Short Swords are one-handed swords with a short blade which deal piercing damage. They are often used by thieves and assassins, as they are easy to conceal. The base Short Sword deals 1d6 piercing damage with a Speed Factor of 3. In classic Baldur's Gate this weapon falls under the Small Swords proficiency; in all other games, it falls under the Short Sword proficiency. This item appears in Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn and Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition. It can be bought from most weapon stores.
The Short Sword is also used as a standard weapon by kobolds and xvarts.
As Short Swords deal piercing rather than slashing damage, they are the only type of sword that is unable to damage enemies — for example, slimes — that are immune to piercing damage.
