Appearance and Character
Ronnet is a husky man[3][5] with a long red beard and long red hair.[6]
The Knight of Griffin's Roost wears a red-and-white surcoat adorned with griffins,[5] and his shield is also decorated with a griffin.[3]
Red Ronnet is considered fierce[7] but can be disparaging.[5] The knight enjoys wine.[5]
The exiled Jon Connington is not resentful toward Ronnet or his late father, Ronald Connington.[8]
History
Once lords, House Connington were demoted to landed knights as a result of Robert's Rebellion.[5] Ser Ronald Connington, the Knight of Griffin's Roost, betrothed his eighteen-year-old son Ronnet to Brienne, the daughter of Selwyn Tarth, the Lord of Tarth. Ronnet was opposed, having been told that Brienne was ugly.[5] When they first met at Evenfall Hall, the two had the same height, although Ronnet was six years older. Brienne remembers how Ronnet brought a rose to give to his betrothed. She was not able to look him in the eye or speak the simple words of welcome that she had been taught, however.[9] When Ronnet handed Brienne the rose, he told her that this was all she would ever have from him, as he had no real interest in marrying her.[5]
Recent Events
A Clash of Kings
During the War of the Five Kings, Ronnet, now the Knight of Griffin's Roost,[10] is with King Renly Baratheon's host at Bitterbridge. He participates in a great mêlée in which he is defeated by his once-betrothed, Brienne of Tarth,[3] who enjoys her victory.[11]
Ronnet is among the lords and knights who follow Renly to Storm's End and switch sides to King Stannis Baratheon after Renly's death.[7]
Ronnet survives the Battle of the Blackwater, either being taken captive or turning sides in the midst of the conflict, and he is presented to King Joffrey Baratheon in the throne room to swear his allegiance.[7]
A Storm of Swords
Red Ronnet remains in King's Landing.[12]
A Feast for Crows
When Brienne of Tarth meets Podrick Payne for the first time and he is unable to even pronounce his own name, she is reminded of her own shyness when she met Ronnet when she was twelve.[9]
Ser Jaime Lannister watches knights riding at a quintain in the yard of the Red Keep, with Ser Ronnet breaking his lance clean.[13]
Ronnet accompanies Jaime as his standard bearer when the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard departs King's Landing to resolve the siege of Riverrun, and he joins Jaime and others for supper at Hayford on the first night of their voyage.[5]
At Harrenhal, Jaime comes across Ronnet as he inspects the bear pit; Jaime had rescued Brienne from the pit when she was forced by Vargo Hoat to fight a bear.[14] When Ronnet speaks rudely about Brienne, Jaime strikes his mouth with his golden hand, sending Ronnet tumbling down the steps. Jaime demands that Ronnet speak of Brienne respectfully, so the knight responds by calling her "Brienne the Beauty" and spitting blood at Jaime's feet.[5]
To remove Ronnet from his presence, Jaime charges him with escorting Ser Wylis Manderly to Maidenpool.[15]
A Dance with Dragons
Jaime has some of the Mountain's men join Ronnet as he delivers Wylis to Maidenpool,[6] and the heir of Lord Wyman Manderly then returns to White Harbor.[16] One of the men-at-arms kills a man in Maidenpool and another is accused of rape, so Lord Randyll Tarly hangs the first and gelds the latter.[6]
During the landing of the Golden Company, the exiled Jon Connington leads the taking of Griffin's Roost. He is relieved to learn that Ronnet is away, said to be fighting in the riverlands with Jaime. Jon takes hostage Ronnet's siblings, Raymund and Alynne, as well as his bastard son, Ronald Storm.[8]
Ronnet arrives in King's Landing with twenty men-at-arms, most of them Mountain's men once sworn to Ser Gregor Clegane. Ronnet is brought before Ser Kevan Lannister, Lord Mace Tyrell, Lord Tarly, and the other members of the small council, to determine whether he was involved when the Golden Company attacked the stormlands. Insisting he is loyal to King Tommen I Baratheon, Ronnet declares he will fight his uncle and the supposed Aegon Targaryen. The council decides to put Ronnet under guard in his chambers until they march on Jon and the Golden Company, where he will be given a chance to prove his loyalty. Regarding Ronnet's promise to deliver the heads of Jon and Aegon, Grand Maester Pycelle mentions Jon's failed promise to King Aerys II Targaryen to bring him the head of Robert Baratheon during Robert's Rebellion. Randyll suggests sending Ronnet and all in his company to the Wall.[6]
Quotes by Ronnet
Jaime: How is it that you did not wed?
Ronnet: Why, I went to Tarth and saw her. I had six years on her, yet the wench could look me in the eye. She was a sow in silk, though most sows have bigger teats. When she tried to talk she almost choked on her own tongue. I gave her a rose and told her it was all that she would ever have from me. The bear was less hairy than that freak, I'll—
Ronnet: Brienne. If it please my lord. Brienne the Beauty.[5]
Jaime: You are speaking of a highborn lady, ser. Call her by her name. Call her Brienne.
—Jaime Lannister and Ronnet
Ronnet: I am no traitor. I am King Tommen's man, and yours.
Kevan: So you say, ser. Words are wind.
Ronnet: Send me against my uncle, and I will bring you back his head, and the head of this false dragon too.[6]
—Ronnet and Kevan Lannister
Quotes about Ronnet
A roar went up from the crowd as a helmetless red-bearded man with a griffin on his shield went down before a big knight in blue armor.[3]
—thoughts of Catelyn Stark
She remembered a day at Evenfall, and a young knight with a rose in his hand. He brought the rose to give to me. Or so her septa told her. All she had to do was welcome him to her father's castle. He was eighteen, with long red hair that tumbled to his shoulders. She was twelve, tightly laced into a stiff new gown, its bodice bright with garnets. The two of them were of a height, but she could not look him in the eye, nor say the simple words her septa had taught her. Ser Ronnet. I welcome you to my lord father's hall. It is good to look upon your face at last.[9]
—thoughts of Brienne Tarth
Brienne: One day I'll thank you in a mêlée, ser.
Hyle: The way you thanked Red Ronnet?[17]—Brienne Tarth and Hyle Hunt
In the mêlée at Bitterbridge she had sought out her suitors and battered them one by one, Farrow and Ambrose and Bushy, Mark Mullendore and Raymond Nayland and Will the Stork. She had ridden over Harry Sawyer and broken Robin Potter's helm, giving him a nasty scar. And when the last of them had fallen, the Mother had delivered Connington to her. This time Ser Ronnet held a sword and not a rose. Every blow she dealt him was sweeter than a kiss.[11]
—thoughts of Brienne Tarth
Ser Ronnet was a landed knight, no more. For any such, the Maid of Tarth would have been a sweet plum indeed.[5]
—thoughts of Jaime Lannister
