A must-see for many reasons.
It was a highly influential movie, and almost a legend in the anime world. Many people, especially artists, talked about their discovery of "Akira". For some time, it acquired an almost mythical status among teenagers of Western Europe.
On a technical side, Akira is handmade 2D-animation at its best. Quality of the lights, faces expressions, camera effects, colors, creativity of scenes, everything is marvelous.
On a story side, the quality is obvious, but it will not suit anyone's taste. Many of the characters have depth and feel real. The story has two parts. It starts with the realistic life of a post-war Tokyo struggling with corruption, revolts, bike gangs, police and army abuses... The second half is more about fights with technology and supernatural powers. I totally enjoyed the first part, but much less the second part, except for the stunning visuals.
