You might be confused or baited as to why Ive rated this movie so poorly across all spectrums, and might think I just blindly hate Gurren Lagann or something.
In fact, the opposite is true. Gurren Lagann is my favorite anime of all time and a work which I believe pushes the medium forward with its brilliance, which is why the only reason anyone should *ever* watch this movie if they care about the anime, is just to see the weird "what-if" ending of this movie, *after* seeing the show in its entirety, and even then, I wouldn't recommend it because its literally just a much worse version of the show otherwise.
This review should be looked at as a *comparison* to the actual anime, which I consider to be 10's across the board, and I believe that's perfectly justified.
This movie is absolutely horrendous. It ruins scenes that were outstanding in the anime. It abridges content that was already extremely tightly made and turns it to unrecognizable sludge. It tries to stuff 15 episodes worth of true content into 2 hours... and fails miserably. Gurren Lagann was already pretty much perfectly paced as a TV series, it was not meant to be "done" in this way and format.
The second movie is less egregious in this respect because it has less episodes to cover (only 10) and it takes a different approach, so you can see my review on that one there later.
Animation
Most of it is just re-using the show's animation, which is great in that the show had great animation, but pathetic and lazy otherwise. It also literally misses a lot of the great animation from the episodes it skipped a lot over, so... make of that what you will. For a movie you expect better, but I could understand if they had just *not* ruined the scenes and wasted the animation. If you're going to mess things up and change the show for no good reason, at least improve the animation or something.
There's a few scenes were the scene's artwork was mildly improved, but its not worth the harm to the overall beauty of Gurren Lagann to recycle its animation for what feels like a bad cash grab.
They literally change the perfectly-fitted music in the anime for certain scenes for some random tracks and even some very questionable "original" tracks, as if they didn't care what they were making. A lot of scenes with excellent sound effects and tracks were just straight up missing or altered in this show. For turning scenes that were fantastic and iconic into rancid vomit, this gets a total failure of a grade.
Rescripted lines for no reason, also for whatever reason, the music is far quieter in scenes where it should be loud. I don't know what they were thinking, honestly.
Sound effects seemed to be less impactful too, its like they did a "do-over" with the audio and basically just screwed so much of this up, its not even funny.
The re-scripted lines harm the storytelling too, they were delivered with less impact and had less meaning, coolness and overall impressiveness, harming the narrative. For reference, they literally *speed* through the "GATTAI" scene with re-scripted lines... turning it into cringe, Kamina's speech to Thymilph is rushed and feels... whatever, compared to the original.
They literally SKIP over so much story content its not even funny, and MONTAGE the rest. As I mention below, episode 5 is just straight up gone, which is crucial in understanding the chain of authoritarianism and consequentialism of the Anti-Spirals and that type of thinking reflected as a parallel in humans.
The impact, weight, and emotional depth of the story is lost in the imbecilic pace of the movie, which only hurts the narrative immensely.
Actually, y'know what, let's just see how much they removed right now since its been a little while since I watched it:
Half of episode 1 is straight-up gone, they mess up the sequence of events.
They removed most of episode 2, including all of Kamina's development and everything related to his father.
They skipped *ALL* of episode 4, which people might be like "oh, what's the big deal, bad animation lol", but that's the episode where Kittan and his siblings are introduced, and the amazing true combination of Gurren Lagann occurs, with all its glorious animation.
They skipped *ALL* of episode 5, so so much for Rossiu and that whole village.
They skipped *ALL* of episode 6.
Let's put it like this:
They finished episode 8 in the story by the 45 minute mark.
That leaves 1 hour 10 minutes for 7 more episodes worth of content.
They *combine* all of the fights in the second half into one single fight... which, I don't think I need to explain, is a mess for Simon and Nia's development, and is basically a replacement for a bunch of episodes... (RIP Yoko and Nia's development in episodes 9-15 I guess).
They don't even have the Lordgenome fight in it... What? They don't have the assault on Tepperin... it doesn't feel like a journey or a war or an attack on an entrenched king, it feels like a rushed mess.
For greatly harming the narrative of a beautiful work, this gets a failing grade.
I hope you didn't care about Rossiu's backstory and whole context at all, since that got montage'd over lol. Other minor characters largely got shafted too. The major characters had their likability and impact reduced by the bad storytelling of the movie.
This movie *only* goes backwards, not forwards, as you can tell.
See above, you can't just "skip" episodes and expect the characters to be the same.
I was expecting a lot, instead I got a massive, cringy mess where they messed up the emotional impact and awesomeness of the story by cutting out everything that made it awesome, re-doing a bunch of lines to make them worse for no reason, removing and changing a bunch of the amazing music, removing many amazing scenes period, losing depth of the story, and just being an all-around unfun experience... Unless you like montages. This movie is a disgrace to the Gurren legacy, and there's a reason people rated it significantly lower than the anime and even the second movie, if you want to know the reason, here's a comprehensive reason why.
What a miserable movie, you should only watch it "for fun" to see the weird fight they did, and literally *SKIP THE FIRST 3/4 OF THE MOVIE IF YOU'RE GONNA DO THAT*
