Find Proof of Mae'Var's Treachery is a side quest in Shadows of Amn with the potential to add Edwin Odesseiron as a party companion, and which potentially leads to the Thieves' Guild Stronghold quest, as well.

Acquisition[]

In Chapter 2, go to the Shadow Thief Guildhall located in northwest of the Dock area, speak to Renal Bloodscalp on the second floor, who will ask you to infiltrate Mae'Var's gang of thieves, which is a part of the Shadow Thieves. Renal needs proof that Mae'Var is plotting against him. Do whatever task is required to earn his trust. He will give you a Letter of Transfer.

Registering the quest[]

If Gorion's Ward accepts the task, then the quest is registered in the journal, as follows:

Journal entry: Find proof of Mae'Var's treachery
Renal Bloodscalp, leader of the Shadow Thieves, has hired me to infiltrate the guild house of one of his underlings, a man by the name of Mae'Var. I am to find proof of Mae'Var's treachery while I work under him. Renal has given me papers that will allow me to pass as a member of the Shadow Thieves. I am to report to Gorch in Mae'Var's storefront. Once I have the proof, I am to return to Renal.

First task[]

Down the stairs in southeast part of Dock, enter Mae'Var's Guildhall and show the letter to Gorch behind the counter. He will grant access to the guildhall. Go through the left door and down the stairs to the basement where Mae'Var is found, torturing a thief named Lin. His first assignment is to steal a Unique Item from one of two Temples in the Temple District, depending on your Reputation. In either case, the theft is easier at night. Failure results in hostilities with all temple occupants, so timing and stealth are critical.

Note: Keldorn will temporarily leave the party when Mae'var gives you this task since he doesn't want to steal from the Temple of Lathander. After getting this quest, you may recruit Keldorn again and proceed to steal the statue. Keldorn will not complain.

When the item has been obtained, return to Mae'Var and deliver it. He will tell you to report to Edwin, his second in command.

Second task[]

Get to the third floor of the guildhall and speak to Edwin, a former companion in Baldur's Gate. He will require that you kill a Cowled Wizard named Rayic Gethras for him, who lives in the docks district. Enter Rayic Gethras’s Home to the west and defeat the wizard on the third floor. Return to Edwin to report your success.

Third task[]

Edwin will ask you to retrieve some documents from a merchant named Marcus. Enter the Sea Bounty Tavern just west of the guildhall. You have many ways to deal with Marcus:

  • If the party member that speaks to him has a charisma greater than 10, you can purchase them from him for 250 gold.
    • If the party member's charisma is greater than 15, you can pay 200 gold.
    • If the party member's charisma is greater than 16 and either the member's race is human, elf or half-elf OR the member is female, you can get them for free.
  • If a party member's charisma is greater than 12 and strength is greater than 16, you can threaten him.
  • If a party member's alignment is not good, dexterity is greater than 17, and strength is greater than 14, you can quietly kill him.
  • You can just kill him and take them off his body, but your party will lose reputation points.
  • You can pickpocket the documents from him without even needing to speak to him, though you need a decent pickpocketing score for this.

Potions or spells can be used to temporarily raise attributes before speaking with him.

Give the documents to Edwin and he will tell you to report to Mae'Var for your final assignment.

Fourth task[]

Return to the cellars of Mae'Var's Guildhall and speak with Mae'Var. He will require that you kill a traitor named Embarl. Enter the second floor of the Sea Bounty,

  • If you speak to Embarl he says that he overheard Mae'Var say that he wants to kill Renal Bloodscalp but he has no proof. Ask him to give you his dagger and let him leave. If you return to Mae'Var and choose dialogue option 1, you will earn 28750 experience points. Any other option you select will earn you 18750 experience points.
  • You can also kill Embarl to get the dagger. You do not lose any Reputation points.

Give the dagger to Mae'Var as proof that you killed Embarl.

Providing Evidence[]

Speak to Edwin once more and he will reveal that he knows that you are spying on Mae'Var and wants to join in on the "winning side" of the affair. He offers to give you Mae'Var's Strongbox Key and to join your party to expose the secret partnership with a rival thieves' guild. If you accept the key, with or without his help and companionship, descend to the floor below, and use the key to open the strongbox in the north chamber. If you refuse Edwin, then this questline is now stymied, as the proof of Mae'Var's treachery is locked away and can't be obtained without the key. Perhaps the key can be obtained from Edwin in another manner? Note that Edwin is one of the best mage companions available in the game - if you can tolerate his personality. If not, then keep in the party temporarily, and then decide to release him when his usefulness to the party has passed.

Take the quest item Mae'Var's Letter from the box. The Boots of Stealth ("Worn Whispers") can also be looted from the strongbox. It is recommended to finish any shopping from Gorch at this point, as this will be the last opportunity to do so (except if you don't kill him when he's turned hostile, and charm him in order to access his shop).

Give the letter to Renal Bloodscalp in the Shadow Thief Guildhall. He will thank you for proving Mae'Var's guilt and will ask you to return to Mae'Var and kill him. Return once again to Mae'Var's Guildhall and fight your way through to Mae'Var in the cellar. Once you have killed him, return to Renal Bloodscalp for a handsome reward.

Remember to loot Mae'Var's place clean and not store any important items there before reporting back to Renal if you're going to accept it as your stronghold, for you have no means to return to the original Mae'Var's Guildhall afterwards; Gorch will also be gone if you accept the stronghold.

Final reward[]

If Gorion's Ward is a thief with no other stronghold, Renal Bloodscalp will offer them Mae'Var's former position as head of the thieves' guild. Otherwise, they get The Shadow's Blade. In any case, the party gets 10,500 gp and each member gains 45,500 XP.

Mod Content[]

This section is about unofficial content that is only available via fan-made mods.

Mods:[]

The Rogue Rebalancing mod alters the reward from Renal Bloodscalp if the party has provided proof of Mae'Var's treachery.

The Alternatives mod and the "Temple Thievery" component offers a different way to satisfy Mae'Var's demand that the protagonist steal an artifact from a temple. Please keep in mind that for recruiting Edwin, the PC needs to work for Renal Bloodscalp long enough before accepting one of the alternative offers.
