~ The Cuckoo while the Land is being destroyed. |
The Cuckoo is major antagonist in the Sandman comic book series from the DC universe. She is a parasitic dream that wished to escape into the waking world. She eventually latched onto the dream of a girl with an extremely rich imagination named Barbie. In Barbie's dream, she took control and created a constant, magical world called the Land that existed even when Barbie was awake. As she grew more powerful, she began trying to destroy the land by killing Barbie so that she could invade the dreams of others. She was eventually freed from the Land by the Dream King.
Appearance[]
Also in reality, the Cuckoo was nothing but energy, while in the Land, she took the form of a young Barbie. She resembled a little girl with blond hair in pigtails and a pink and orange dress. After leaving the land, she lived up to her namesake and took the form of a bird.
Personality[]
Initially, the Cuckoo seemed fairly innocent and seemed happy to live in the Land and make it a true world. However, as she grew older, her only purpose in life became leaving the land and escaping into the real world. With this in mind, she became almost fully without empathy, being completely self-centered in her pursuit of "growing up", and showing no care towards any of the beings whose deaths she caused or the carnage she spread. However, Morpheus did not consider her evil, as she was fully incapable of acting any other way.
While in the land, the Cuckoo became extremely manipulative, using her innocent form to trick others. She was intelligent and resourceful in her pursuit, although her natural narcissism made her arrogant and somewhat petty.
Biography[]
The Cuckoo was initially just a stray dream, before finding the vivid dreams of a girl named Barbie and beginning to live in them. It turned those dreams into the Land, a real world that existed even when Barbie was awake. However, as she got older, the Cuckoo began to look for way to leave the land, and the only way to do that was to destroy it. She soon found out that the only way she could destroy the Land was to kill Barbie and destroy two artifacts called the Hierogram and Porpentine, which could only be destroyed by Barbie.
As the Cuckoo set out on her quest however, Barbie stopped dreaming, throwing a damper on her plans. With the help of her right-hand Luz and an army she had raised, she took over the Land, terrorizing the inhabitants while looking for ways to destroy the Hierogram and Porpentine herself. This failed, and she ended up sending her servant George into the Waking World to find Barbie and bring her back.
George was successful and Barbie was brought back to the Land, joining a group of companions who were fighting the Cuckoo, including an undercover Luz. With Luz's help, the Cuckoo had all the companions killed and had Barbie brought before her. The Cuckoo then broke Barbie psychologically and convinced her to help her destroy the land. Making Barbie destroy the Hierogram and Porpentine, the Cuckoo began to celebrate her victory against the Land. However, and the Land began to fall, the Dream King himself appeared. Although he ended up destroying the Land, he allowed Barbie to live and decide what punishment the Cuckoo should receive. Barbie decided to let her leave, since she had only acted by her nature. The Cuckoo did so, receiving everything she wanted.
