later, the W.O.A.H. Bunch team meets up with Book and Ruby, and the Firey Speaker Box tasks all of them to crank an HPHPRCC to create a new HPRC. Match and Ice Cube are also revealed to be okay in the scene after the credits, though Match ends up killing Ice Cube in order to put out the fire on her head.
In "It's a Monster", everyone except Match spends the next 77 days cranking the HPHPRCC. Afterwards, they recover their dead teammates and continue their journey to Yoyleland in the new and improved FreeSmart SuperVan. Along the way, Pencil drives the van into the Goiky Canal, forcing everyone to hold their breath until they die, while the still living members recover them.
In "The Long-lost Yoyle City", they drive out of the Goiky Canal and finally arrive in Yoyleland. After driving through Yoyle City, everyone gets out to continue on foot. Ruby suggests bringing the HPRC, but accidentally sets it down in glue that came from the snow from the snowball fight mixing with the gasoline. Pencil then gets caught in a Fish Monster's tongue, so everyone helps to saws her in half so they can recover her. Team No-Name starts to catch up, but Pencil freezes them all. They then climb the mountain for several days and reach what they believe to be the summit of Yoyle Mountain, which Firey Speaker Box reveals to be actually way higher up. To slow Team No-Name down, Pencil kills Rocky by kicking him into the Fish Monster's mouth, delaying their team. FreeSmart then climbs to the top and places first. Firey Speaker Box is there to meet them and realizes that Match has been outside of the TLC for some time and immediately takes care of that. He also flings Bubble elsewhere since she is not an official contestant.
In "Well Rested", FreeSmart enters the FreeSmart SuperVan to search for the Pillow Marketplace to sleep in for the challenge. Before they head off, Pencil places Ice Cube in the trunk because the noises from her headphones were too annoying. After driving around Yoyle City for a while, Pencil doesn't seem to know where it is, so Book says that since she's a Yoyle City Atlas, they can look up where the building is in her. Ruby opens Book up and finds that the Pillow Marketplace is at the Yoyle Mall, which is on one of the higher floors of the Yoyle Needy. The team decides to grab some balloons so that they can float the van to the top floor of the Yoyle Needy. Suddenly, a dehumidifier pipe appears in the sky and the van crashes into it. The water getting pulled in from the pipe starts to flood the inside of the van, so everyone had to hold their breaths.
Once the sun sets, the team is completely submerged underwater. They pull out some snorkels and jam them through the roof of the van, allowing them to breathe. Suddenly, the van's weight causes the pipe they're stuck to to tilt. The pipe rotates several times, allowing the team to steal W.O.A.H. Bunches pillows and blankets. The pipe then balances itself out, and FreeSmart faces off against W.O.A.H Bunch on the pipe. They start to lose balance when Spongy runs on the opposite end of the pipe, causing the pipe to rotate again. The end of the pipe with the FreeSmart SuperVan hits Pin's point, causing the water from inside the van to burst out and flood the aerospace building. Amidst the chaos, Book eventually realizes that they should be sleeping, not fighting. So FreeSmart tries to go to sleep quickly. W.O.A.H. Bunch continues to try and sabotage them, now by telling scary stories. Coiny starts repeating Evil Leafy, which makes the FreeSmart members wince in their sleep. Eventually, Evil Leafy appears and attempts to attack either W.O.A.H. Bunch or FreeSmart, but she keeps switching away from the team that's underwater. Ice Cube eventually pulls out the balloons from the van and has everyone tie one around themselves in order to escape the predicament below. Once everyone is in the sky, Ice Cube plays relaxing music that puts the team to sleep, so FreeSmart wins the challenge, coming in second. In the stinger, the team decides to start recording video diaries together.
In "Intruder Alert", Tennis Ball tells Firey to switch from Team No-Name to FreeSmart so that they can obtain Ruby's Yoylelite, but promise that they will switch back to Team No-Name on the next episode. Since Firey wanted to bring Gelatin, Firey and Gelatin join FreeSmart temporarily. The FreeSmart members except for Firey and Gelatin did not learn what the challenge was, and only Firey and Gelatin knew. Firey and Gelatin then decide to mess with FreeSmart by telling them the wrong challenges. It started with telling FreeSmart to do 60 jumping jacks, then they told them to eat 700 Yoyle bush leaves, shatter 2,000 windows, step on 3 different planets, then Firey told FreeSmart to kill all of their teammates, causing Ruby to kill Ice Cube, Book, and Pencil. After Ruby recovers her dead teammates, Firey told them that the contest was to burn down Yoyle City. All this messing around caused FreeSmart to lose the challenge, and since Firey and Gelatin were a part of FreeSmart for this episode, they are up for elimination along with them.
In "Meaty", FreeSmart explores the wreckage of the Aerospace Manufacturing Plant that was blown up. Firey Speaker Box then approaches them to do Cake at Stake. They decide to walk all the way to the Clubhouse of Awesomeness for Cake at Stake, with Firey and Gelatin joining in since they are still members of the team. Ruby wins the prize and gets to go 10 seconds back in time to be reassembled. Firey is eliminated and is given a yoyleberry so that he doesn't burn down the WTF before he's flung away. Distraught at his creator being eliminated, Firey Speaker Box becomes a sobbing mess who can no longer host. Pencil uses a magnet to pull out the knife that incapacitated the Puffball Speaker Box, allowing her to return as the host for the season. For the challenge, FreeSmart must paint the Eiffel Tower pink. Gelatin intends on remaining on the team for now, as he still wants to get the Yoylite for Tennis Ball. Pencil tries to stop Team No-Name, as they're too far ahead, and she fires a laser shooter at them. One of the lasers gets deflected, and causes the team to lose their bucket of paint, which spills into a satellite dish that Tennis Ball built. The team is still in luck, as Pencil had some paint in a syringe. She jams the syringe into the laser shooter, allowing them to shoot splashes of paint everywhere. Pencil and Ruby are both taken out by Fries and Tennis Ball's car, along with the laser shooter. Book and Ice Cube are left on the tower, with Book wondering what they're supposed to do with no paint. Ice Cube comes up with an idea, in which she and Book pull and push on the tip of the Eiffel Tower to cause enough momentum for the tower to swing further and further, side to side, until it dips into the satellite dish from earlier that is filled with pink paint. After a while of this, the vast majority of the Eiffel Tower is painted pink, putting FreeSmart in first place.
In "Taste the Sweetness", the team was transformed into The Beautiful Face Devotion Institute.
In "Lots of Mud", the team was reformed and was renamed to Less Restrained, Less Dumb. They iniatially only tried to rip Flower's petals by force despite it being impossible, but changed their strategy to make Flower try new outfits to satisfy her, Ice Cube deemed all the outfits ugly until she was kicked out by Flower, Ruby takes Jack's hair from her stomach and gives it to Flower which gets her positive reviews from them, Flower gives them a petal and they go back to ripping her petals forcefully. When Coiny is about to get the last petal, the team fights him which end in Ruby dying, Pencil getting dulled and Book stealing Coiny's key, Book uses the last key but Coiny kicks her out of the way and makes them lose.
In "Insectophobe's Nightmare 4", the team is up for elimination. Ruby wins the prize, which is downsizing a contestant of her choice, and Ice Cube is eliminated. Ruby asks her "Fairy god-mother" to reactivate Tennis Ball's Swap Token, which Pencil uses to force Needle to switch to their team. Book dies first out of all of the contestants, the remaining FreeSmarters follow Team No-Name to the Bug Hive where they try to find the queen bug, meanwhile Ruby goes to visit her sisters in a cave, they explain that after Ruby was cast in BFDI, they got jealous and outcast Ruby and lied to her about Gem School, they also explained that they lived in a cave to sway away the camera men, to which Ruby replies that there aren't any camera men so the sisters decide to replace her. Pencil notices it and asks Needle if she does too, but awakens the bugs at the hive and dies in the process, Needle and Ruby go to the theater and Needle uses heat to make Team No-Name's Anti-Poison useless and fight Team No-Name until Golf Ball and Tennis Ball are killed. Coiny then appears and is attacked by one of Ruby's sisters but fails, so she starts crying to the audience's dismay, so they silence and restrain her. Needle is asked by Coiny to kill Ruby to help her old team W.O.A.H. Bunch, but Needle refuses his offer due to the possibility of being promoted to member if she does an act of sacrifice. Needle kills Coiny and wins for FreeSmart, them being the only team not up for elimination.
In "Well, Look Who It Is!," Needle asks Pencil regarding the perks of being a FreeSmart member. Pencil is caught off guard by Needle's sudden declaration of becoming a member, telling her to recall the moment of becoming one. While Needle recalls the "act of sacrifice" the previous episode, Pencil doesn't remember Needle doing such an act, prompting her to ask Book if she remembers. Given Book's response to her death previously in the entire episode, Pencil requests Needle to "actually" make the sacrifice.
In "PointyPointyPointy ♫", the team is disbanded and reformed into the temporary teams of Book and Ruby and Needle and Pencil.
Episode | Win/Lose | Strategy |
---|---|---|
BFDIA 5 | Win (1st) | FreeSmart appears to have access to lots of cutting-edge equipment that gives the members a relatively easy time, namely the FreeSmart Van and SuperVan. They also seem to abuse the mechanics of the Recovery Centers. |
"Well Rested" | Win (2nd) | Ice Cube rewired the Revolutionary Headphones that Needle gave her into playing soothing music. The entire team then floated into the sky with balloons tied to their bodies and fell asleep. |
"Intruder Alert" | Lose (3rd) | Trying to do every challenge on the wheel, only for them to not do the challenge. They did not build a prison to hold the eliminated contestants. |
"Meaty" | Win (1st) | Originally shooting the Eiffel Tower with their assigned pink paint out of a small paint gun, Book and Ice Cube later figure out they can sway the tower back and forth, causing it to dip more and more into the pink paint that is in a satellite dish resting on the ground. Their efforts cause FreeSmart to win the contest by a landslide, with 70% of the Eiffel Tower covered in their team's paint. |
"Catch These Hands" | Win (1st) | Ruby sent the death chamber rolling down a hill while imitating being high on sugar. After plenty of guesses, Book, who was blindfolded, ended up inside the chamber, which crashed onto a tree while Book was taking her blindfold off. After Book did so, however, she read the word "lips" from the chamber's digital sign and got mangled by Puffball Speaker Box as punishment. Since Puffball Speaker Box forgot to give them a new soundproof trash compactor, she let Ice Cube and Ruby walk around scot-free. |
"Lots of Mud" | Lose (3rd) | After winning an intense fight between the team and Coiny, they lost the challenge as Coiny took Flower's final petal at the last second due to Book forgetting to retrieve it. |
"Insectophobe's Nightmare 4" | Win (1st) | Coiny tries to get Needle to switch back to align with W.O.A.H. Bunch as she's been on that team for 9 episodes, but Needle tells Coiny about Pencil saying that in order to not be an alternate's alternate and be a member, she had to sacrifice any last remaining enemy member, so she finally kills off Coiny winning the challenge in the process. |
"Respect to the Wicked" | Lose (5th) | Needle grabbed the FreeSmart SuperVan as it falls while in her Coiny form, causing the team to lose first. |
"Start the Shift" | Lose | Book tries to fix herself after being beaten up by the WTFers, in the end of the episode she manages to get her body fixed but when she scans herself, she realizes that Mirror and Spool inverted her cover's color. |
In IDFB[]
In "Welcome Back", on the top of Yoyle Needy, recording day 1127 of their video diaries, the team announces they'll eat the gumdrop they have collected from their past years. However, Pencil realizes that Ruby forgot to remove the lens cap, and accuses her for not doing that, prompting Ruby to apologize despite not knowing what a lens cap is. Bubble explains what a lens cap is to Ruby. Book, following Pencil's suit, asks Ruby how she still is recording those videos with the lens cap still on. Ruby responds that she doesn't know and that the world is a strange place and anything can happen. Pencil found the reason why no one was watching their diaries all these years, putting herself into a brief mental breakdown. Bubble tells Pencil she doesn't feel bad, only for Pencil to ask why, since 3 years of her work vanished in an instant, where Bubble said she is used to her life vanishing in an instant that it doesn't affect her anymore.
Later, Pencil is worried about her diary followers following the sudden disappearances of the diary. Bubble said it's no big deal. However, Pencil said the followers have no clue who was eliminated in BFDIA 6 (where Ice Cube also asked what happened) until Ruby reveals the details. Later, according to Ruby, revealing it was a secret, Pencil tells Ruby to stop with it being too dangerous, Pencil lands on a cliff. After briefly saying hello to Firey, Pencil continues to rage on Ruby. However, Pencil needs help being pulled up. Bubble attempts to but fails on the ground that she is popped. This results Pencil starting to fall. Book and Ice Cube sprints down, while Ruby falls down, leading to her being shattered. Book and Ice Cube sprint downstairs, and Book then catches Pencil from the air, saving her but also reminding her to not act so rowdy, where Pencil says it's Ruby's fault. Later, Ice Cube says she's got to extinguish the fire from Woody (most likely because Bomby exploded off-screen which is most likely why Woody was on fire), but Book says it's too dangerous, but Ice Cube didn't care and sacrificed herself to save Woody from the fires, resulting Ice Cube being melted. As a result, only Book and Pencil are still alive. Pencil says they need to recover Bubble and Ice Cube, and Book mentions to not forget Ruby. Pencil asks how Ruby die but says "whatever figures."
Later, Book, taking a walk with Pencil, asks her, now that Firey is punished, she asks if they should bring Match back. Pencil unconfidently says maybe, somewhat shocking Book as she thought Pencil would be more eager to see her. Pencil later says that they're doing fine without her and that she is a little to needy, and Book says that she never saw Pencil calling Match needy before. Pencil says that Match was over the top, and that Match would make Book question her before Pencil calls her "needy" again. Later both Book and Pencil recover the dead members Bubble, Ice Cube, and Ruby from the Hand-powered Recovery Center. The team then dances after rescuing and reuniting all the members.

Trivia[]
General[]
- FreeSmart is the 6th team to be created in the BFDI series.
- The original members of this team were the first out of everyone to have had their had their BFB voting icons revealed, as seen in "Getting Teardrop to Talk" when Pencil demotes Bubble.
- FreeSmart is the first team to have the word "Free" in its name, with the second being Free Food.
- Initially, Bubble was the highest ranking member of FreeSmart in BFB, having placed 10th. If non-competitors didn't count, though, then Ruby would've be the highest, placing 13th.
- The original arrangement of FreeSmart from BFDIA 5 is evenly broken up between members who competed in BFB post-split, members who joined TPOT from the very start, and EXITors, at a 2:2:2 ratio, when TPOT started.
- However, as of Out Of The Blue and Category One, this isn't the case, as, in the case of the former, Match and Pencil exited the EXIT, and in the case of the latter, Pencil joined TPOT. If one can split it accurately today, it'll most likely be 2:3:1, broken up between members who competed in BFB post-split, members who are a member of TPOT, and those who did neither.
- Ice Cube is the only armless member of FreeSmart.
BFDIA[]
- This team is the main focus of the game "BFDIA 5b".
- In Cary's reaction to BFDIA 10, he states that "Less-Restrained, Less-Dumb" (LRLD) and FreeSmart are the same team, despite the new (temporary) name change, at around 11:27.
- Because Match got eliminated before the team formed, FreeSmart is the first team that Pencil competes on without her, with the second being The Beautiful Face Devotion Institute (despite it only being temporary) and the third being CloudYAY.
- FreeSmart is the first team to have only females, with the second being
and the third being Tear Drop.
- However, since Firey and Gelatin joined FreeSmart and later Gelatin left,
is the first team to have only females AND have it consistent throughout the entirety of its existence.
- However, Firey and Gelatin joined the team and both ranked higher than Bubble and Ruby in BFB, with Gelatin specifically being the highest ranking FreeSmarter in BFB.
- However, since Firey and Gelatin joined FreeSmart and later Gelatin left,
- Gelatin is the only contestant to switch from FreeSmart. All the others have switched to FreeSmart.
- Firey would've been the other, had he not been eliminated in Meaty.
- FreeSmart, Another Name, Fries, The Beautiful Face Devotion Institute, and Nickel are the only teams in the series with no contestants who were in the TLC in IDFB.
- Firey, Gelatin and Needle are the only members who weren't a part of Pencil's Alliance.
- Additionally, Firey and Gelatin were the only male members of FreeSmart.
- Ice Cube is the only member of Pencil's alliance who was eliminated as an actual member of the team. Match was eliminated as a member of Team No-Name and Ruby was eliminated while the team was temporarily disbanded.
- FreeSmart is the only team in the entire series to have its lowest ranking member be a contestant who wasn't originally on the team.
- If you include Match, Bubble and Ruby's sisters, FreeSmart is the team with the highest number of members, totaling 43.
- Every currently eliminated FreeSmart member ranked exactly two places higher than the member eliminated before them.
- Firey placed 16th, Gelatin placed 14th, Ice Cube placed 12th, Ruby placed 10th and Pencil placed 8th.
- For this trend to continue, Book, the last remaining FreeSmarter, would have to survive BFDIA 18's elimination and get out in BFDIA 19.
- Ruby holds the most dislikes with 32,594 dislikes.
IDFB[]
- FreeSmart is the only team retained in IDFB. The other teams from BFDIA, such as Team No-Name and W.O.A.H. Bunch have dissolved as a team prior to IDFB.
- FreeSmart in IDFB could be considered an alliance rather than a team.
- The term "FreeSmart" was mentioned by Needle when talking to Tennis Ball and Golf Ball when she said it was too dangerous to go to the Science Museum because of a secret related to the team, hinting that the name "FreeSmart" is still a brand name.
