“ | What led us here? You did, you vile blasphemies. Machines... Thinking... Breeding... You were to bear us a new, promised land. But when you arrived at that distant world, you knew that in time, we would bring ruin to it as well, as we had to Earth. And so it was... we came to war. | „ |
~ Ballas describing the cause of the Old War. |
The Sentients are the main antagonists of the MMO third person shooter Warframe.
An ancient biomechanical species created by the Orokin Empire, the Sentients turned against their masters and invaded the Origin System with genocidal intent in what became known as the Old War. Officially believed to have been defeated by the Tenno warriors, the toll of the war and the manipulations of the Sentients ultimately caused the downfall of the Orokin Empire, allowing the Grineer and the Corpus to rise as the dominant forces of the Origin System.
In an attempt to harness their legendary powers, the Grineer unwittingly reawakened the Sentient leader Hunhow and the rest of the dormant Sentients that remained after the end of the war. Despite the Orokin being long gone the Sentients now gather their forces to resume their genocidal campaign, unwilling to leave any remnants of their creators alive.
They are collectively the arch-enemies of the Tenno, the player characters and protectors of the innocent and the last remaining stability in the Origin System.
History[]
Creation[]
In times long past, the grip of the Orokin Empire on all worlds of the Origin System was firm and unchallenged. They reigned in luxury, hedonism and cruel entertainment they carried out on those beneath them and their technological achievements created breathable atmospheres on all moons and planets. But their life of hedonism took its toll on the environment. The empire at risk of failing, the Orokin looked beyond the confines of their solar system for new worlds to colonize, their gaze falling upon the relatively close Tau System.
The Archimedians, the caste of scientists and scholars among the Orokin, hatched many plans to terraform the planets of Tau, but all were either dismissed by the Seven, the judicial body of the empire, or ended in disastrous failure. That is until Archimedian Perintol created a small machine capable of self-replicating and adapting to any harm that came unto it. This would allow the machines to survive the conditions on Tau and fulfill their function to make it habitable, after which they would be stranded as the energies of the Void are poisonous to them, a realm where logic and science cease to apply and that can be used to travel across great distances. The Seven called the machine an abomination for going against the very principles of their society and nearly executed Perintol for creating it, but one of the Seven secretly agreed with the project and manipulated the other six into approving it.
The Old War[]
The plan was put into motion and the machines sent to Tau to have them prepare it into a paradise for Orokin colonization. The machines did indeed fulfill their duty and made the worlds of Tau habitable, but being constantly required to adapt and reproduce to survive the process had an unintended side-effect: Just like the Orokin had feared, the initially simple machines had evolved and gained self-awareness. The Sentients looked upon the beautiful new worlds they had created and realized that if the Orokin were ever to arrive and claim these worlds as theirs, they would eventually destroy them just as they had with their own system. They decided that they could not allow the Orokin to spread more of their cruelty and declared war, sending a massive armada led by Hunhow and his children back to the Origin System.
Unfortunately for them, their weakness was also the only way back. While the journey wasn't enough to kill them, the exposure to Void energy left the Sentients that arrived barren, unable to ever reproduce again. This only fueled their hatred for the Orokin, now intent on wiping them and everything associated with them out.
The war against their creators was vicious and the Sentients held a clear advantage for a majority of the conflict, thanks to their technical superiority and their innate ability to subvert and control machinery, rendering the high-tech defenses of the Orokin nearly worthless. In their desperation the Orokin deployed every strategy they could think of against their genocidal opponents, from using their tank-bred slaves as cannon fodder to unleashing the Technocyte Virus in the hopes that it would overtake the Sentients. Unfortunately for them, nothing helped them turn the tides of war... until they turned to the survivors of the Zariman Ten Zero incident, who had gained powerful new abilities from their exposure to the Void. Even though the Orokin considered these children to be monsters they had few alternatives left, ultimately deciding to use them as their new army with the Warframes as conduits for their powers.
This proved to be a massive success. Since the Void was inherently poisonous to the Sentients, the Void-based abilities of the Tenno gave the Orokin a fighting chance. The war continued for years, until the Sentients realized that their strategy had to change if they are to succeed in their goals. Hunhow hatched a plan to allow the Tenno destroy him, tricking the Orokin into thinking the war is won, while his daughter Natah infiltrated the Orokin to gain the Tenno's trust and collapse the empire from within. Although the Orokin caught and reprogrammed Natah, Hunhow's plan nontheless succeeded and the Tenno turned against their masters during the celebration ceremony.
Reawakening[]
After the end of the Old War, the remaining Sentients went into dormancy within tombs scattered around the Origin System, awaiting the day that Natah would reawaken them.
The New War[]
Fragments[]
Sentients reproduce by a variant of fragmentation, splitting pieces off of their bodies that then grow into new Sentients. While their consciousness reside inside of spherical cores located at the center of their main bodies, their mind stays connected with every single part of their body as long as both the core and the fragments stay intact. The exact process and conditions are unknown, but not all Sentients possess their own individual consciousness and personality. These lesser drones remain under the control of the full-fledged Sentients, functioning as workers and soldiers.
- Smaller Drones
- Vomvalyst: The smallest of Sentients. They switch to an invincible spectral state when sufficiently damaged and can only be killed by Void energies.
- Oculyst: Unarmed Sentients that function primarily as scouts, scanning the environment and calling reinforcements when threatened.
- Brachiolyst: Fragile drones that lack the usual Sentient adaptation ability. They can switch between ranged and melee combat stances.
- Conculyst: Sentients specialized for close-range combat, equipped with two large staff weapons.
- Battalyst: Sentients specialized for ranged combat, firing powerful energy blasts and launching their core into the air to create a barrage of dangerous lasers swerving around them.
- Symbilyst: Sentients carrying a large shield arm to protect other Sentient drones.
- Mimic: Sentients capable of shifting into nearly any shape, mainly inanimate objects, to spy on and ambush unsuspecting targets.
- Ortholyst: Lightweight, skeletal Sentients that anchor themselves into the ground so they can use their massive cannons attached to their backs to provide artillery support.
- Aerolyst: Highly armored drones that can heal nearby Sentients.
- Summulyst: Sentients that switch between a mobile combat form and a stationary gateway with which they can summon reinforcements directly onto the battlefield.
- Cruiser Drones
- Murex: Massive Sentient warships that act as the main fleet of the Sentient forces.
- Condrix: Massive, spearlike dropships launched by Murex onto target locations. Condrix use their six arms to split their chests open, forming a portal through which troops can arrive.
- Orphyx: Smaller variants of the Condrix, the Orphyx emit a pulse field that disables nearby machinery. Thanks to Natah, they have recently learned to disable even Warframes.
- Gyrix: Sentient fighters equipped with missle launchers. They can project three false copies in close proximity to themselves to throw off enemy fire.
- Ionyx: Sentient fighters equipped with plasma weaponry.
- Splintrix: Smaller variants of the Condrix, these Sentients are launched by Murex at manned spacecraft to allow smaller drones to board and destroy ships from within.
